  1. 1.  SPRINKLE Peter (Christian (?)) was born on 3 Jun 1778 in York County, PA (son of SPRINKLE William and SPRINKLE Catherine --LNU--); died on 12 Sep 1859 in Shenandoah Valley, Rockingham County, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Land: 28 Jul 1830, Shenandoah Valley, Rockingham County, Virginia
    • Will: 10 Dec 1852, Shenandoah Valley, Rockingham County, Virginia

    Notes:

I am reluctant to assume that Peter and Christian are the same person. I will keep looking for documentation to support the theory. Also, I have never seen anything in writing (besides the book, Related Families of Botetourt County, that states that John Morgan's name was Redford. Although the book is a great source of information, I believe it may contain some errors so I keep looking for other sources to corroborate what's contained in the book. Sure wish the census records listed his full name somewhere! The civil war records and tombstone don't list his full name either. Maybe we'll run across something...

Please let me know if you find anything else! ... Dee

Thanks, for the info. I have seen the book and used it as a source for some of my other ancestors, also. I am confused, though, as to why page 172 indicates that Col. J.M.R. Sprinkle was the son of Christian Sprinkle. This does not match the information I have recorded. I have J.M.R. Sprinkle's father as Peter Sprinkle, married to Nancy Redfern, and then after Nancy's death to Catherine Hulvey. Perhaps Christian was a relative who took Peter in after Nancy's death?? (although I don't have a Christian Sprinkle in my index)

I have several notes about Peter, including:

A tragic time in the life of Peter's family came when Nancy died in about 1819. Peter was alone with at least six children. Peter married his second wife, Catherine Hulvey, on 3 Dec 1921. In a few years, Peter Sprinkle migrated from Rockingham County down river to Shenandoah County, leaving his children in Rockingham. Peter's son, Samuel R., likely cared for his brothers and sisters. The 1830 census places most of the family near each other and Samuel apparently has his youngest brother and sister living with him. Peter remained in Shenandoah County with his second wife and three unmarried daughters. This was his final home. As reported to the census taker, Peter Sprinkel's age and birthplace match the birth records of York County, providing a vital link of evidence in a complicated migration chain. Peter had very few land dealings in Rockingham County and none in Shenandoah despite his 35 years there. Peter may have been estranged from his older children by circumstances surrounding his second marriage. They had little to do with him after he married Catherine. In 1835, Peter had sold his parcel of land in Harrisonburg to his brother William shortly before William's death, despite the fact that three sons were married and raising families in Rockingham County. When Peter died, his will was proven in Shenandoah County in September 1849. He mentions his second wife and their three daughters, but none of the children of his first marriage.

If I find any more information, I will let you know. Please let me know when you update your website. You have a wonderful website that I hope to look at more closely later!

    Thanks,
    Dee Fuhrman

    Notes:

Migration of the Sprinkle family (From The Sprinkle Family in America):
The Sprinkle family's migration follows the trail of William Senior's two oldest sons, William and Henry. During the early 1780's they headed southwest with many of their neighbors. From the rocky hills of Pennsylvania they slowly moved their faith and families to the fertile and rolling valley of the Shenandoah River. At least half of the settlers of this Valley of Virginia could boast of a German ancestry. During the course of the next fifteen years, the Sprinkel kin and cousins discovered different places to call home in Virginia. Virginia was the most populous of the original thirteen colonies. By 1800 it had 91 counties and a population of 880,000 many of whom were slaves, although the German settlers had little tolerance for slavery. For a few years, William and Henry sojourned with their families in Berkeley County (Jefferson County in 1801, now West Virginia). Casper Walper married Henry's daughter, Mary, on 3 June 1789. When Casper died there in 1815, Mary stayed on his farm. She evetually married Joseph Engle and later died in the area on 8 October 1846. In 1799, Casper acted as surety to bond the marriage of Henry's daughter, Elizabeth Sprinkle, and John Darnhafer. William's daughter, Elizabeth, married William Becket in 1792, and his son, Peter, married Nancy Redfern on 16 March 1800. Another son, Anthony, may have married during this same time period. He resided in the Berkeley area for a number of years as the 1810 census shows.
