GENERAL NOTES: In a book published by the London Record Society 'Bedes Fraternity of St Nicholas' it mentions Thomas Argall joining in London in the year 1520.
Didn't have a long look at the book, but will return to it, but many interesting names mentioned. What was this fraternity about, i suppose it operated just like one of the many Guilds, BUT perhaps on a different level of society.

He was probably born in his parents house on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate at Lambeth in 1500 (In a legal document dated July 1540, Thomas was recorded as forty years old (PRO SP 1/162)).
He began his legal career around 1521 when he entered the services of Archbishop Wareham (Lived 1450 - 1532; Archbishop of Canterbury 1503 to 1532) at Lambeth. He proved many Wills, including that of James Gosnolde of Edwardston Halle, co. Suffolk, dated 29 January 1522. Proved 6 March 1522 [3] by Thomas Argall, proctor for the executors named.

He is first mentioned in Court records on 23 May 1529 in correspondence between the Bishop of Norwich and Cardinal Wolsey. He was later Secretary (Scryvenor/Clerk) to Thomas Cromwell, who in turn was Secretary to Cardinal Wolsey, Chancellor of all England; Thomas Cromwell later succeeded Wolsey as Chancellor.
Thomas Argall played an important part in the legal proceedings surrounding the annulment of the marriages of King Henry VIII. He is recorded as party to the annulment of the marriage to Anne of Cleeves, and to Katherine. He is mentioned in the Court papers starting in June 1533. He was involved in dissolving the chantries under Henry VIII and in levying fines on supporters of Wyatt's rebellion in Queen Mary's reign. He is also discussed in the LETTERS AND PAPERS FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC Vol. XVIII, Part I as purchasing The Rectory of CREWENNE (Crowan), in Cornwall on 29 October 1543, although the purchase was never sealed (Page 555, 38b BOOKS OF THE COURT OF AUGMENTATION).

Thomas received a Royal Pardon (what for?) on 22 January 1549. Thomas, together with his father-in-law, John Tallakarne, had custody of Halden Wood and of land in Rolvynden (Kent?) on 23 May 1554. Thomas was appointed Keeper of the records of the Court of First Fruits and Tenths on 10 March 1542 and was appointed Registrar of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in February 1554. He was instrumental in reestablishing the Guild of Jesus within St Paul's Cathedral during the Marian Counter-reformation.
On 23 February 1560, he licenced various Manors in Sussex and Surrey to Sir Richard Sackvill, who likewise licenced the Manors of TOLLEPYDDELL in Dorset and Wydcombe to Thomas's sons Gabriel and Edmund (Edward), and the Manors of Byrncombe and Woodbourne to his sons John and Rowland.
He was born at Lambeth where his parents held a house and a close on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate. He seemed to have lived in London mainly and is recorded as acquiring much property during his lifetime. He bought the estate at East Sutton in Kent in 1546 from Richard Covert, and was granted (acquired) the Manor of Walthamstow Bedyk (known as Low Hall), Essex, in 1553, and was an officer of the Royal Court in 1559.
ARGALL AVENUE in Walthamstow now commemorates the Argall connection. On 17 August 1547 an Inquisition was taken at The Guildhall (17 Aug ,1 Edward VI) before Henry Hoberthorne, Knight, Mayor and Escheator, after the death of John Potkyn gentleman, by oath..... wh sayeth that: John Potkyn was seised of 1 capital messuage called the Sterre situated in ....Bredestrete (there follows a statement of the property and its income). So seised, the said John Potkyn made his Will 8 April 1843 and thereby bequeathed all the said premises to John Baker, knight, Thomas Smyth, Richard Randall, THOMAS ARGALL, Edmund Jenny, gentlemen.... to hold to them and their heirs for ever........ In 1560, he bought Walthamstow Bedyke from Ralph Sadler.
His own Will reveals other property in Ludgate (London), Essex, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Southants (sic), Bedfordshire and Kent. In the Harlean Record of PCC Wills, he is described of St Michaells in the Querne, St Faythes, St Martins within Ludgate, London. He is believed to be buried in the Church of St Faith in the Virgin, Bermondsey. His burial date is assumed as 2 days after his death. The Appendix to the 9th Report on the Manuscripts of the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's (A Box 9) refers to the demise by St Paul's to Thomas of their great messuage in Ivy Lane, which is where he had house in the shadow of St Paul's, and where he almost certainly died. Thomas was married twice, and Margaret Tallakarne was his second wife. Date of birth taken from article by James Alsop in the Catholic Recusant. Date of death taken from from PRO List of PCC Will information. He was granted the right to use the ARGALL Coat of Arms in about 1554. His son Richard succeeded to the property of East Sutton in 1563.
I have The London Encyclopaedia which gives information on this parish and church. The church was demolished in 1256 when old St Paul's was extended eastwards, which served the people of Paternoster Row and St Paul's Churchyard. The parishioners were then given space for their church in the crypt of St Paul's Cathdral. The location is marked within the present Cathedral. But when the cathedral was rebuilt after the Great Fire, the parish of St Faith's was combined with St Augustine to become St Augustine with St Faith, Watling Street, in a church rebuilt in 1680-83 by Wren. This church was bombed in 1940 and only the tower and spire remained. It is now incorporated into St Paul's choir school.
On a map of the parishes of the City of London, St Faith's under St Paul's is shown just North of St Paul's Cathedral, but south of Newgate Street, continuing on round the East end of St Paul's - but I think all to the West of the present line of New Change.

GENERAL NOTES: There is no proof of the place of his birth; however, there is proof that he owned the property at Treglossick, St Keverne, Cornwall. He was, probably, a Church Lawyer.
Because he was concerned with property in Cornwall, it is likely that he or his father were born there and that he was the eldest son. He later lived in a house on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate at Lambeth. In the visitation of Essex in 1612, he is described as 'a gentleman of London'.
PRO - EARLY CHANCERY PROCEEDINGS - 1485 to 1500, Bundle 125 (page 42) reveals that he was involved in a case, addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1486 to 1493 and 1504 to 1515) against THOMAS CHEMDEN and MAUD his wife, over the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and gardens called DORNE in Cornwall. Bundle 183, addressed to the Cardinal Archbishop of Canterbury (1493 to 1500) (page 30) concerned a case between JOHN ARGALL and JOHN KELWAY of Trespusen, (Tresprison? in Cornwall) relating to the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and land in Treglosek (Treglossik), Cornwall (which is in St Keverne Parish).
[Deeds in Cornwall County Records Office (J 127) concern Treglossak from the 14th Century, but there is no mention of any Argall connection].

GENERAL NOTES: A John Arcall was a Citizen and Tailor of London by 24 January 1441. The Deed links him with Thomas Coupe of 'Southwerk' where they both quitclaim of their right in a tenement of 1 acre in the parish of Batrichsey, Co. Surrey, adjoining the Thames, and half an acre in the parish of Wandesworth, in a place callec Temsefurlong, which they had obtained as a gift from John Prentys and Joan his wife. 17>17 ... to master Thomas Westrow, the rector, and churchwardens of the church of All Hallows at the Hay in the Ropery, I leave a parcel of land within the parish, for the augmentation and enlargement of the said church. Dated 27 July 1452, and registered 23 October 1452.
Assumed to be that father of John Argall, but this not is proven.
