Robert Pond was a General Laborer prior to WWII. He served in Europe as a Squad Leader in Company G, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division during the War and was badly wounded at Kriegsheim, France on 2 December 1944. He was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Sergeant on January 3, 1946. He moved his family to Whitesville, Delaware where on August 21, 1946 he purchased a small farm of 29 1/2 acres from Signe C. Spratt, widow of RFD # 1 Pittsville, Maryland for $1.00 and other valuable and lawful considerations as stated in the Deed. He trained to be a Mechanic with General Motors under the GI Bill and gained employment at the Henlopen Motor Company in Lewis Delaware where he stayed for about 10 years. He made the 30 mile trip twice a day. He left Henlopen and worked for Townson farms for several years and moved the family to a place near Rehobath, Delaware. Later he drove a taxi and a Pyrofax Gas truck in the town of Lewis, Delaware until he had a stroke in the early 1970's. Afterward he lived with his youngest son Richard until medical attention was required at all times. His wounds during the war qualified him for treatment in the VA hospital and Nursing Home in Phil., Pa. where he resided for about five years. His daughter Jeanette reclaimed Robert from the VA nursing home after deciding that her father was not going to die in the place He lost most of his recent memory when he had the stroke around 1972. Robert stated on July 03, 1997 during a family visit that he was assigned to G-Company, 314th Infantry, 79th Division as an Infantry Squad Leader when he was wounded by a German Tiger T-88 Tank in France during WWII. He remembers landing at Marseilles, France and fighting in the Hedge-Rows. He also stated that he took basic training at camp Walters, Texas. His induction record on file at the Court House in Covington, Virginia states that he was inducted on April 25, 1944 at Fort Meade, Maryland, departed the states on October 12, 1944 and returned on December 29, 1945, then was given a Honorable Discharge on January 3, 1946. His area of operations was GO33WD45: Rhineland; Central Europe and he was wounded at Kriegsheim, France on December 2, 1944. His service number is 33-885-620 and VA case number is 08429741. Tanner's Company L, Artillery, Jones's Battalion and later Cutshaw's Battalion. From the middle of 1863 until the end of the War he is listed as Absent on detached service. He was paroled on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox as a Private in the Staunton Artillery, Cutshaw's Battalion, Army of Northern Virginia. Pond 1882. * Magnes is listed as a Overhauler by trade on the Allegheny Co., Va. birth register for Texanna in 1884 and an unnamed female in 1885. * Magnus used his initials M. W. on most of the records that I have found. There is a small cement marker with the initials M. W. laying in the family plot of Edward Pond in Crown Hill Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Va. This indenture made this 19th of December in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty four between William C. Pond and Norrosa E. Pond his wife of the first part and Patrick H. Rawlings of the other part, all of the County of Southampton, Parish of Nottoway and the state of Virginia. Witnesseth: that the said William C. Pond and Norrosa his wife in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty dollars of lawful money of the commonwealth to have in hand paid or secured to be paid by the same Patrick H. Rawlings at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged). Have bargained and sold and by the presents, do each of them bargain and sell unto the said Patrick H. Rawlings, his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land containing seventy three acres be the same more or less, it being his proportion of the track of land that his deceased father Peter Pond. Deed seized including the dower interest which was paid off by proper notes and bonds by commisioners attended by the county surveyor, reference being had thereunto belonging to or in anywise assertaining to the same or any part or parcel thereof. Deed of William C. Pond 1834 Southampton Co., Va. Book 23, Page 395

This indenture made this 19th of December in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty four between William C. Pond and Norrosa E. Pond his wife of the first part and Patrick H. Rawlings of the other part, all of the County of Southampton, Parish of Nottoway and the state of Virginia. Witnesseth: that the said William C. Pond and Norrosa his wife in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty dollars of lawful money of the commonwealth to have in hand paid or secured to be paid by the same Patrick H. Rawlings at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged). Have bargained and sold and by the presents, do each of them bargain and sell unto the said Patrick H. Rawlings, his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land containing seventy three acres be the same more or less, it being his proportion of the track of land that his deceased father Peter Pond. Deed seized including the dower interest which was paid off by proper notes and bonds by commisioners attended by the county surveyor, reference being had thereunto belonging to or in anywise assertaining to the same or any part or parcel thereof. To have and to hold the said seventy three acres of land with the Tenaments (unreadable) and all and singular other than promises herein before mentioned or intended to be bargained and sold with every part and parcel thereof with ever of their rights unto the said Patrick H. Rawlings his heirs and assigns forever. And the said William C. Pond and Norrosa his wife for themselves and their heirs the said land with all and singuar the promises and appurtenances before mentioned unto the said Patrick H. Rawlings his heirs and assigns free from claim or claims of them the said William C. Pond and Norrosa his wife or either of their heirs and of all and every other person or persons whatsoever, shall, will and do warrant and forever be held by these presents. Note: This Indenture was presented in Court on March 16, 1835 and a Certificate was issued. This Document is the only record establishing Peter Pond as the father of William C. Pond.

This contract made the 19th day of May 1852 between Jackson C. Scarbrough of the first part and Norrosa M. R. Pond widow of William C. Pond late of Matoaca in the County of Chesterfield on the other part. Where as a marriage is shortly to be solemnized between the above named parties and the said Norrosa M. R. Pond is unwilling that the little property of which she is possessor consisting of 4 beds and their furniture and bedsteads, 3 tables, 4 chest, 6 chairs, 2 cupboards, 2 large trunks, looking glass, the usual kitchen utensils, $16.00 by the estate of A. J. Cokes and James Cokes, 2 dogs and dower right in the 143 acres of land in Southampton should pass out of her control by the contemplated marriage. And whereas it hath been agreed by the said parties that the said Jackson C. Scarbrough should only enjoy the benefit of the before mentioned property in common with the said Norrosa M. R. Pond and her children, so long as the parties to this writing may be and remain together. Now this writing witnessed that the entire control of all the above mentioned goods and chattels be now in the possession of the said Norrosa M. R. Pond and what she may hereafter be entitled to by right of inheritance shall be and remain to her solely and as absolutely after the intended marriage as it would be if she remained unmarried. And be as liable for debts contracted by her during coverture as they would be if she remained unmarried. Bur by no means subject to the debts of the said Jackson C.
