this marriage stuff is fascinating. Rev. Milton L. Bishop's wife was the sister of caroline matilda smith who married charles achilles douglass. all were living in campbell co, near lynch sta. and the mount hermon methodist church, where MLB was pastor. i'm guessing that india seymore stayed with her brother milton after her sister married alexander t. clary. mount hermon is only a few miles from where my gggfather samuel davies rice was pastor (diamond hill presbyterian) and john holt rice was living. it is also very close to new london where another john's brother dr. wm r. rice lived. the REALLY interesting part is that india and john named their only son "alonzo" (after john's brother-in-law alonzo cocke-also of campbell co.) "douglass" (nobody knows why) "rice." i think you just found out why!!! the douglass name, spelled that way, was passed down from alonzo to his first son, "percy douglass," and from percy to his oldest son, "douglass." there is another of percy's sons named "alonzo douglas" with only one "s". the family joke is that douglass' having the extra "s" made him an "ass." at least that was uncle lonnie's version of it. in any event, it was clearly important to somebody, and i think it was india.
