When James Arrington Goodrich was born in 1800 in Belfield, Virginia, his father, Washington, was 28 and his mother, Frances, was 20. He married Mary A.R. Spencer on December 7, 1824, in Greensville County, Virginia. He then had two sons and two daughters with Mary Spencer. He died in 1880 in Greensville County, Virginia, having lived a long life of 80 years.

Notes for Washington Goodrich:
Washington Goodrich was the oldest son of Benjamin Goodrich. He had land and slaves from his father. During his life he made many real estate transacitons. In 1804, 4178 acres; 1806, 122 acres; 1806, 178 acres; 1817, 368 acres; 1817, 150 acres; 1820, 11 acres; 1820, 23 acres and 1823, 166 acres. THe 1810 census of Greensville shows Washington with three sons and one daughter. In 1820 he had 24 slaves. Washington left no will and there is no estate record, surprising given his extensive property. In 1825 he paid personal property tax on 12 slaves and 6 horses, but by 1829 he is gone from the tax books, and must have died about this time.
