Thanks so much, Gene. My dad was so proud of his Virginia heritage. He always told my mom that Georgia was settled by debtors' prison inmates. In my research ,I found my mom's close ancestors were from Virginia. I guess they came south looking for cheap land through a lottery. My great grandfather who served in the Civil War was an overseer on someone else's plantation north of Macon. So maybe my dad was right. All of this is so interesting! Why didn't they tell us more? Again, thank you for such a fantastic website. Bonnie
Gene, here is information I have. Asa Bernard Johnson, Jr. ( No one in these parts called him Bernard; here he was known as Johnny.) Born: Nov.29 1907 in Danville, Va. Died: August 27, 1976 in Macon, Ga. of Emphysema. Notes: A. B. J. Jr. served in the United States Navy in World War 11. According to the US Muster Roles , he served on the ship Antaeus and was mustered out June 11, 1944. He was a part of the effort to supply American Troops fighting in Northern Africa. He was a Manufacturer's Representative (salesman), showing samples from manufacturers in New York to retailers across the South East. He married Lucille Adams of Taylor County, Ga. (don't have the date) and they had one daughter, Bonnie Sue. Lucille's parents were Cora Davis of Taylor County and John Quincy Adams of Macon County. Notes: Lucille's paternal grandmother was Emma Rumph, a part of the Rumph family famous for producing a new variety of peach at their Willow Lake plantation in Macon County, Ga. Samuel Lewis Rumph, an early horticulturalist, named it the Elberta Peach after his wife. Later, he developed an ice packed railroad car to transport Georgia peaches as far away as New York.
Bonnie Sue Johnson (Bonnie) was born July 19, 1941 in Macon, Ga.-Bibb County. She married Cathey Alexander Smith of Macon born Oct.9, 1941 on August 3, 1963. Cathey's maternal second great grandfather, Osgood Willingham, founded an Architectual mill working company in 1882 that still operates in Macon today and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Cathey served as its President until his death in 2005. His and Bonnie's oldest son, Brian, holds that title today. Bonnie and Cathey had 3 sons: Bernard Brian Smith born January 25, 1966, Cathey Alexander Smith, Jr. born June 8, 1969 and Adams Hearn Smith born January 27, 1975. Cathey Alexander Smith, Jr. has three daughters: Allyson Grace born Dec. 7, 2000, Melanie Kim born Oct. 1, 2002 and Anna Catherine Smith born June 13, 2005.
Bonnie remarried in 2007 Robert Watson Hearn, Jr. born Dec. 23, 1937 in Macon, Ga.

Asa, as a young boy, worked in the Rogers' family stores. One the old store in Spring Grove is no longer standing. The Rogers family owned several stores. One at Carsley and one at Spring Grove were two of them. Ramey, who was related to the Rogers family also owned a store.
Asa Bernard Johnson worked in the Rogers Store on Carsley road (corner of Carsley and Otterdam Roads) across the road from Carsley United Methodist Church when he was young. This store was owned by Asa's mother (Mahala Elizabeth Rogers') family. While working at the store, Asa wrote arithmetic equations and signed his name in several places on the plaster wall of the building behind the store. Rogers Store at the corner of Carsley and Otterdam Roads has been restored and is open as a museum. The signatures of Asa Bernard Johnson can be seen on the wall. At the present, there are numerous store ledgers still existing with many family names and what they purchased. Call the Surry County Historical Society to view the store and its many interesting contents.
A portrait painted by Asa's grand daughter, Brenda Johnson Duckwall, of Asa's father, David Peyton Johnson (husband of Mahala Elizabeth Rogers), hangs in the store.
He later owned a grocery store on Grove Avenue in Petersburg, Virginia.
note: per Doris Jean Goodrich Johnson this store was owned by Nora Rogers when Doris Jean was a child) and was on Rt.10 Rt.40 NW side at Spring Grove in the triangle. 2 story with an attached wharehouse type building.
Asa Bernard Johnson and his wife Nelie were very generous and kind people especially evident during the Depression Years. Asa was not much concerned with making a profit from his store. He frequently let people have food "on credit" whether or not they could pay him back. They also took people into their modest home at 303 Lafayette Avenue in Colonial Heights.

I am very much interested in seeing if the Beverly Booth connection would qualify me for the Jamestown Society. He is my DAR ancestor through his daughter Mary E. who married John C. Rogers. Her daughter married David Payton Johnson, my great-grandfather and Confederate ancestor. I'd be interested in any information you might have.
Can you connect the Rogers line to the Revolution? My other Surry lines are Maddera, Sledge, Cotton and Hobbs. There are a couple of others but I'm not sure if they were widows or if the names were maiden names.
Look forward to hearing from you soon! Pat Hall
.......................................................
There was a small Bible with "Edmon Johnson's book, July the 17th, 1832" in his hand writing inside the back cover and "Surry Bible Society" and "David P. Johnson" inside the front cover...Information from William Adler Fox and Bertha Johnson Bartlett:
EIGHTH GENERATION
37 1 DAVID PATEN JOHNSON, son of (28 1), was born on August 5, 1840. His early life must have been spent in a busy household with his half-brothers and sisters growing up around him. He and his father and these brothers undoubtedly worked the same plots of land along the county line and Blackwater River that had been worked by previous generations of Johnsons.
In 1862, war came to Virginia and Surry County and David enlisted in Martin's Battery, Company "B" 12th Battalion, Virginia Light Artillery, commanded by Captain S. T. Martin. His enlistment occurred 01 May 3, 1862, in Richmond. Also serving in his and other Surry County units were many of his present or future relatives, including his half-brother Randolph. He was almost immediately detailed as a teamster for his battalion which was with General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Early in the war, his unit had been stationed at Fort Clifton Franklin, and along the Blackwater River. At about the time that his unit was engaged in battle with Butler's forces in Chesterfield County, he was detached from his unit and detailed as a courier to Major F. J. Boggs, Battalion Commander. At some point during the final months of the war, Private Johnson was taken prisoner by Union forces and was held until he was paroled on April 16, 1865, and allowed to return home. It is said that under the terms of the surrender he was allowed to keep his horse but that it died on the way back to Surry and he had to walk the rest of the way.
He returned home and soon began courting Mahala Elizabeth Rogers, who lived on a farm close to his father's. They were married at her home, Pleasant Hill Farm, on January 29, 1867, and went to live and work their farm of about 100 acres on Route 612 between Carsley and Route kQ. Some of this land was given to them by Mahaley's mother, Mary Booth Rogers. Roads in the county were more intensive then than they are now and maps of the era show several Johnson farms and have references to a "Johnson's Mill" and "Johnson's Bridge." These places are now overgrown with forest and no one remembers to whom they belonged. David and Mahaley built a modest farmhouse and had their first child, Sidney, on January 20, 1868. He was followed by seven brothers and sisters between then and 1885. The death of his sister, Mary Elizabeth, in 1893 brought great sorrow to the family as she was a lovely girl of but 23 who was shortly to be married. The Johnsons were a strong family, it appears, as eight healthy children were raised when infant mortality was high due to epidemics. Within a few years after the turn of the century, all of the children had married. Granddaughter Bertha Johnson remembers visits to her grandparents at their farm, these always lasted all day as a six mile drive in a "surrey with the fringe on top" was required to get there. Their house was a one-and-a-half story with a parlor that David had added. The kitchen was detached from the house and as this was before the era of the screen door, Mahaley always had trouble keeping the chickens out. For the same reason, someone would have to stand over the table at mealtime and wave a "shoo-fly" (paper streamers crimped onto a reed) to keep the flies away. Mahaley is remembered as a stern and statuesque woman who was as vigorous as she was durable. As Bertha recalls, "What she knew, she knew. She was set in her ways." Her husband, in contrast, was a quiet, gentle, and genteel man. He was a teetotaler except for a glass of.homemade blackberry wine that he would accept after the ride to see his son, Sidney, at Marl Spring. In later years, David was sometimes sickly and he blamed his illnesses on months of poor conditions in prison camps during the Civil War. He died at home on August 12, 1919, and was buried near his farm. His wife inherited the farm but sold it shortly afterward and went to live with her son, Sidney, and his family. On a visit to her son, Asa, in Petersburg she contracted pneumonia and died on May 8, 1923. She was buried beside her husband and daughter, Mary Elizabeth.

Nat Sturdivant
Some Recollections of Him and of His Capture in Front of Petersburg
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
I have seen something in your Confederate column about one of the brave captains of the old Twelfth Battalion of Virginia Light Artillery, Nat Sturdivant. I was personally acquainted with Sturdivant and was a member of the Battalion. I endorse what Mr. Shifflett has written. I was an eye-witness to a good part of what he has related. I don't think he or any other man can say too much for that brave man.
At the time of the Seven Days' fighting in front of Richmond our battalion was at old Camp Lee and Sturdivant's battery and S. T. Martin's battery, of which the writer was a member, were not equipped for service, but we were ordered to the front all the same.
I don't know just where Studivant's company was sent, but I was on picket duty between Richmond and the battlefields. That was in the summer of 1862.
In May, 1864, when General Grant landed his troops at City Point, and our small force held Petersburg. I was acting as courier for the commanding officer of our battalion, F. J. Boggs and was sent on that memorable day to carry a dispatch to Sturdivant. I road down the City Point road to our lines, and knew not where to find the Captain until I met with R. A. Pryor. He told me where Sturdivant was and I crossed the road leading to Prince George Courthouse and upon the hill at ___(looks like 205) battery, I found Studivant.
I went back to Petersburg and that night Captain Sturdivant and his men stood to their guns and fired at the enemy until they broke through our lines and took him prisoner. After he was exchanged, he was promoted to the rank of major of that battalion, and Captain Boggs was sent to some other command. The last time I remember to have seen Major Sturdivant was on Sunday morning , April 9, 1865, when he gave me a piece of Old Virginia bacon and bread to eat between Appomattox Courthouse and Lynchburg.

Received from Brenda Duckwall, 1/2011:
Joshua had a son, William Franklin Harrison, who had a daughter, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison, that had a
son, David Harrison Johnson, who is my father.
One of my New Year goals is to try to link Joshua with the President Harrison line. I think that he may have
been a cousin of some sort. I think that they were all well off financially since they are related to the Booths,
sent William Franklin Harrison's wife, Sarah E. Baird, to France to receive treatments for T.B. Sarah died
January 22, 1888 of T.B. leaving my grandmother who was only 16 months old. I have sympathy for William
loosing his wife, having young children to take care of, and loosing his father when he was a teenager. I guess he was too preoccupied to keep family records but I would like to go back and find out what his grandparents (Joshua's parents) names were and possibly link our family to the Presidents.
from Brenda Duckwall:
The Harrison Home is at 3840 Otterdam Road in Surry County.
The land where the home is located and about 1000 acres belonged to our Ellis ancestors from the early 1600's. The land and original home was given by Bolling Ellis to his daughter and our ancestor Ann Rebecca Ellis who married Joshua Simmons Harrison. It was passed down or purchased by sons and daughters: William Franklin Harrison, Joshua James Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Jr., and presently to Julian R. Harrison III and his sister, Robin Harrison Mitchell.

William Franklin Harrison was just 34 almost 35 when his wife died. He had 6 young children and his widowed mother in his house hold. He may have had a sister in the household. His sister and mother did help him with the children. They were all recovering from the Civil War. If his wife's grave is unmarked, it would be understandable that he did not purchase a stone.
This is from the Surry County Historical Society:
The Harrison Farm
located at 3840 Otterdam Road
Surry County, Virginia
"The following information has been researched by Julian R. Harrison, Jr.
The Harrison Farm was once owned by Bolling Ellis. The Ellises were in Surry County as early as 1667. The
original farm consisted of 760 +/- acres. Ann Rebecca Ellis married Joshua Simmons Harrison April 1, 1848 in Surry, Virginia. She inherited the farm from her father, Bolling Ellis.
Joshua James Harrison inherited his part of the farm from his father, William Franklin Harrison, in 1907, and bought the remaining shares from other family members….."
I don't know where Julian received the information whether it was Court records, Wills, or passed down information.
He seemed to check things carefully.
I may have given you a copy of this information with a picture of the house and farm.
Court Records or a Will might firm up the proof….

From: Brenda Johnson Duckwall:
These are stones at Waverly Cemetery in Waverly, Virginia for Joshua James Harrison ("Nellie" Adelaide Cornelia Harrison's brother who had just
had a birthday and turned 8 when his mother died). His daughter, Helen, was just one years old when she died.
William Franklin Harrison and Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison had 6 children: Lottie, Myrtie, Joshua, Herbert, Clarah, and my grandmother, Nellie (long e sound).
When William Franklin Harrison's wife died he moved closer to his mother, Ann Rebecca Ellis Harrison. His mother and sisters helped to take care of the children.
William's oldest child was Lottie Baird Harrison (Wanda Goodrich Temple's grandmother). Lottie had just turned 12 years old when her mother
(Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison) died on her birthday, January 22.
JUST FOUND IN MY NOTES THAT SARAH ELLIS BAIRD HARRISON IS BURIED IN PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, NEAR NEWVILLE. So maybe we were on the
trail the other day when we were looking for the Kirkham Cemetery.
Kirkham Cemetery Location in the Report: 1.2 miles north of Disputanta, Virginia, on Route #618; thence .8 mile northwest on Route #629; thence .1 mile south
of Route #629. Prince George County, Virginia.
Kirkham Cemetery is located about fifty yards east of the residence, in the corner of an open field (1937). The plot is about sixty feet square, fenced in and neatly
kept (as of 1937). There is a lone cedar tree and one tombstone marking two graves.
Graves include: Martha Stainback Kirkham, William Kirkham, Joshua Simmons, 2 young daughters, Ann Simmons Harrison, and her husband, William Thomas Harrison,
James William Harrison, Martha Simmons Stainback and her husband, Peter Stainback, their young son, and possibly more.
I plan to volunteer to help inventory cemeteries in Prince George so maybe we will eventually come across Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison's grave. I'm also looking for William
Franklin Harrison's father's grave. His father was Joshua Simmons Harrison. If Joshua Simmons Harrisons mother was a Simmons, it would make sense for his son
William to bury his wife with his grandmother's family.
William married BAIRD Sarah Ellis on 9 Feb 1875. Sarah (daughter of BAIRD Alexander Peter, Jr. and BOOTH Rebecca Ann) was born on 27 Jan 1854 in Dendron, Surry, Virginia, United States; died on 22 Jan 1888 in Mayenne Pays de Loire, France; was buried in Surry County, VA (Lois Goodrich Cemetary on Rt 612). (Medical):sent William Franklin Harrison's wife, Sarah E. Baird, to France to receive treatments for T.B. where she died.
Hi Gene,
Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison died in 1888. Her daughter married a Goodrich much later but did the Harrison's have a connection with the Goodriches or the Goodrich farm in 1888. There is no marker for Sarah in the Goodrich Cemetery and Sarah is not recorded on either of the cemetery inventory papers that Wanda showed us (written by her family).
The note I found was written by Sarah Johnson (Collier Johnson's wife) when they paid someone years ago to research family history. They think that she is buried in Prince George near Newville.
She died in France (receiving treatments for TB) so I guess there is even a chance that they did not send her body back home.
It's a mystery I guess....
Thanks for all the info and CD! It has been fascinating!!! And very helpful!
Brenda Johnson Duckwall
Sarah was my grandmother, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison's mother. Sarah died of TB in France at Place Mayenne, Pays de la Loiire when my grandmother was just two years old. Sarah had been sent to France by her family to do everything they could to save her. The place that she went was suppose to be one of the best places for recovery but she did not make it.
Looking at the pictures does bring a great deal of sorrow that she must have felt at leaving her husband and young family and meeting her death in a strange and difficult place.
Brenda, from every bit of information I have, I believe this is it...The white car you see belongs to the guard who asked us to leave. The name was changed in 1975 to Medical Center of La Fontaine-au-Bac, but the old sign is still there. You can look it up using Le Claviere Villiers-Charlemagne. All of this is located in the district of Mayenne Pays de Loire. Please forward to Gene Harris and anyone else who might be interested. I have a friend who is willing to write a couple of letters in French to the "town halls" of the area.
Baldwin County is only one county over from us. (abt. 40 MILES.) bONNIE

According to Sarah Smith Rowell Johnson (wife of Turner Collier Johnson who was the son of Joseph Franklin Johnson and Edmonia Salome Collier).....
Sarah E. Baird Harrison (wife of William Franklin Harrison) who died of TB on January 22, 1888 (the date of her oldest daughter's birthday, Lottie, who had turned 12 years old that day and also leaving my grandmother Nellie who was 16 months old, her other children Joshua, Herbert, Myrtie, and Clarah)
"is buried in Prince George County near Newville."
This could possibly place her at the Kirkham or Simmons Cemetery.
The Coleman Simmons Cemetery is 1.7 miles northwest of Disputanta on 460 then about 100 yards north of 460 in Prince George County.
The Kirkham Cemetery is described to be 1.2 miles north of Disputanta, Virginia, on route 618; thence .8 mile northwest on Route 629; thence .1 mile south of route 629, Prince George County, Virginia.
The Kirkham Cemetery contains the remains of Joshua Simmons and his daughter, Ann Simmons Harrison and her husband, William Thomas Harrison who are the great grandparents and grandparents of William Franklin Harrison, Sarah E. Baird Harrison's husband.
The Kirkham Cemetery also contains the remains of Joshua Simmons' daughter, Martha Simmons Stainback and her husband, Peter Stainback, and their son, Adolphus "Doll" and daughter Martha Stainback Kirkham.
Susanna Harrison Figg is the sister of Joshua Simmons Harrison who is William Franklin Harrison's father and Sarah E. Baird Harrison's (b. January 27, 1854 - d. January 22, 1888) father-in-law. Susanna is Sarah's aunt in law.
It would make perfect sense for Sarah E. Baird Harrison to be buried there at the Kirkham Cemetery.
Perhaps the new Prince George Cemetery Project and Clarah's grand daughter can help us out. Thanks so much!
