Notes |
- Gene Harris: Okay. Now, let's get back to you, Francis. What were your hobbies? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: What were my hobbies? TIM: Your hobbies. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Only that, probably music and dancing. And I don't think I had any hobbies. Gene Harris: Okay. Now that we've had our cake, we're going to go back to recording. Now, Francis, can you tell me a little bit: What was your favorite book? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: When I was in school? Gene Harris: No. Later on in life, what was your favorite book? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I can tell you my favorite movie is Gone With the Wind. Gene Harris: Okay. Gone With the Wind was a good one. I've seen that a couple times. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: And Sound of Music. Gene Harris: Oh, that was beautiful. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yeah.
FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I was baptized in the Episcopal, Brandon Episcopal Church in Burrowsville, Virginia. Gene Harris: Brandon Episcopal Church in Burrowsville, B-U-R-R-O-W-S-V-I-L-L-E, Virginia? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Uh-huh. Gene Harris: And do you remember when that was, approximately? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Mother died in 1929. That was her last, one of the last wishes that she had, that my father and I join church. So it had to be somewhere close after she died in '29.
Gene Harris: Okay. And you, where did you go to school? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I went to school in Savage, Virginia, until they moved the school to Denburn(phonetic) Dendron High School, and then I went to school in Denburn High School, and then I went to JMU.
Gene Harris: Very good. And what, what did you do for a career. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Teacher. I was a teacher because you didn't have a lot of choice. At Madison there were only a thousand girls there at that time. And, and you could be a nurse and take a two-year nursing course, or be a stenographer and take a two-year-course. I used to take Home EC and maybe go into some, some other food, food jobs or something like that. And, but it was basically an educational school supported by the state.
