He learned the art of cabinet making from his father and made it his business. In 1859, he married Sarah Catherine Sprinkle in Rockingham County, Virginia. They were the parents of four children: Charles William and John Wesley (twins); Amanda Jane who married James T. Barnett, and Ada Virginia who married John Dawson Ardis. Charles William died in 1882 of a gun-shot which accidentally discharged when the gn was removed from a load of lumber.

James William Rudd took his family and joined others from Botetourt County, Virginia in their move to Harrison County, Iowa, arriving there in June 1870. He established himself there as a cabinet maker and continued that business until 1881 when he sold his business and took up farming in Union Township of Harrison County, Iowa. He had traded a house and lot and his stock of furniture for the farm and then he bought the lumber and grain business which had belonged T. M. C. Logan.

Politcally, James William was supporter of the Democratic party. He and his family were Methodists. James was also a member of the Masonic fraternity Chrysolite Lodge No. 420 at Logan, Iowa as well as the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

    Notes:

    Birth:
A tragic time in the life of Peter's family came when Nancy died in about 1819. Peter was alone with at least six children. Peter married his second wife, Catherine Hulvey, on 3 Dec 1921. In a few years, Peter Sprinkle migrated from Rockingham County down river to Shenandoah County, leaving his children in Rockingham. Peter's son, Samuel R., likely cared for his brothers and sisters. The 1830 census places most of the family near each other and Samuel apparently has his youngest brother and sister living with him. Peter remained in Shenandoah County with his second wife and three unmarried daughters. This was his final home. As reported to the census taker, Peter Sprinkel's age and birthplace match the birth records of York County, providing a vital link of evidence in a complicated migration chain. Peter had very few land dealings in Rockingham County and none in Shenandoah despite his 35 years there. Peter may have been estranged from his older children by circumstances surrounding his second marriage. They had little to do with him after he married Catherine. In 1835, Peter had sold his parcel of land in Harrisonburg to his brother William shortly before William's death, despite the fact that three sons were married and raising families in Rockingham County. When Peter died, his will was proven in Shenandoah County in September 1849. He mentions his second wife and their three daughters, but none of the children of his first marriage.

Subject: RE: William Tottington Rudd I need to add all the notes....William T. Rudd and his family were in Alexandria when the british invaded during the War of 1812...his father was a shopkeeper...Alexandria surrendered rather than be burned down..... Maybe this is the same info you already have...I will check your website....and I'll let you know when I add anything.....Sue

William Rudd and his family immigrated from England between 1801 and 1807. He died in 1821 in Alexandria which was in the District of Columbia. (Reverted back to Virginia in 1846)
During the War of 1812, the British burned several buildings including the White House in Washington, DC, on 24 August 1814. They then invaded Alexandria. In order to keep the British from destroying the town, Alexandria's inhabitants surrendered and gave them their food and supplies. William Rudd was a shopkeeper and the Rudd children were between the ages of 5 and 18 at the time.

Gene.....this is the sampler Ann Tottington Rudd (William's sister) made and is quite famous.....it was the key to my finding William and his family.....in books, magazines...and even on this site from the library....it has always said Ann "Torrington" Rudd......

You can plainly see that she stitched Tottington......

I noticed your ancestry profile said you live in virginia.....is there any chance you could get them to make this correction...??

Like maybe take your shoe off and pound it on the table......didn't anybody ever notice it said Tottington...!!!

I'm going to try and put this on "Crane - Grady" genealogy.....I'll let you know when I get it finished....

    Sue

William Tottington Rudd was the fourth child born to William Rudd (1775-1821) and his wife, Mary Anderson. Both of his parents were born in England, his father having specified that he was born in Nottinghamshire. The entire Rudd family endured the War of 1812 and many of them also endured the Civil War in Alexandria as well. William Tottington's father, William, died in Alexandria in 1821 and there are no clues as to what happened to his mother.

When William Tottington was a young man, he moved to Amsterdam, Botetourt County, VA where he met and married his wife, Lydia Amanda Hutchins on July 28, 1832. William Tottington Rudd established himself as a cabinet maker in Botetourt County. He and Lydia were the parents of five children: Mary Ann, John Wesley, George Washington, James William and Matilda Jane.

The Civil War was not kind to Botetourt County and the end of that war saw many families leaving the war's destruction and moving to Iowa. William Rudd and his family were among those who headed for Iowa.

William and Lydia were in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa by December of 1873. Lydia died on December 14 of that year in Logan. After Lydia's death, William remained in Iowa until about 1896 when left many of his family members and moved to Downey, California, where he died in 1898.

William Tottington Rudd was the only one of William and Mary's children to leave the Washington DC/Alexandria VA area. So he is responsible for many of the Rudds we find today in Botetourt County, Virginia as well as Harrison County, Iowa and Los Angeles County, California.

    Inscription:
No marker has been found, but cemetery records called William "William Toddington Rudd". He was the grandson of John Rudd and Elizabeth Tottington, thereby indicating that his middle name, like that of many of his sibings, is Tottington, not Toddington. Cemetery records also indicate that he was born in 1810, but Alexandria records give the date stated on this memorial. It should be noted that at that time, Alexandria was a part of the District of Columbia.

Subject: Re: New message from genecharris on Ancestry.com: RE: Sprinkle
Attached are the pictures I have associated with J.M.R. Sprinkle. This is the additional info I have on him:
    Census Information
In 1850 Census, listed as a stonecutter. In 1860 and 1870 censuses, listed as a farmer.
Confederate Captain in The Civil War
J.M.R. Sprinkle was a Captain for the Confederacy -- Company: Sprinkle's Company, Regiment: Burk's Virginia Local Defense. One Muster Roll card states Catawba County, Burk's Reg't, Botetourt Home Guards.
Redford or Redfern? Other sources show his name as John Morgan Randoplh Sprinkle and John Morgan Redfern Sprinkle. Margaret L. Sprinkle Sopp believes Redfern is the most likely because his mother's maiden name is Redfern. Records from Virginia Crawford Hawley show his name as John Morgan Redford Sprinkle.
Place of Birth According to records from Virgie Hawley (J.M.R. Sprinkle's great-granddaughter and my grandmother), John Sprinkle's place of birth was unknown. Virgie stated that he came to Rockingham County at the age of 17 from Ohio. However, Margaret L. Sprinkle Sopp, who has researched the Sprinkle family, states "I'm confused as to why John would have stated he was from Ohio. All census records show a Virginia birth. Additionally, he was born in 1811 and his father was living in Rockingham County at the time of the 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses. That said, I've always found the following excerpt from a letter written by Charles T. Burton to Robert Wayne Helton dated 12/10/1966 interesting: 'Col. John Morgan Redford Sprinkle 1811-1889 married 9-8-1834 to Mary Jane Barley 1819-1898. When he was 17, he came to Rockingham County, Virginia. It was understood he was an orphan, but no one said who his parents had been. There were lots of other Sprinkles in the county who must have been relatives. He soon made lots of friends and in 1857 he was elected to the House of Delegates from his adopted county. In the same year, he bought his first land in Botetourt County and soon moved onto it.'" Margaret further states, "Odd, huh? We do know he was very young when his mother, Nancy, died and it's been suggested that Peter didn't have much to do with his children by Nancy once he married again. It's quite possible that's what the orphan reference means." I noticed on your website that you have J.M.R. Sprinkle's place of birth as Rockingham County, Virginia. Do you have a source for that information? Would love to find something that verifies his place of birth. If you find out anything else about him, please let me know! I named one of my sons Jared Redford Fuhrman, thinking that Redford was a family name. Looks like I may not have been right, but I still love the name. :) Dee Fuhrman fabfuhr5@aol.com

According to my records, John Morgan R. Sprinkle's ancestors were:

Peter Sprinkle (b. 3 Jun 1778 in York County, Pennsylvania, married Nancy Redfern in 1800 in Berkeley, West Virginia, d. 12 Sep 1859)
William Sprinkle (b. 1735 in York County, Pennsylvania, married Catherine in 1765, d. 1805 in Rockingham, Virginia)
William Sprenckel (b. 1695 in Germany, married Anna Catherina Ehrhard on August 6, 1727 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, d. 16 Jan 1772 in York County, Pennsylvania)
Johann Heinrich Sprenckel (b. 1650 in Rhineland, Pfalz, Germany)
Johann Peter Sprenckel (b. 1610 in Rhineland, Pfalz, Germany)

I was told as a child that we were distant cousins of Amelia Earhart, I now wonder if Anna Catherina Ehrhard was an ancestor of Amelia Earhart's. Will have to look into it later...

William T. Rudd and his family were in Alexandria when the british invaded during the War of 1812...his father was a shopkeeper...Alexandria surrendered rather than be burned down.....

I am reluctant to assume that Peter and Christian are the same person. I will keep looking for documentation to support the theory. Also, I have never seen anything in writing (besides the book, Related Families of Botetourt County, that states that John Morgan's name was Redford. Although the book is a great source of information, I believe it may contain some errors so I keep looking for other sources to corroborate what's contained in the book. Sure wish the census records listed his full name somewhere! The civil war records and tombstone don't list his full name either. Maybe we'll run across something...

Please let me know if you find anything else! ... Dee

Thanks, for the info. I have seen the book and used it as a source for some of my other ancestors, also. I am confused, though, as to why page 172 indicates that Col. J.M.R. Sprinkle was the son of Christian Sprinkle. This does not match the information I have recorded. I have J.M.R. Sprinkle's father as Peter Sprinkle, married to Nancy Redfern, and then after Nancy's death to Catherine Hulvey. Perhaps Christian was a relative who took Peter in after Nancy's death?? (although I don't have a Christian Sprinkle in my index)

I have several notes about Peter, including:

If I find any more information, I will let you know. Please let me know when you update your website. You have a wonderful website that I hope to look at more closely later!

    Thanks,
    Dee Fuhrman
