Description: Obituary for Edith Goodrich Gwaltney
Edith Goodrich Gwaltney, 90, of Colonial Heights, widow of Orville L. Gwaltney, Sr., passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015. Born in Surry County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin T. and Pearl Westbrook Goodrich. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Goodrich and Norman Goodrich. Mrs. Gwaltney is survived by her children, O. Lee Gwaltney, Jr. of Kalamazoo, MI, Cynthia G. Olgers of Sutherland, Keith T. Gwaltney of Carson, and Tamara L. Longo of Mechanicsville, five grandchildren, three great-grandchild, and a sister, Jean G. Johnson of Waverly. The family would like to thank the at home caregivers, and the staff of Brighter Living and Gentiva Hospice for their care and support during Mrs. Gwaltney's illness. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home 6616 Boydton Plank Road, N. Dinwiddie, VA 23803. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Claremont Cemetery, Claremont, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. He was a coal miner in West Virginia and after retiring from the mines he and my grandmother opened their general store in Tazewell. Grandpa's parents died when he was very young and records regarding their births and deaths have never been found as far as I know.
