    THIRD GENERATION
6 1 MARTIN JOHNSON, son of (4 2), was born in what is now Surry County in 1640 No record of his marriage has survived, but we know from his will that he had six children. He doubtless was a planter as his father and grandfather were before him, working the land in western Surry County that had been granted to them. His name appears frequently as a juror for manslaughter and larceny trials during the latter half of the seventeenth century and he often appeared as a witness for property transfers, etc. Martin Johnson's will was recorded on July 16, 1687 and was probated on May 4, 1703. His property, as indicated in his will was considerable and included slaves, a large munber of cattle, and much in way of household furnishings.

    Notes:

    SECOND GENERATION
k 2 JOHN JOHNSON, son of (1), was born at Jamestown in 1623. On February 25, 1638 John Johnson and Edward Travis were granted 900 acres in Surry County (then part of James City County) three miles from the mouth of Upper Chippokes Creek and upon its east bank." Since the Travis family is well documented as having been one of the largest landowners in the Virginia colony, we can conclude that the Johnsons who held joint patents with them were persons of.means and respect. John's sister Ann married Edward Travis and inherited part of her father's land. On July 5, 1653 John Johnson sold some of the land from his 1638 patent to Bob Roberts. It appears that the family lands on Jamestown Island were maintained, as several references are made in James City County deed books to property additions and transfers by John Johnson in 1654 and 1662. As a landowner, he was frequently called as a juror per early court records. We are unable to find a record of his will and therefore are uncertain of his date of death.

  1. 8.  JOHNSON John, Sr. was born before 1616; died in bed 1637.

    Notes:

    FIRST GENERATION
1 JOHN JOHNSON was an early settler of Jamestown, his presence being recorded there as early as 1616. Records of the Virginia company note a commission sealed in May 1619 for his passage from England to Virginia in the ship Bona Nova and we assume that this was a return trip.2 John Johnson, his wife Ann, daughter aged 4, son John aged 1, and maidservant Alice Kean were living on James Island in February 1624. John Johnson, Yeoman and Ancient Planter of James City, was granted 100 acres located on Archer's Hope Creek (on James Island east of Jamestown, of James City) on January 12, 1624. The title of Ancient Planter indicates that he was in fact present in Virginia before or during the time of Governor Sir Thomas Dale (1611-1616). Ancient Planters were entitled to have free land and special legislation in 1623-1624 exempted them from military service and taxes, church duties excluded. John Johnson's title of Yeoman infers that he was a freeholder next under the rank of gentleman and anciently meant that he owned property and was entitled to vote, serve on juries, etc. He died before 1637.
