Surry County High School alum Joshua Scott will deliver the commencement address to the 2008 graduating class of Surry County High School at 10:00 a.m. June 14 at Luther Porter Jackson Middle School

Scott, son of Chris and Cindy Scott, is a '96 graduate of Surry County High School and was named class salutatorian. After graduation, he attended the University of Virginia on a full academic scholarship.

As an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, Scott was very active in student organizations, ranging from Resident Staff to the University Guide Service. He also worked for the late Virginia State Senator Emily Couric of Charlottesville, starting as a legislative intern and working his way up to deputy campaign manager during Couric's 1999 re-election campaign. During his fourth year, Scott lived on the Lawn at U.Va. and graduated in 2000 with degrees in American Government and Religious Studies.

During his career, Scott has served in a variety of roles with the University of Virginia Center for Politics. He has also assisted author and professor Dr. Larry Sabato with numerous publications.

Scott is currently Associate Director of Development for Cancer Programs - University of Virginia.

Obituary for Carl Holt Scott
Carl Holt Scott, 76, of Waverly, passed away on November 5, 2013, with his family by his side. He was born on October 9, 1937 in Surry County, VA, to Ryland Ambrose Scott and Hilda Holt Scott. After his retirement from farming, he was proud to work as a logger with his son and grandson. He loved to garden and spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Irene Peffer Scott; devoted friend Jeanette Jones Cornett; and his sister, Gay Scott. He is survived by his children, Chris Scott (Cindy), Kevin Scott (Gladys), Kathy Torrence (David), and Lorraine Ford; his siblings, Louise Parham, Richard Scott, and Keith Scott; grandchildren Joshua Scott (Anne Iverson), Justin Scott (Tina), Caleb Torrence (Caitlin), Abram Torrence, and Hannah Ford; and great-grandchildren Amber Craze, Graham Scott, Timberly Scott, and Stihl Scott.

The family will welcome family and friends from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9th at his home, 26309 Petersburg Road, Disputanta, VA. A private memorial will be held for the family. Hilda Holt Scott, 99, of Waverly passed away peacefully Thursday, August 22, 2013 at her home. A lifelong resident of Surry, she was the daughter of the late James H. Holt and Denna Elizabeth Barham Holt. She was a loving, faithful, hard working mother, homemaker and farmer's wife. Mrs. Scott loved to quilt and sew and was an avid gardener who excelled at canning vegetables. She was a member of Carsley United Methodist Church and the Rusty Needle Club. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ryland A. Scott and a daughter, Gay Scott. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Carl Scott of Disputanta, Richard Scott and wife, Alice of Waverly and Keith Scott and wife, Becky of Dinwiddie; daughter, Louise Parham of Claremont; sister, Doris Barnes of Hampton; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 great great-grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Wakefield Chapel with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery.
