Cynthia - known to all as Cindy - grew up in Wakefield, Virginia with her Mom, Dad
and three sisters. Her Dad worked very hard in the 1950's and 60's to raise four girls!
Cindy was the third of the girls having two sisters 2 and 3 years older and one, 10 years
younger. She remembers her Dad going to get the groceries and always bringing back a bag of penny candy for them. Her dad wanted a boy very much and Cindy was the closest that he came to getting one. She remembers going to work sometimes with him as a carpenter and fishing with him which was one of his favorite pastimes. Her dad's friends and many in Wakefield called Cindy "Little Brock". (Brock being her Dad's nickname) She also remembers that her dad often MADE the three older girls go out to clean fish. He could gut them as fast as three girls could clean them! One other job that they would always groan at was unloading wood that he would bring home for their wood stove. As a young girl she was quiet in her ways. She walked to the Wakefield Christian Church which was just about three doors from their home each Sunday and remembers some of the songs that she learned as a young child there. Cindy remembers the Church Revival that she joined her two older sisters and first cousin at the front of the Church to ask Jesus to come into her life and also remembers her baptism and the dress that she wore. She was 11 at this time. Other childhood memories are roller skating and bicycling all over town, Sunday School picnics at Moore's Lake, and summer Vacation Bible Schools.

BAILEY, Ethel Edwards, 90, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Born in Surry County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Wilma James Edwards. She is survived by her daughters, Rachel B. Billups (Jimmy), Marie B. Williams (John), Cindy B. Chappell (Wayne) and Juanita Bailey Hacker; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church, the U.M.W., and a former member of the Wakefield Christian Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, General Mahone Chapter, the Wakefield Woman's Club, and also volunteered at the Wakefield Library for a number of years. Many will remember her working with the Sussex County School System as a cafeteria worker from 1966 to 1994. She continued as a foster grandparent working with kindergarten and first grade from 1994 to 2004. The family will receive friends at the Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, June 21, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wakefield or Ivor Volunteer Fire Department or to a church of your choice.
