    Child 10: Elizabeth NAPIER (ABT 1732, , Virginia - ?) [F]
Note 1: Most investigators seem inclined to identify the spouse of Booth NAPIER either as Sarah LaForce or as Sarah Garland. Sarah LaForce, the daughter of Rene LaForce (the planter-physician of Huguenot extraction for whom Rene NAPIER is likely to have been named), was married to William Hardain (Harding) in Goochland County, Virginia, 7 November 1748. And Her marriage to William Hardain (Harding) is clearly indicated by the Will (dated 16 December 1756 and proven 18 July 1757, in Goochland County, Virginia) of her mother, also called Sarah. Of this Will, William Hardain was the executor. By William Hardain (Harding), Sarah LaForce engendered Giles Harding (15 June 1749, Goochland County, Virginia - 1810, Davidson County, Tennessee) [M], William Harding (1750, Goochland County, Virginia - 1797, Surry County, North Carolina) [M], Rene Harding (15 February 1753, Goochland County, Virginia - BEF 1766, Virginia) [M], Thomas Harding (3 October 1755, Goochland County, Virginia - 1805, Tennessee) [M]. If Sarah Laforce had first been the wife of Booth NAPIER then, since menopause usually occurs by the age of 55, she must have been no more than 12 years of age on the occasion of her first marriage. This is possible in abstracto but historically unlikely. The Will of Rene LaForce, dated 16 August 1728 and proved in 1728 (recorded in Book 1, pp. 37-38, 1728-1734, Goochland County, Virginia), names his daughter, Sarah La Force; and the Will of Sarah LaForce Harding was proven 23 March 1797 in Goochland County, Virginia. Alternatively, if Sarah Garland may be identified with the Sarah Elizabeth Garland (born at Pamunkey River, St Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia) who was the daughter of Edward Garland, then her marriage to Thomas Wingfield must be explained away. Of Sarah Elizabeth Garland's children who can be definitely dated, the following may be noted: John Wingfield (20 July 1723, Hanover County [separated from New Kent County in 1720], Virginia - 3 February 1793, Wilkes County, Georgia) [M], Frances Wingfield (30 December 1736, Hanover County, Virginia - 20 November 1802, Wilkes County, Georgia) [F], and Susannah Wingfield (19 September 1741, Hanover County, Virginia - 1827, Fredrickstown, Washington County, Virginia) [F]. It is, therefore, reasonably supposed that Sarah Elizabeth Garland was married to Thomas Wingfield about 1720. Accordingly, in the present state of evidence, the surname - but certainly not the given name - of the wife of Booth NAPIER is indeterminate.
Note 2: The register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, British North America reports that, on 19 October 1765, Will Parsons NAPIER was born to Booth NAPIER (Jr.) and Christian TERRIL whose, surname, in secondary sources, is sometimes given as NORVEL. See "Register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia," William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 2. (October 1906), pp. 113-123.
Note 3: The funeral sermon of Booth NAPIER (Jr.) was preached 23 April 1770 at St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, British North America. See "Register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia," William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 4. (April 1907), pp. 249-255.
Note 3: Patrick NAPIER, in 1744, was deputy Sheriff in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was also a vestryman in St. Anne's Parish. The children of Patrick NAPIER and Martha CLAIBORNE were: Thomas NAPIER (ABT 1736, Virginia - 1804, Columbia County, Georgia), Patrick NAPIER, Richard NAPIER, Rene NAPIER, Joseph Fox NAPIER, Mary Perrin NAPIER, Elizabeth Claiborne NAPIER, and Anne Fox NAPIER. In the given names of Mary Perrin and Elizabeth Claiborne NAPIER, compelling reason is found by which to include the deputy Sheriff of Albemarle County in this family-group.

: Robert NAPIER (Sr.), Captain [009]
Birth: BEF 2 May 1660, Hampton Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, British North America
Christening: 2 May 1660, Hampton Parish, York County, Virginia, British North America
Death: AFT May 1743, York County, Virginia, British North America
Father: Patrick NAPIER, Chirurgeon (ABT 1634, , England - AFT 26 February 1668 and BEF 12 April 1669, Queen's Creek, York County, Virginia, British North America)
Mother: *Elizabeth BOOTH (15 November 1641, , Virginia, British North America - 1672, York County, Virginia, British North America)
Marriage: 11 October 1688, New Kent County, Virginia, British North America
Spouse: *Mary PERRIN (1671/75, New Kent or Henrico County, Virginia, British North America - AFT 3 April 1718, New Kent or Henrico County, Virginia, British North America)

Note 1: Robert NAPIER (Sr.) was a landed proprietor in New Kent, King and Queen, King William, Henrico, and Goochland counties, Virginia. His principal crop was tobacco. From1690 through 1701, he received nearly 1300 acres for his importation of settlers. In the records of old King William County, Virginia, reference is made to him as "Captain," indicating that he was an officer in the colonial militia. See John Boddie, "Napier of Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi" in Southern Historical Families, vol 15, pp. 221-225.
Note 2: Concerning Robert NAPIER (Sr.) in Henrico County, Virginia, Records: 1688-89 (p. 74), the following is recorded: "Captain Soane had made an agreement to run his horse against one belonging to Mr. Littleberry Epes, which was backed by Mr. Robert NAPIER 10 lb a side. Mr. NAPIER did not produce the horse at the appointed time and the suit was for the amount of the stake, as an agreement had been made that the horse which did not appear should forfeit the whole amount." It is also recorded that Robert NAPIER (Sr.)'s wife Mary (PERRIN) once took him to court to prevent him from gambling away their children's patrimony and to ensure that he would spend a percentage of his income solely to support his family. In view of these two cases at law, it may be worth noting that Robert NAPIER (Sr.) was - by profession - an attorney and that, in his church in Hampton Parish, he held the office of vestryman.
Note 3: Mary PERRIN (sometimes spelled "PARIN") was the daughter of Richard PERRIN and his wife, Katherine ROYALL Katherine ROYALL's father, Joseph ROYALL, was among the earliest settlers of Virginia, having arrived in the "Charitie" in July 1622; and, in the following year, he was listed at the Neck of Land in Charles City. (Hotten, ORIGINAL LISTS, p. 169).
Note 4: Benjamin WOODSON was the son of John WOODSON (1655, Curles, Henrico County, Virginia - Will proven1 May 1700, Virginia) and Mary TUCKER, who were married in 1677. Mary TUCKER was the daughter of Samuel TUCKER and Jane LARCOMBE. Mary Tucker WOODSON's Will is dated 1710. The WOODSONs were Quakers.
Note 5: In May 1743, Robert NAPIER (Jr.) was sued for separation by his wife on the grounds of abuse. His Will is dated 9 December 1755 and was proven 12 May 1763. His wife, Mary Tarleton HUGHES, was the daughter of Jesse HUGHES and Sarah TARLETON, of Henrico County, Virginia. Robert NAPIER was a planter in Henrico, Goochland, and Albemarle counties, Virginia. He is thought to have inherited his father's plantation in a Will dated 1744, which has not been found. He is known to have received at least two royal grants of 300 acres in Goochland County, in1734 and 1735, by which time he had apparently moved inland, to the James River valley. In Goochland County, he deeded a negro girl to his wife on Jan 5, 1743; and he deeded a negro boy named Will to his daughter, Frances. He moved again to Albemarle County, Virginia, where he wrote his Will dated 9 December 1755.
Note 6: A Rene and a Patrick NAPIER are sometimes named as siblings belonging to this family-group. The reason for placing them in this family-group seems to be an unlikely tradition sustained in the family PERRIN. Rene and Patrick NAPIER, in fact, belong to the immediately succeeding generation of this line of the family NAPIER.

    Notes:

    From Deborah Shelton Wood (3-17-2006):
There exists an Historical Marker near Colonial Williamsburg, VA, marking the place Patrick NAPIER lived. This marker reads "Patrick NAPIER Colonial Surgeon. Nearby lived "Patrick Napier of Queens Creek in the County of Yorke chirurgeon," Born about 1634, and apprenticed to the surgeon general of the Scottish army defeated by Cromwell in 1650. Patrick Napier arrived here before 1655. He married Elizabeth, a daughter of Robert Booth, clerk of the York County Court and a member of the Howse of Burgesses. By horse and boat, Napier attended the sick, performed surgery, bled his patients, and despensed various remedied consistent with the pratice of medicine in the mid-17th century. He died in 1669. He was the progenitor of most of the Napiers in America.
Emigrated to Virginia 25 Mar 1655 with other defeated Scottish Royalists after the Battle of Dunbar .
American Napiers came to these shores, to York Co., Virginia in about 1651. He was Patrick Napier, "Chirurgeon" or physician, a son of the Patrick Napier, "Gent", who had been barber-surgeon to the Martyr King Charles I, and was a cadet of the ancient house of Napier of Kilmahew. The father may well have been the "one Napier" that Parliamentary spies had reported tried to free the imprisoned Charles from Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight in 1648.
Alternate data suggest parents of Patrick Napier to be Robert Napier of Edinburgh, son of Sir John Napier of Merchiston who married Lady Elizabeth Monteith. Sir John, eighth laird of Merchiston eldest son of Sir Archibald Napier and Janet Bothwell. Sir John, well known as inventor of logarithms .
The first known documented reference to a Napier in Scotland is in two charters of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox, who lived at the end of the 13th century. This was John Napier, who was granted, by one of the charters, - "all that quarter lands called Kilmahew lying between Muydugwen and Archerreran."The ruins of Kilmahew Castle still stand on the north side of the present village of Cardross, which is four miles from Dumbarton. Kilmahew takes its name from St Mahew (or Mochta), a companion of St Patrick, who has been adopted as the patron saint of Cardross. There were 18 Lairds of Kilmahew until the last heir sold the last of the estate in 1820.
    Early Virginia Immigrants; 1623-1666
Napier, Patrick, 1655, by Peter Ford, Gloucester Co.VA

......The immigrant Dr. Patrick Napier, progenitor of this family in America, came to Gloucester Co., in 1654 or 1655. (One Peter Ford, received 500 acres at Cacamount, Gloucester County, Virginia, 25 Mar 1655 for transporting ten persons to the colony, among whom Patrick Napier is listed.) Both he and his father-in-law, Dr. Robert Booth were among the few physicians in colonial Virginia. Lived in Hampton Parrish, York County and had a 1500 acre plantation in BlislanParish , New Kent County, Va. will dtd 21 Feb 1668; filed 12 Apr 1669 in York County, Va.

Thanks very much. I have an Elizabeth Booth, b. 1641, daughter of Robert Booth who married Patrick Napier, a descendant of John Napier, inventor of logarithms and the decimal point. A descendant of this union married a Wright, the family of my grandmother, Julia Wright.

Thanks again and good hunting. Sincerely Reid Presson

    Nicholas Presson

Notes - Apparently spelled name Pressey until abt 1707 when it appears that the family changed to "Presson". This is borne out by early records - Register of Charles Parish 16909 where Nicholas was listed as the father of a daughter, perhaps Elizabeth whose birth is recorded in Charles County Records, 1648 - 1789 as Elizabeth Pressey, daugheter of Nicholas and Jane Pressey, 1/11/1690.

Jane was his 1st wife, Elizabeth the 2nd The best guess is that Nick was born at least by 1670 and died on 4/4/1732, Charles Parish.

He married Jane by abt 1689 who died11/3/1699 as recorded in the Register although the Register lists the birth of Mary in 1700 and Thomas in 1703 as children of Nicholas and Jane.

He married Elizabeth that same year who lived at least until 1719 when her last child Daniel was born.

Robert Presson Son of Nicholas and Elizabeth, born abt 1714 In Charles Parish (births and deaths for 1714-1715 were lost by the Vestry Clerk) and died in 1757 ; in July of that year, the court speaks of him as deceased although the Register lists his death on 11/1/1757.

He married probably Frances Tomer, daughter of Jon and Mary Tomer. There is no verification of this marriage (records do not exist in this early period. The naming of a son "Tomer" and the continued use of this unusual name in later generations strongly indicate she was a Tomer and the daughter of John Tomer, Jr. and his wife, Mary born 11/1/1713, died 5/13/1757 all in Charles Parish and recorded in the Register.

Tomer Presson Son of Pobert and Frances, born in Charles Parish on 7/23/1750 and died in Surry Co in 1750. He married Elizabeth who was living in 1807 and died by 1809 in Surry.

His son James' will was unwitnessed and when brought for probate, William Cornwell (perhaps his brother-in -law) and Thomas Presson swore to the court that the handwriting was that of Tomer and that he (James) had written and signed the will.

Daughter Mary was living when Tomer made his will in 1801 and is possibly rthe Mary Presson who married William Cornwell in Surry Co. in 1808.

    Sincerely Reid Presson

I will do so and send it on. The info that I have comes from "The Presson Family in the South" published by subscription in 1974. Sponsored by W. H. O' Bryan, researched by Mary Lee Martin Owens. Long out of print; a copy was recently offered on eBay and promptly snatched up. I am an engineer by training and was introduced to Napier via the slide rule which he also invented or at least contributed to mightily. See attached for a short bio Sincerely Reid Presson

I just now looked at the Mary Cornwall segment of the tree you sent. I can give dates and citations to most named if you need them. I also found a reference to Rev. Beverly Booth who joined Mary's brother Daniel to Sarah Howard with Wyatt Lane as bondsman. The source is "Knorr, Surry Co. VA, Marriage Bonds, p 112". The same source at p23 is given for the marriage of Mary Presson and William Cornw(e)ll in Surry Co on 8/20/1808. I have not seen the source document and thus cannot verify the spelling difference (or misspelling as the case may be). Sincerely Reid Presson

    Father:

JOHN NAPIER ( 1550 - 1617 ) PHILOSOPHER and MATHEMATICIAN INVENTOR of LOGARITHMS INVENTOR of the DECIMAL POINT ________________________________________ John Napier was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1550 and died in 1677. He was twice married, firstly to Elizabeth ? with one son, and secondly iin 1572 to Agnes Chisolm with 5 sons and 5 daughters. He is buried in St, Cuthbert's Churchyard in Edinburgh. Napier was involved in research that required lengthy and time consuming calculations of very large numbers. Once the idea came to him that there might be a better and simpler way to perform large number calculations, Napier focused on the issue and spent twenty years perfecting his idea. The result of this work is what we now call logarithms. Napier is relatively little known outside mathematical circles where he made what is undoubtedly one of the single greatest advances in the history of mathematics. He can be placed within a short lineage of mathematical thinkers, beginning with Archimedes in ancient times and by Newton and Einstein in modern times. Without Napier 's work on logarithms it is difficult to imagine how Kepler and Newton could have made their great advances in later times. His work, Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio, contained thirty-seven pages of explanatory matter and ninety pages of tables, which facilitated the furtherment of astronomy, dynamics and physics. Napier realized that all numbers can be expressed in what is now called exponential form, meaning 8 can be written as 23, 16 as 24 and so on. What make logarithms so useful is the fact that the operations of multiplication and division are reduced to simple addition and subtraction. When very large numbers are expressed as a logarithm, multiplication becomes the addition of exponents.

Example: 102 times 105 can be calculated as 10 2+5 or 107. This is easier than 100 times 100,000. Napier was also a great advocate of the decimal fraction system invented by Stevinus in 1585. Indeed, it appears that Napier introduced the decimal point into common usage and eliminated the use of notation to indicate fractional position.

    * PATRICK NAPIER married in 1658 ELIZABETH BOOTH, who was born 1645 and died 1672. She was the daughter of Dr. Robert Booth, an early Virginia colonist and his wife Frances. Dr. Booth and his wife first lived at Belleville, Glouchester County; he later became clerk of York Co. in 1639, Justice in 1652, and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1653-54. Dr. Booth died in 1657, leaving a thousand-acre plantation and a large library.

"The Booths were descended from a noble family in England, and it is reported that there is still a vacant title to which the oldest Branch in this country is entitled.
"The first one of this family to emmigrate to this country, was, we have been told, the son of a Baronet in England, and owned a very large estate in what we call the Highlands, then considered superior to the low grounds.
"They were genuine specimens of good old English Squires, and remarkable for their great integrity of character. Most of the oldest families in Gloucester County, Virginia, were either descended from, or connected with them. In the 'Ancestry of William Clopton of Virginia' is found, 'Robert Booth of Belleville, Gloucester County , Virginia, father of Anne Booth, wife of William Clopton, Gent.'
"In 1637 Robert Booth bought land; 1639 - was made Clerk of York County; 1652 - was Justice; 1653-54, was member of the House of Burgesses; 1654, member of Assembly from York; and he was a physician.

Robert Booth and his son-in-law, Patrick Napier, were among the first doctors in colonial Virginia. Robert also served as the Clerk of York County, Virginia and then in the House of Burgesses

Robert Booth of "Belle Ville," Gloucester County, Virginia, was a physician (Robert Booth the Dr. was not a doctor per Sonia a professional researcher (not for me, found the reference) she said that he was the county clerk and attended at a death and that is where the Dr. assumption came in, county clerks were paid to attend at deaths for the legal purposes, i.e. wills etc......... . He served as Clerk of York County, Virginia, from 1640 to 1657 and represented York County in the House of Burgesses, 1653 and 1654. In 1657 he died leaving a widow Frances (born 1609 according to her deposition 1668). Robert Booth's Library, valued at 14 pounds sterling contained not less than 300 volumes, we are told in Brun's Constitutional History of Virginia. Colonial records show that Mr. Booth left at his death 23 thousand brick, valued at 184 shillings. Brick was manufactured either by a planter's own slaves on the premises, or by transient labor in those days. Land conveyances from and to Robert 'Bouth' dated, 1639; 1642; 1649, 1652; 1653; Charles County Patent Records (later York County), show that he was possessed of extensive tracts.

    3. Extracted from Genealogies of Virginia Families from the Tyler Quarterly History and Genealogy Magazine Volume I, Genealogical Pub County, Balto MD, pp. 173-174 "BOOTH OF YORK COUNTY We know of three distinct Booth families in Virginia. There was the Booth family of Gloucester County, from which Gen. William. B. Taliaferro was descended. Then there was a numerous family of the name on the south side of the James, going back to a very early date. The York County Family appears to have no immediate connection with either of these, and has died out in the male line. Robert Booth was clerk of York County from 1640 to 1652. That year (1652)he represented York County in the House of Burgesses, and in 1654 he was again a representative. He died in 1657, leaving a widow Frances , born in 1619, [sic] according to her deposition in 1668. Oct. 25, 1658. An order concerning a debt due Mrs. Frances Booth, widow of Robert Booth, deceased. (York County Records.) They had issue ...

Another son was probably Humphrey Booth who married Margaret Underwood and had Humphrey Booth, Jr., Grace Booth and Catherine Booth. William Booth was probably another son and married Mrs. Thomas Chapman on 12 August 1657. His wife is listed as Margaret. (The Mecklenburg Signers & Their Neighbors, by Worth S. Ray, page 467-468) William sat on the York County Bench of Justices as early as 1677. His wife was undoubtly Margaret Bray sister to Anne Bray. (William and Mary Quarterly, old Series, by Tyler, Volume I, Booth of York County, p. 174-175) William and Elizabeth had an only child Elizabeth who married Thomas Nutting and had children as listed in William's will page 130, dated 13 May 1692. William's granddaughter Katherine Nutting was the second wife to Capt. Robert Armistead whose first wife was Elizabeth Booth daughter of Robert Booth 2 and Ann Bray. 5. According to a history of the Patrick NAPIER family, Robert Booth received land in Charles River County, later York, in 1638.

SOURCE: "Gen. of Virginia Families", Vol. IV, P. 26, Booth File "Robert Booth died 1657, leaving widow, Frances and three children -- (1) Elizabeth married Dr. Patrick Napier; (2) Robert married Ann Bray; and (3) Anne m. 1st Thomas Dennett and 2nd William Clopton.... "The records show that George Baskerville married Eliz., a daughter of Hugh Norvell of James City County; and Thomas Dennett, mentioned above as first husband of Ann Booth, had a sister Mary, who married John Baskerville, and they were the parents of George Baskerville, who married Elizabeth Norvell.

Gene This is great, just keep it coming!!!!I'll get it done at some point, until then .... by the way Robert Booth the Dr. was not a doctor per Sonia a professional researcher (not for me, found the reference) she said that he was the county clerk and attended at a death and that is where the Dr. assumption came in, county clerks were paid to attend at deaths for the legal purposes, i.e. wills etc......... make sense? it does to me. Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: 'Gene . I also have CD Rom and a burner, and zip drive, and scanner. I'm set up for art work/graphics---Photo Restoration and my painting (am setting up a separate web page for my art that will link to my genealogy page below). The 600 dpi scan of Elliots obituary is great, fits to the page and prints up nice, the 150 dpi is unreadable as too small or pixelated and blurry when enlarged on screen or fit to page to print. (I assume you knew that and that's why you sent the 600 dpi .jpg file with the spread sheet copy which is also nice) I'm hoping to find photos of my line and the places or area they lived in, and the family bible; grandpa Charles Coleman Cox said in a letter c. 1960 that 'there is a family bible.......haven't seen it for about 50 years but know it existed' (he died in Feb of 1964 of cancer). That might put the bible as last seen about the time of his granpa Charles Cocks/Cox death in 1905/06 (will dtd Apr 1905/ filed Sept 1906 Surry County court). Have photos of him and one of one sister, one of his brother in a family Christmas card, I found these in grandmas papers after she died in 1992, and that's as far as the photos go. my snail mail address: Sharon Cox-Pulsipher550 E 300 S Hyrum, UT 84319USA (435) 245-3280e-mail: spulsiph@cache.net

As you know, I am searching for the maiden name of Frances Booth, wife of Robert Booth (b. 1605 in England, m. about 1632, York County, Virginia, d. sometime before Oct. 26, 1657, York County,Virginia). I have searched the Virginia Library Archives plus other sources, including ships' passenger lists from: http://www.primenet.com/~langford/places/va160.htm

I have been able to find the following, and am wondering whether anybody has more to add.

SOURCE: "Gen. of Va. Families", Vol. I, P. 173, Booth File "Robert Booth...died in 1657, leaving widow, Frances, born in 1619, according to her deposition in 1668. "Oct. 25, 1658, an order concerning a debt due Mrs. Frances Booth, widow of Booth, deceased. (York Co. Records) "They had issue: (1) Elizabeth, (Thomas Gibeons deed dated Nov. 15, 1641, giving to her as 'daughter of Robert Booth' 50 acres of land)* (2). Anne, (3) Robert, (4) Eleanor, and probably (5) William." *NOTE: We believe Thomas Gibeons is the father of Frances. His will does not include her by name - but here again, he may have felt he did for her or her child all that was necessary by giving Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Booth 50 acres of land in deed dated Nov. 15, 1641, and didn't include Frances in will??? Thomas Gybson's will of 1562 provides for wife, Elizabeth, and this may be her granddaughter, namesake.

I searched Thomas Gibeons, and variations of spellings for marriages between 1590 and 1619 and found four such entries with the spouse named "Elizabeth" in the IGI. As I am tracing my matrilineal line back as far as I can for mtDNA studies, I am looking for both Frances's parents.

The IGI lists the following marriages for "Thomas Gib*": NAME Thomas /GIBBINS/ SEX M PAGE Batch #: M016482, Sheet #: , Source Call #: 0417121 NAME Elizabetha /FARNA/ GIVN Elizabetha SURN FARNA SEX F MARR(IAGE) DATE 30 Sep 1605 PLAC Berkeley, Gloucester, England

I also downloaded the Virginia Musters for 1623/4 and 1624/5 plus lists of those who had died.and was unable to find a "Thomas Gibeons." To rule out variations on the spellings of his name, I searched as "Gib*" which would pick up anything beginning with the letters, "Gib." There were no Thomases. I also scanned numerous ships' passenger lists from the web site,

And did not find any gentlemen named Thomas Gibeons and variations of spellings thereof, as well as a Robert Booth or Frances Booth/Gibeons/Gibbons, etc.

If anybody has something to add, please do so.

This might interest you. A quote from "Old Virginia Houses." Page 78. " BELLEVILLE, on one of the most beautiful sites on the south side of the North River [Ware Neck], was built on land acquired by John Boswell and John Booth in a grant from the Crown in the 17th century....the two were wholesale tobacco buyers who did an export business between Gloucester and London...Their office...is still standing...." It would not be difficult to contact the current owners of Belleville if you are interested.

    Descendants of Robert Booth
Estate papers have not been found for Robert Booth (many times referred to as Dr. Robert Booth / Bouth) in York Co, VA records. Therefore the children listed below are those individuals thought to be his descendants by most contemporary researchers. ********************
My ancestor was Ann Booth 1647-1716 m. to William Clopton. Her father was Robert Booth b. 1610, but it is a mystery concerning his actual father. There seems to be a number of contenders. I'm hoping someone has this mystery worked out.

    The issue:

Robert Booth b. 1610 has multiple contenders for his father. This Dr. Robert Booth is said to have been born in both Virginia and England. He is listed as a qualifying ancestor for the Jamestown Society.

It seems that his GRANDFATHER is either...
    a. Sir William Booth b. 1541 married to Warburton, or
    b. Sir William Booth (Bothe) b. 1520 married to Davenport

Concensus seems to be that his mother was "a" Katherine Anderson (b. 1568) daughter of Sir Edmund Anderson.

Contenders from Sir William Booth b. 1541

    a. Sir George, 1st Baronet, was married to the Katherine Anderson mentioned above but they had not child named Robert and they did not leave England.

    b. Edmund (aka Edward) Booth is said to have been an English lawyer but died without issue. No spouse listed.

    c. Robert Booth (b. 1570) was a soldier said to have died in action in the Netherlands.

All three were said to have been Robert's (1610) father and all married to "a" Katherine Anderson.

Contender from Sir William Booth (Bothe) b. 1520

    a. Edward Booth b. 1568 also said to be married to "a" Katherine Anderson. This could be William Booth's son, but it could also be a grandson based on difference of the years involved.

Issues: I do believe that one of the Sir William's listed above was a grandfather or even great grandfather of Robert Booth (b. 1610), but which one? There are problems with every contender.

Obviously all these men cannot be married to Katherine Anderson daughter of Sir Edmund Anderson. It is possible there could be another Katherine Anderson, but then her parent's would be unknown at this time. It seems more likely that Robert's mother is unknown.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    "Booth of York County
We know of three distinct Booth families in Virginia. There was the Booth family of Gloucester County, from which Gen. William B. Taliaferro was descended. Then there was a numerous family of the name on the south side of the James, going back to a very early date. The York County family appears to have had no immediate connection with either of these, and has died out in the male line.
Robert Booth was clerk of York County from 1640 to 1652. That year (1652) he represented York County in the House of Burgesses, and in 1654 he was again a representative. He died in 1657, leaving a widow Frances, born in 1619, according to her deposition in 1668.
Oct 25, 1658. An order concerning a debt due Mrs. Frances Booth, widow of Robert Booth, deceased. (York County Records.)
They had issue 1. Elizabeth. (Thomas Gibeons dec'd, dated Nov. 15, 1641, giving to her as "daughter of Robert Booth" 50 acres of land.) She married Dr. Patrick Napier, ancestor of the Napier family of New Kent, Goochland and Albemarle. 2. Anne, who according to her tombstone, was born in 1642. She married (1) Thomas Dennett, (2) William Clopton of New Kent. 3. Robert. 4. Eleanor, born 1649, and probably (5) William Booth.
In the records of the General Court Novemb. 11, 1672, Robert Booth is named as "son and heir of Robert Booth," and was permitted to patent 1,000 acres of land in New Kent Co. granted to his father, Robert Booth, Sr. He married Anne Bray, daughter of Col. James Bray of the Council and Angelica, his wife, one of the "White Aprons", who were placed by Bacon in 1676 upon his earthworks before Jamestown for the protection of his men. Robert Booth died in 1692, and was buried in the chancel of Hampton Parish Church in York County. His widow in 1693 married 2dly. Peter Temple, by whom apparently no issue (as he died in 1694 - Bruton Parish Register). She married 3rdly about 1695 Mungo Inglis, first Grammar Master of William and Mary College.
It is unfortunate that no will of Robert Booth can be found. But by comparing the depostiion of Thomas BOoth in 1705 (William and Mary College Quarterly, old series, by Tyler, Volume XVI, p. 192) with the reference to Mungo Inglis' "son-in-law" (step-son) on page 183 of the same volume it seems certain that Thomas Booth was his son. A sister undoubtedly was first wife of Captain Robert Armistead, for Thomas Booth, dying without any children, left large legacies in money and real estate to her son Booth Armistead (See Tyler's Quarterly VI, pp. 260-263) which, upon Booth Armistead's premature death in 1727 descended to his brother Capt. Ellyson Armistead. Among the children of the latter, suggestive of descent, were Robert Booth Armistead (whose only daughter Mary Marot Armistead married John Tyler) and James Bray Armistead.
William Booth was probably another son of Robert Armistead, the clerk. He sat on the York County Bench of Justices as early as 1677. His wife was Margaret and he had a daughter Elizabeth who was second wife of Capt. Robert Armistead, having previously married Capt. William Sheldon. Her children were Booth, Robert and Angelica. No doubt Katherine's Grandmother Margaret was like Anne, the mother of Captain Armistead's first wife, a daughter of Col. James Bray. Apparently two Bray sisters married two Booth brothers, and Captain Robert Armistead married successively the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Col. James Bray.
Mungo Inglis was born about 1657 (deposition in York County Records) and died in 1719 (Bruton Parish Register; Perry, Church Historical Papers). His wife Anne Bray died in 1711 (Bruton Register). They had five children - three girls and two boys. All appears to have died early save James, who was clerk of Isle of Wight County from 1724 to 1732, when he died. After the death of Thomas Booth, issueless he became the heir at law of Anne Inglis, formerly Anne Bray.
He married Anne Marot, daughter of Jean Marot, a French Huguenot who kept ordinary in Williamsburg. Upon his death Anne Marot married James Shields, and upon James Shields' death in 1750 she married on June 11, 1751, Henry Wetherburn, who kept the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg.
By his marriage with Anne Marot James Inglis had a daughter Judity Bray Inglis, who in 1751 was, under age but in 1753 was married to William Armistead. As the heir of her Grandmother Anne (Inglis) Bray she received that year (1754) a certain half interest in lands devised by Col. David Bray, brother to her said grandmother. (Hening, Statutes at Large, IV, p. 371, VI, p. 412; Bray Family, William and Mary College Quarterly, XIII, pp. 266-270.)

    Descendants of Robert Booth

Estate papers have not been found for Robert Booth (many times referred to as Dr. Robert Booth / Bouth) in York Co, VA records. Therefore the children listed below are those individuals thought to be his descendants by most contemporary researchers. This researcher would very much like to obtain primary source records documenting parentage of children thought to be from the marriage of Robert Booth and Frances (Gibson / Gibeons / Gideon??). Further information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

    "Booth of York County
We know of three distinct Booth families in Virginia. There was the Booth family of Gloucester County, from which Gen. William B. Taliaferro was descended.
