The following are the parts leading up to A.B. White's involvement:
    The Capt. writes:

I went to the Hanover library this A.M. at the court house and found the following from the Civil War Reference Manual for both Confederate and Union regarding operations in N.Va., W. Va., Md and Pa.. The particular volume was for campaigns in and around Lynchburg, Salem and Roanoke.
The manuals consist of letters or reports. The report with A.B. White was written by Capt. Crispin Dickenson, Ringold(Virginia) Battery, of engagement at Cloyd's Mountain, and skirmish at New River Bridge. The location that the report was written was at Gast Mill, near Salem, Va., May 20, 1864.

"Major: In obedience to orders from the colonel commanding, I have the honor to submit the following report taken by my battery in the action of the 9th instance at Cloyd's farm, five miles north of Dublin Depot, and its subsequent operations:
The first section, composed of two 12-pounder Napoleon guns--the first in charge of Lieut. William P. Robinson, the second in charge of Lieut., A.B. White--was placed in position on the right of the road leading from Dublin to Pearisburg, and near it, and 1,200 or 1,500 yards from the foot of Cloyd's Mountain, commanding said road for that distance. The second section, composed of one- 3-inch rifled gun (iron) and one 12-pounder Napoleon, was put in position and ......................"

    The next page:
"The second gun, in charge of Lieut. A.B.White, commenced firing about the time Lieutenant Robinson moved his piece to the right at a column of the enemy advancing on our left. For twenty or thirty minutes the fire was kept up with great rapidity, doing good work. The ammunition of the limber being exhausted, the limber of the caisson was ordered to take the place of the limber of the gun, and the latter to take its place, by Lieut A.B. White. The caisson limber not being forth coming, in a few moments Lieut. White went in person to see after it, and found two of the drivers (J.J. Young and William E. Barksdale) refusing to to drive their horses up to the gun. About this time..........."

We have some info on his Civil War service that was acquired before the Internet became so available. He was shown as holding several rankings over the course of the war and possibly with several different units.

Confederate Army records show that he was actually a Senior Lieutenant in the Ringgold Battery, 13th Battalion, Virginia Light Artillery having served from 1862 to 1865. Ringgold is a small Community located East of Danville in Pittsylvania County.

This was the highest rank that we have been able to document, even though my Mother and Aunt Annie (and Dr. Ramsey, in the pension application) referred to him as Colonel A.B. White. This was apparently a title used to show respect for the veterans, even though it may not have been their actual rank.

I will send you copies of the pages that I made. I was going to e-mail but a review of the documents, in spite of showing up fine on my computer, didn't appear good at all when I previewed before printing.
