There is some discrepancy regarding Alva's birthdate. When he applied f or benefits from service in the Civil War he stated that he was born Ju ne 22, 1846. He applied in 1908. While reviewing his application it w as discovered that there was also a recorded year of 1848 as his birthdat e. This was disputed in his pension file and proof offered from bible rec ords settling on 1848.
Alva served in the Civil War from September 1, 1864 to June 9, 1865. Whi le driving a herd of 7000 cattle from Chattanooga to Atlanta, GA about O ct 1864 in line of duty he received a sunstroke and was sent to Atlanta wh ere he was taken with typhoid fever and was troubled with pains in his he ad, weakness and swelling of the legs and fseizures which he felt was caus ed by exposure in the army in the line of duty.
During his last years he lived with Mildred E. Barnes (daughter of John Ro yal Barnes). She cared for him as he was quite frail. Prior to being pla ced in her care he was in a care home that was taking advantage of him. T he Barnes family called the sheriff he had him removed. He then went to l ive with the Barnes.
