He attended McCabes University School in Petersburg. On January 31, 1884, he was married to Mattie Florence Ramey, at her father's home in Spring Grove. She was born at Spring Grove, the daughter of Joseph Ramey and Alice West, his wife. Her grandfather West (William Major) was sheriff of Surry County for over forty years. Her grandmother West was before her marriage, Lucy Caroline Warren, a direct descendant of Thomas Warren, the builder of Warren or Rolfe House near Surry Courthouse. BAUGH William Wesley (I7520)

662 314 acre land grant
In 1688, Thomas Cotton and brother Walter Cotton, patented 314 more acres adjoining the property already owned by Thomas Cotton on the Otterdam Swamp. Seven more persons were transported to purchase headlights which were then exchanged for the property: Jonathon Bolton, Jonathon Elmy, Hester Bradstock, Charles Trevor, Jonathon Moss, Alice Ems and Howell Waters. The rent rolls for Surry County in 1704 show Thomas Cotton with 257 acres and Walter Cotton with 257 acres. Apparently they consolidated their holdings and farmed it together. Both Thomas Cotton and Walter Cotton were on the Surry County Militia List of 1687 "as qualified in either estate or person to find and maintain a man and horse or to go themselves when occasion shall require.

North Farnham Parish was formed in 1683 when Farnham Parish was divided into North and South Farnham. The division of Farnham Parish occurred nine years before Rappahannock County was divided into Richmond and Essex Counties. Episcopal church was erected in 1737. The interior of the church fell into ruins during a long period following the American Revolution. In 1814, the raiders from Admiral ockburn's British fleet and the Virginia militia fought a skirmish here. Bullet holds are still visible in the walls. 1863 and 1865, the church was used as a stable by Union soldiers during the Civil War. many years without a rector, Reverend George W. Nelson became rector of the church in 1834. Six years later, in 1840, he passed away. a fire in 1887, only the walls of the church were left standing. It wasn't until 1921 that the restoration of the church was completed. The Right Reverend F. D. Goodwin was elected bishop of Virginia while he was serving as the rector of Cople, Lunenburg, and North Farnham Parishes.

I'll bet you can help me. My name is James Alfred Figg III. My grandfather was the Reverend James Alfred Figg, (who, according to his tombstone at Grace Episcopal Church in Bremo Bluff, Va where he was Rector until he died in 1968) was born at "Maycox" in 1891. I made a trip in the Fall to locate "Maycox" and was told by Carol Bowman Marks, Exec Dir. of the Prince George Co Historical Society (and it turns out is a cousin of mine) that the site of "Maycox" is within the James River Federal Wildlife Refuge. I got permission from the Federal Wildlife Dept. to walk thru, the day prior to deer hunting season, and located the cellar hole of "Maycox" (directly opposite "Westover"). I am assuming that the original "Maycox" (Maycocks) was destroyed in the Revolution, having been the model for the Skipwith's "Prestwould" which is a large Georgian Brick house***. Thus the house my grandfather was born in was a later house....I met my cousin Carol Hopkins, who came with me, and we also discovered, the site of "Hawksnest" where the family cemetery of William Henry Figg, married to Susanna Elizabeth Emeline Harrison and their children are buried, the exception being, my great grandfather, William Benjamin Figg, who married Evelyn Fulton Clarke Butts, who are both buried at Brandon Episcopal Church in Burrowsville. I would like to find out more about MY Harrisons and the Butts...... apparently Susanna was born at "Eel Banks" to the west of "Macox" and Evelyn at either "Hatches" or "Blairs" to the east of "Maycox" all adjacent to and/or included in the James River Wildlife Refuge. I have traced Susanna E.E. Harrison Figg thru the "Old Colonial Line" to which she belongs. I see that your mother was Helen Butts, which would lead me to believe that WE are kin also. But it appears that YOUR Harrisons are of the "Presidential Line". If, in fact, you are going to the Butts, Clary, Fenner, Figg annual reunion, I hope to meet you as I am going to try to be there too. I met Kenneth and Ruth Figg on my last trip, he and I are the only Figgs left, I believe, as we both have only daughters. He is my father's 1st cousin, and they would be the same age, my father having died in 1994.

Child 9: Frances NAPIER (ABT 1730, , Virginia - ?) [F]
Child 10: Elizabeth NAPIER (ABT 1732, , Virginia - ?) [F]
Note 1: Most investigators seem inclined to identify the spouse of Booth NAPIER either as Sarah LaForce or as Sarah Garland. Sarah LaForce, the daughter of Rene LaForce (the planter-physician of Huguenot extraction for whom Rene NAPIER is likely to have been named), was married to William Hardain (Harding) in Goochland County, Virginia, 7 November 1748. And Her marriage to William Hardain (Harding) is clearly indicated by the Will (dated 16 December 1756 and proven 18 July 1757, in Goochland County, Virginia) of her mother, also called Sarah. Of this Will, William Hardain was the executor. By William Hardain (Harding), Sarah LaForce engendered Giles Harding (15 June 1749, Goochland County, Virginia - 1810, Davidson County, Tennessee) [M], William Harding (1750, Goochland County, Virginia - 1797, Surry County, North Carolina) [M], Rene Harding (15 February 1753, Goochland County, Virginia - BEF 1766, Virginia) [M], Thomas Harding (3 October 1755, Goochland County, Virginia - 1805, Tennessee) [M]. If Sarah Laforce had first been the wife of Booth NAPIER then, since menopause usually occurs by the age of 55, she must have been no more than 12 years of age on the occasion of her first marriage. This is possible in abstracto but historically unlikely. The Will of Rene LaForce, dated 16 August 1728 and proved in 1728 (recorded in Book 1, pp. 37-38, 1728-1734, Goochland County, Virginia), names his daughter, Sarah La Force; and the Will of Sarah LaForce Harding was proven 23 March 1797 in Goochland County, Virginia. Alternatively, if Sarah Garland may be identified with the Sarah Elizabeth Garland (born at Pamunkey River, St Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia) who was the daughter of Edward Garland, then her marriage to Thomas Wingfield must be explained away. Of Sarah Elizabeth Garland's children who can be definitely dated, the following may be noted: John Wingfield (20 July 1723, Hanover County [separated from New Kent County in 1720], Virginia - 3 February 1793, Wilkes County, Georgia) [M], Frances Wingfield (30 December 1736, Hanover County, Virginia - 20 November 1802, Wilkes County, Georgia) [F], and Susannah Wingfield (19 September 1741, Hanover County, Virginia - 1827, Fredrickstown, Washington County, Virginia) [F]. It is, therefore, reasonably supposed that Sarah Elizabeth Garland was married to Thomas Wingfield about 1720. Accordingly, in the present state of evidence, the surname - but certainly not the given name - of the wife of Booth NAPIER is indeterminate.
Note 2: The register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, British North America reports that, on 19 October 1765, Will Parsons NAPIER was born to Booth NAPIER (Jr.) and Christian TERRIL whose, surname, in secondary sources, is sometimes given as NORVEL. See "Register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia," William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 2. (October 1906), pp. 113-123.
Note 3: The funeral sermon of Booth NAPIER (Jr.) was preached 23 April 1770 at St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, British North America. See "Register of St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia," William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 4. (April 1907), pp. 249-255.
Note 3: Patrick NAPIER, in 1744, was deputy Sheriff in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was also a vestryman in St. Anne's Parish. The children of Patrick NAPIER and Martha CLAIBORNE were: Thomas NAPIER (ABT 1736, Virginia - 1804, Columbia County, Georgia), Patrick NAPIER, Richard NAPIER, Rene NAPIER, Joseph Fox NAPIER, Mary Perrin NAPIER, Elizabeth Claiborne NAPIER, and Anne Fox NAPIER. In the given names of Mary Perrin and Elizabeth Claiborne NAPIER, compelling reason is found by which to include the deputy Sheriff of Albemarle County in this family-group.

696 8. MACKIE2 NORVELL (James1), like her sister Christian,is thought to have been named for a grandmother or great -grandmother. Both the Christians and Mackies were families who lived in central Virginia in colonial times, and they may have married Norvells or Spencers earlier. Mackie (also written as Macariner or Macaranna) was married to William Thurmond in Goochland by the Rev. William Douglas. Since Goochland was the county of her residence when she married, and since James Norvell, Sr., was the only Norvell in Goochland old enough to be her father, she is presumed to be his daughter. Because Mackie apparently married without parental permission in 1766, she probably was at least eighteen at that time, hence born by 1748. She and her husband eventually moved to Albemarle
County, Virginia, where they settled on Green Creek in the southern end of the county, near her brothers and sisters. She died in Albemarle between 1823 and 1825. Her will , dated 1823, was witnessed by Anna Johnson, and George Norvell, her sister and brother and presented to the Albemarle
County Court in 1825 (WB 8:18).
