Generation: 1

  1. 1.  PETTWAY Vira L. was born on 21 Nov 1888 (daughter of PETTWAY James R. and SMITH Mary R.); died on 25 Mar 1964.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Nickname: Vera
    • Name: Bunnie

    Notes:

Hi Gene...I'm going to attach some pictures that may interest you. Let me know if you get these...
    :-) Mary Anne Perdue
(gg granddaughter of James Heborn Temple)

The first two show James H and Vira L. Pettway (I have always wondered what the "L" stands for and can't find anything. I did find that her nickname was "Bunny". Never knew that before!! :-) I met Vira when I was about 3-4 yrs old when my family visited the Temple farm in Disputanta, VA. I remember the fireplace...the fact that my 5 or 6 yr. old older brother found an egg that one of the hens laid and she cooked it for his breakfast...and the old pump organ which my mother played for "Miss Vira and Miss Ada".
In the third picture, which I cropped from a "long" pic, you see what I believe would be the Pettway sisters. I don't know who the first one is...but she could be the oldest one, Ella Jane? Not sure...she died in 1937. I'm not sure when this picture was taken. James H died in 1944, so this is well prior to that date. Second from left is Mary Alice Pettway Beck (married to Henry Leonard Beck), then Vira and James H Temple, and finally Ada Pettway (never married)

Mary Beck was the daughter of Mary Alice and Henry L. Beck. I believe that may be her in the last part of the cropped picture (#4) with her husband Herbert Franklin Bishop. Another family member (Beck) looked at the pictures as we were in touch with genealogy and she "guessed" that he was Herbert Franklin Bishop. Since Mary Beck Bishop didn't die until 1947, that could well be her with him there. (since I know that this had to be well prior to 1944 when James H passed away)

#5 - Ada, Vira, and James Heborn Temple. Notice the faint shadow/silhouette of the mule just behind the "young" James H.
#6 - A younger picture of Vira and James H in front of the old Temple farmhouse.

    #7 - Temple farmhouse
#8 - Temple farmhouse with a later picture of it -- my Daddy is on the left as you look at the picture -- with a friend, Everett Stallings, and his beloved dog, "Flash". Daddy lived on the Temple farm from age 12 - 17 or so...

Hope you enjoy these! If you have any Pettway/Beck family pics, I'd love to see them!!
