GENERAL NOTES: There is no proof of the place of his birth; however, there is proof that he owned the property at Treglossick, St Keverne, Cornwall. He was, probably, a Church Lawyer.
Because he was concerned with property in Cornwall, it is likely that he or his father were born there and that he was the eldest son. He later lived in a house on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate at Lambeth. In the visitation of Essex in 1612, he is described as 'a gentleman of London'.
PRO - EARLY CHANCERY PROCEEDINGS - 1485 to 1500, Bundle 125 (page 42) reveals that he was involved in a case, addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1486 to 1493 and 1504 to 1515) against THOMAS CHEMDEN and MAUD his wife, over the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and gardens called DORNE in Cornwall. Bundle 183, addressed to the Cardinal Archbishop of Canterbury (1493 to 1500) (page 30) concerned a case between JOHN ARGALL and JOHN KELWAY of Trespusen, (Tresprison? in Cornwall) relating to the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and land in Treglosek (Treglossik), Cornwall (which is in St Keverne Parish).
[Deeds in Cornwall County Records Office (J 127) concern Treglossak from the 14th Century, but there is no mention of any Argall connection].
