    According to a biographical sketch in the COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECO RD OF NORTHEASTER PENNSYLVANIA (J.H.Beers) Rudolph spent his boyhood in No rthampton county and in 1838 came to Monroe County to make his home. In 1 843 Rudolph and his wife Sarah bought a tract of wild land in Stroud towns hip one mile west of Stroudsburg which he cleared and improved for a homes tead. Later he purchased adjoining tracts making a fine farm. His sons J ohn and Joseph went into partnership with him. He was a member of the Pre sbyterian Church of Stroudsburg.

    Shiffer, Rudolph, subect. was born June 14, 1820 in Plainfield twp.
    Northampton Co., s/o John and Betsey Shiffer, both natives of that
    locality. Later moved to Monroe Co., and their last days were spent in
    Bartonsville. Children of John and Bestey (1) Rudolph, (2) Kate, married
    James Stockhouse of Plainfield, (3) Jeremiah married Anna Maria Shafer,
    and died at Scranton, (4) Aaron married Mary Anna Drake, they lived in
    Stroud twp., (5) Sophia, married George Heffron, of Luzerne Co., (6)
    Margaret marred Reuben Thomas, of Stroudberg, (7) Alfred married Eliza
    Ann Narman, and they lived in Scraton, (8) Joseph, married Sallie
    Kennery and they had one son, Harry, (9) Ella married John Stockhouse of
    Hamilton townshp and had 2 childre, Jacob and Lizzie.

    member of the Presbyterian Church. Children (1) Mary Ann, born March 4,
    1847, married Enoch Yeagler (his second wife) of Stroud twp., and left 2
    sons, James and Howard. (2) Catharine, the 1st wife of Enoch Yeagler,
    and left 2 sons, Strewart and John, (3) Hiram, he married Martha Shively
    of Pocono twp and had 7 children, Thomas, John, George, Laura, Annie,
    Sara, and Burton. (4) Daniel, born 1848 died 1852, (5) John, born 1852,
    married Emma Dennis and they had 3 sons, Oscar, Stewart and Rudolph. (6)
    Etty Jones, born 1853, married Thomas Metzgar, of Hamilton twp. (7)
    Joseph, born 1856, married Ellen Drake of Cherry Valley and they had,
    Jennie, Mary and Russel, (8) Jacob Wesley born 1859, married Laura
    Edinger and they had one daughter, Florence, (9) James Erven, born 1863
    died 1863, (10) Lewis, born 1867,married Mary Edinger, d/o Peter and
    Amanda, and they had children, Bessie born 1891, Ruth, 1894 and Sarah
    1897

    Sarah (Strunk) Shiffer, her parents were Jacob and Kate Strunk.

    Died in Strud Twp. near this borough, Rudolph Shiffer-at his farm residen ce on March 19, 1890-in his 70th year. He leaves a widow and 5 boys a nd 2 girls. He was 69 years, 9 months and 15 days of age.

    OBITUARY-Jeffersonian Vol 58 #26 January 12, 1899
    Mrs. Sarah Shiffer, widow of the late Rudolph Shiffer died at the ho me of her son Lewis Shiffer, in Stroud Twp. near this borough, last Tuesd ay aged 76 years, 5 months, and 16 days. Her maiden name was Strunk and s he was born at Mt. Bethel, Northampton Co. She is survived by 5 sons a nd one daughter, namely, Hiram, Joseph, John, Wesley and Lewis and Mrs. Th omas Metzgar of Jackson Twp. Interment Stroudsburg Cemetery.

    Mrs. Sarah (Strunk) Shiffer is a veritable " Mother in Israel" and h er Christian character wins the affection of all who come within her ran ge of influence. She was born in July, 1823, in Smithfield township, Monr oe County, and still resides at the old homestead at the advanced age of s eventy-five years. Her parents, Jacob and Katie Strunk, were natives of S mithfield township but their last days were spent in Northampton County, P ennsylvania. They had ten children: Lizzie, Hannah, Sarah, Benjamin, Dav id, Jeremiah, Ellen, Charles, Annie and Catherine. Besides herself, no ne are now living except Annie, wife of Frederick Smith of Northampton Cou nty.

    1850 Jacob and Catherine in Upper Mt. Bethel Name istranscribed as Strong in index and has caused some confusion with another Jacob and Catheri ne Strunk in the area during the same period.
    Benjamin and Janette are living nextdoor. Name spelled Strong 1860 Census PA Monroe Stroud pg 765 Im 345 Living with daughter Sarah Str unk Shiffer. Catherine presumably has died.

    Jacob lived in Upper Mt. Bethel. He, also, had property and worked in Warren Co., NJ. After Jeremiah's death it seems as though Elizabeth married twice more. Jeremiah home location was Portland and his occupation w as slater; that is he worked in the slate quarries that were scattered thoughout Northampton Co. His mother, Catharine is buried in the Mt. Bethel Presybterian Church Yard. This church building is now a Slate Museum.
