Briggs Family
Within recent years Virginia has had no more painstaking and indefatigable genealogical researcher than Mr. Lee Nicholson of Wakefield. Descended from many of the early and more prominent families of Surry, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Sussex and Dinwiddie counties, he has with almost unreckonable energy pursued the histories of these families through the public and private records still in existence. His store of knowledge of many families is both rich and most reliable. Some years ago he made extensive search into the history of the Briggs family, from which he is double descended. With great care he prepared and account of the descendants of Major Charles Briggs (1732-1801), of Southampton County, which account is herewith published.
Major Charles Briggs (1732-1801), of Southampton County, was son of George Briggs (died 1785), of Sussex County; grandson of Charles Briggs (born circa 1664; died 1730), of Surry County; and great grandson of Henry Briggs (circa 1635-1686), of Southwark Parrish, Surry County.
Charles Briggs, Sr., who was know as, "Major Charles Briggs," was born on December 6, 1732, and served with the rank of Major in the "French and Indian War," and also as Major under General Washington in the Revolutionary War, and was called "Rapid Charles" from his quick or rapid movements. (Note: His service in the Revolutionary War is unlikely.
According to information from DAR Database (http://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A014332. Accessed 24 Feb 2012), he served as a civil servant in 1775. His service is described as Sheriff, 1775; and Commissioner of specific tax, 1782).
His homestead, known as the "Millbrook Place," was situated on the line of Sussex and Southampton counties, on the Old Plank Road leading from Petersburg to Jerusalem C. H. (now Courtland), about a mile north of the once post office, "Enterprise," and about twelve miles north of Jerusalem C. H. His dwelling was in Southampton County, but as his
plantation was in both Sussex and Southampton counties, he was often spoken of as of Sussex County.
Major Charles Briggs was first married to Miss Elizabeth Blow, by whom he had the following children:
1. Martha Briggs, born March 8, 1760; died in 1815.
2. George Briggs, born April 25, 1764; died October 28, 1785.
3. Jane Briggs, born March 19, 1766, died January 4, 1769
4. Charles Briggs, Jr., born June 11, 1768.
5. Samuel Briggs, born November 18, 1770; died November 10, 1799.
Elizabeth Blow Briggs, first wife of Major Charles Briggs, died on July 5, 1779.
Major Charles Briggs was married to his second wife, Miss Sallie Andrews, on March 1, 1780, by whom he had the following children:
William Briggs, Sr. (afterwards Captain), born December 10, 1780. Resided at the Old Homestead of his father where he died on September 3, 1845.
Sarah Briggs, born December 6, 1781. Died on July 25, 1829; married Howell Nicholson.
Henry Briggs, born August 3, 1783; married Miss Sallie Nicholson.
Frances (or Fanny), Briggs, born January 11, 1785; Married Capt. Colvert.
Anne Briggs, born September 7, 1786; Married Rev. Jeremiah Cobb, of Southampton County, Virginia.
Mary Briggs, born April 14, 1788.
Polly Briggs. (Date of birth unknown)
Rebecca Briggs, born February 9, 1791; died in 1815.
Dorothy Briggs, born July 10, 1793; died in 1862; married Rev. Benjamin Devany of M. E. Church of Virginia.
Major Charles Briggs was born December 6, 1732, died January 22, 1801; aged 68 years, 1 month and 16 days.
Sallie Andrews Briggs, second wife of Major Charles Briggs, was born December 10, 1749, and died January 26, 1801; aged 51 years, 1 month and 16 days.
