Notes:
Jessie Merle Chappell. ( Wednesday, February 10th, 1999 I'm 78 years old. We have been married for 58 years as of Saturday the 30th. He is 84 years old and we got married on his birthday. Four children. Two girls and two boys. And I wanted six, because the lady over here across the road, Mrs. Pageant, had 10. And, I thought it was wonderful, and I said one out, of the 10 would look after... you know when you get old. I really had five and lost one, and the last one I had cried so much I said this is it. No more babies for me. I lived up the road two miles and 1 he lived here, and uh, he used to , come up there with the other kids and we played together and I had no idea about him, but he had an idea about me. I remember one time we were out there pumping water and he come and said... he wanted to know... how old I was or something, and he let me know he was interested. And, I could care less. I think I was 13 years old. Well, really we grew up to- gether. I didn't never really know 1 was in love, it just automatically came in there, (with a chuckle). We just started dating and uh, we dated with a coupIe across the road, Vernice and Robert Moore. We dated until we were 16 and 21. At first it was just now and then, but around graduation we got closer and closer. I had no idea that he was gmng ff to ask me to marry him, and we 1 were going to Petersburg and were up in Prince George. I don't know what the name of the road is, some- thing Gumeyville, and he stopped underneath the oak tree and gave me a diamond. They al1 get a big kick out of that... thekids go by there and say, 'which tree?' Wel!, there is no tree there now. I couldn't imagine why he was stopping, (with a hearty laugh). He stopped, and then he wanted a kiss, and then he had the box, and then he gave me the diamond. We really didn't have any romantic, whatever, you know. It was just built on up. He's never brought me flowers or anything. We don't even get each other Christmas presents. We never have. We just buy what we want during the year and when Christmas omes, we spend it on the kids. We built a little house up here: it's that house on the hill, we built thati Well, first we moved over across the road and that house 1 burned out and then we had built this one before that one burned out, so we were livin' on this one on the , hill. And, we came down here when, uh, Sherry was one year 01d. She's 47 now. So we've been right i here in this house ever since then. He's just so good. He's good and I easy and easy to get along with. You can't pick a fuss with him. And, I've tried. Not really. But, you've got to let him know that you're right sometimes. But, he's mostly always right. He's always been real good. I'll tell you... I don't reckon there's anybody been, anywhere i around here, had, as good a time as we had. We used to go drivin' with Vernice nearly every Sunday and then when I kissed him, a long time ago... we used to go on a trip every summer. And when Wayne got married, we did go on a trip with them every August until the last two. I think the happiest moment that we shared would be... I guess when I had each one of my babies. 1 re- ally wanted children. He didn't. He wasn' t raised with children. We had two girls and two boys, but 1 lost a girl. I lost a girl at birth and then I had a miscarriage. One of my kids would cry and cry, and hold her breath. She held her breath till she turned blue. I was doing something and Sherry was seven,' she practically raised her you know, she looked after her. 1 said, 'Sherry, go in there and get some - water and throw it in her face,' I always heard that would do it. So, she went in there and she got some water and she threw it in her face and when she did she was at , the stage that she was gasping air in, and when she did it went down her wind pipe and strangled her. And she was a little bitty thing, but . she knew she was gone and she re- ally stopped in her tracks, but she didn't hold her breath anymore. When Phillip lost his sister was probably one of the saddest mo- ments that we shared. He really thought alot about her. We have so many moments that are funny, I call tell you one thing that happened, but it was really within the family. Our children... he was always after them, you know. And our oldest son had to go to the bathroom every night after supper. Well, we didn't have a bathroom, so, he had to go out there, (point- ing outside). Phillip said, 'I'll fix him.' So, I said, 'What are you going to do?' and he said, 'I'm going to get a white sheet, and I' m going around behind the smoke- house and when they come out, I' m going to scare them,' Well, the little one had to go with the older one, because he couldn't go by himself. So I had to come out to see what was going to happen. So, I came on out here to the side, and they came on from the Johnny house and he got after 'ern, and they took outta runnin' in the house. And this porch won't here then. And they ran in there and locked the 100rs and locked us out- side ~ and we couldn't get in. e had a time in this world gettin' in. Finally one of them came to the door, it musta' been the one that was be- hind the chair in the livin' room- Came and unlocked the door. And, there was a day bed right here. In fact, junior had a brand new shirt on, and he was so scared... (laugh- ing) we couldn't get him from under the bed we had to pull him out - tore his new shirt. We laughed and we laughed and we laughed. It broke him too, he didn't go to the bath- room after supper anymore. No, everything we did, we did. together. We always have. He fanoed and I fanoed with him: Many a day I worked with him ~1.. day long and the next morning he had to pull my feet out of bed to get out. He didn't go his way, and I didn't go mine. We always did things, together, and then when he's farming if I wanted to go off with the girls, I went. But, he never... he was, too busy to go off with any men. Lord... I've had six or seven girl friends at a time. Mercell Blue ano Janet Kyer, we were three muske teers. I used to say, 'I can't see,' I had glasses in my pocket book, and we would go to the doctors together and they would read to me like-I - really couldn't see. It was really comical. I would say to young couples. who are just starting out - they've got to give over. They can't be a one-sided affair. Give over to each other. One can't take it all. It's give and take. Nowadays, everybody's for themself. We don't have any plans for Valentine's Day. He's never even given me a box of candy... nope... I.. really don't know why, he just didn't. I guess it's the type of person he is, I don't know, he never has We've never had much money. '. We used to go to Richmond alid - I we'd carry sandwiches along to eat. Because we didn't have the money, , to go out to eat. We were raised in the poor days. Nowadays, they all want to start out with everything. We couldn't do that. We didn't have any money to do it with. We were I lucky if we had a table and chair to , eat off of; but we did. Still have the table in yonder right now. That'll be the saddest thing that will ever happen... he goes away I and leaves me... I'll tell you right now. I've always said, well if I have to go, I hope that I would go before, he did. It looks like it might be tit for tat, (with a chuckle). It looks like both of us are going down the hill together. We're really lucky that we have four really good children. We've never had a problem with them and they really look after us and the one up on the hill', he's really', well he's here. They really have been wonderful. You know my middle name was Jessie Merle, and I didn't like Jessie. When they write their appointments down, they say (at a high screech) 'Jessie Merle.' Well, I didn't know any Jessie Merle Chappell. The kids would say, 'Momma, they're callin' you.' No, we weren' t really what you'd call a romantic couple. We just grew up together and automatically went into it. He's a better husband than I am a wife. I like to go and mingle with people and play cards and have a good time and he is more or less a home person. He . Iikes to sit. Of course, now, he really doesn't feel like going. But we really have had some good times, ain't no doubt about that. Some of them told us at the party Saturday, 'I'll tell you rig'ht now, ain't nobody around here, had any more good times then ya'll have,' and ain' t that the truth. Phillip Chappell: l've been married for 58 years as of the day efore yesterday. We got married Jan, 30th in 1941. I'm 84 years old, aDd we have four children. Well, I've been knowing her ever since she was a little bitty duck. She was born and raised up he road about two miIes. This was I long time ago now. Must've been hen I was 18, or maybe 17.We're oing back a little bit, you know. I've got a picture in yonder of er taken on a Model-T Ford. She as about this tall then, (holding Us hand out in the air). The picture as taken by her daddy down there In her yard. I thillk, I knew I was in love ound 1937-38. I don't know, I eckon it was sometime in the sum- lIer. That was a long time ago, girl. Lord, I couldn't tell you. Her momma wouldn' t let her go ut so young, so we went to... she had a brother and we went some- 1 where, we came back, and when we got out of the car her and I went to 1 a bat! game over across the swamp over here. Drivin' a Model-T Ford In them days- A 1926 Model-T- We went to the ball game and she got 1 out of the car and left me sittin' in the car, put it that way, (with a hearty laugh). Local people were playing though, you know in those days it was a country ball game not professional. I reckon we dated for about 10 years. I asked her daddy for her. I hink he answered my question. Anyway, she was about 19 or 18 or so. I didn' t get on my knees. Well. I p guess we just set a date to get mar- ried or somethjng like that, we said my birthday. I guess because it was just something to remember. She made me a good wife, hard worker, got along fine together, just a few little spats once in a while. I reckon going on trips was the happiest times, well... the happiest moment was when I got married, but then going on trips after that. We were going to Washington for snowing so we turned around and arne on back to Richmond. I don' t know that we've really lad any sad times. Why what did she say? You can't tell me? Well, 1 on'l know, I've been pretty happy myself. Well, we understood each other, we worked together and we enjoyed it. We knew when we got married it was depression times and e knew we would have to pull together and make a go of it - financially. Well, if you're starting out as a young couple I would tell them, pull together, and love each other and you'll enjoy life. We don't do Valentine's Day or I Chrismas except for our gmndchil- dren, you know. I don't know why we just never have, even since we've been married. I just can't an- swer that. I would have to say that the fun- niest moments that we've shared is our life together. We used to go to lances and stuff like that. We've beenalotofplaces. We enjoy so much being to- gether. Of course, Saturday was our big day too. We had about 130 fam- !ly members and friends at our 58th wedding anniversary. But I reckon that's about all of it. I don't know you're asking mme questlons that... well, it was about 58 years ago, now. I think I've said enough. Merle and Phillip Chappell don't celebrate just one day of love, Valentine's Day, because they have shared something far greater - 58 years together.

Notes:
Aunt Stella was always very fond of Calvin Horne and he was her little doll baby. This was before she married and had kids. She always had a nice disposition and was friendly towards everyone. Her children were like sisters and brothers to the Horne family. Aunt Stella always blushed very easily. Mary Virginia Horne remembers that Aunt Stella had a crush on a friend of Herbert Raines Horne's, Myron Benton, that moved to Conneticut and everytime he came down to visit Herbert Raines Horne, Aunt Stella had to rush over to visit and she would stand there and her face would turn red when he would walk in and she would look at Mary Virginia and say 'you little devil you'd better keep your mouth shut and don't say a word', but her face was so red that no one had to say anything.
