    Notes
    • Gene and Leslie met at her brother's in Camden, De. They carried on their relationship by phone when she returned home to Kansas City and after a month of long distance calls where I signed my military paycheck over to Delmarva Phone, I flew out to Kansas City to see her. We spent the time at her mother's house and talked about her coming back to Delaware. On night at dinner her mother surprised us both by announcing that it was obvious that we wanted to be together and Leslie should come back. That floored both of us. Anyway, we packed up Leslie's clothes and things in 10 trunks and suitcases and 13 dogs in crates. Boy, you should have seen the look on the reservation clerk at American Airlines. We arrived in Philadelphia we the above at 11 PM at night and the only thing we could find to rent was a car. That wasn't going to work, sooo, Gene called Al Huddleston (his boss in CCT) to say he had to wait until morning to rent a truck and needed another day of leave. Al, being a resourceful CCT'er, decided to get a deuse and a half truck and drive from Dover to Philadelphia and bring us back. We made it back at 0500 in the morning to my 3rd floor apartment in Camden-Wyoming with 10 trunks and 13 dogs in crates. Ever tried to get 13 dogs into a 3rd floor apartment at 5 am without waking the neighbors? Well, everyone woke up and helped. We stayed there for 3 months with Leslie and the neighbors taking turns walking 13 dogs 5 times a day or more. By this time we had built a "very" small kennel building out back and that helped. We used to play tennis every day at the school that was a couple of blocks away and her brother, Spencer and his wife, would go out with us to "The Nuts" or other places on the weekends. Our favorite restaurant besides "The Nuts" was "Sambos" in Leipsic DE. They had the best shrimp and crabs in the world. The tables were covered in newspaper and had rolls of paper towels and lots of cold beer. They would bring out platters of shrimp and crabs and we would all spend hours pigging out. It is still there in 2005. It overlooks the Leipsic river and is very quaint. We then moved into a house with our lawyer, Bob Barrett, outside of Smyrna and bought a small office trailer that we converted into a kennel. Leslie decided that the trailer should be painted "purple", her favorite color. It was bright and unusual. We then bought our house in Blackbird Hundred and moved the trailer until we could convert the garage into a professional kennel.

Married by: Stanley E. White, Chaplain, Captain, USAF at the Dover AFB Chapel, (Kent City) DE on the 7th day of July 1973 at 3 pm. Best man: Jay Brown of Richmond, a long time friend and classmate of Gene's. Maid of honor was Melissa Jack of Kansas City, Kansas. Marriage lic nmbr: 0 040338.

      //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Leslie's "adopted" mom from Palm Beach
      JENSEN BEACH -
Where in Martin County can you find a site that has been home to Ais Indians, pineapple farmers, Coca-Cola heirs, nuns, and college students studying the ecology of the Indian River (when they weren't partying in the Ratskeller)?
You'll have to drive into Indian RiverSide Park in Jensen Beach to get a glimpse of the once-majestic Leach mansion, still sited on a small hill overlooking the river. Decayed, dressed in weeds and graffiti, the home has seen much better days.
But that soon will change when Martin County sets about resurrecting this Jazz Age beauty along with 5,000 years of Martin County history.
"This site is of extreme importance, said Jane Greenwasser, research and development director of Friends of Mount Elizabeth. "It is both an archaeological site and the mansion is on the National Register. So you have two sets of history on the site - 5,000-year-old Indian history and 20th-century high society."
Willaford Leach owned the local Ford franchise. His wife, Anne Bates Leach, was a high priestess of local social life; she started the Stuart Garden Club and helped the Red Cross by allowing them to use the swimming pool for swimming lessons. Greenwasser said during World War II, the Leaches entertained servicemen and their wives at their Mount Elizabeth home.
In the 1930s came Coca-Cola money that paid for the existing concrete mansion built by Willaford and Anne Bates Leach. Anne Bates Leach was the niece of the original CEO of Coca-Cola, Robert Woodruff, who advised Anne's mother, Elizabeth Bates, to invest in Coca-Cola. Anne Bates Leach used part of that inheritance to build the Leach Mansion and included a special "Coca-Cola Room" in the basement. That room became the FIT "Ratskeller" where students continued its party history.
After the hurricane of 1949, the Leach family sold the site to the Catholic Church. The site was St. Josephs College until 1972 when the Florida Institute of Technology bought it. FIT closed the campus in 1986 and the site was unused until 1997 when Martin County purchased the site. The existing house was called Tuckahoe by the Leach family, who lived there until 1950.
After receiving a corneal transplant at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1970, Palm Beach resident Anne Winship Bates Leach expressed her admiration and gratitude for the Institute's services by donating the gift which launched the construction of a dedicated eye hospital for Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Mrs. Leach, whose family had holdings in the Coca-Cola Company, contributed more that $1.5 million to the state-of-the-art facility which bears her name. She was also instrumental in securing additional support for the hospital from her friends in Palm Beach.

At the April 1973 public dedication of the new hospital - the first eye hospital in the southeastern U.S. - the University of Miami gratefully awarded Mrs. Leach an honorary degree.
In the 1930s and '40s, Anne Leach Henry grew up on an 80-acre estate by the Indian River her parents called Tuckahoe, a name they said meant "welcome" in an unspecified American Indian language. Empty for 23 years, Tuckahoe the mansion is now the "Mansion at Tuckahoe," a wedding and party facility owned by Martin County.
The Depression was raging in 1936 when Anne Bates Leach, an heiress to Coca-Cola money, and her husband, Willaford, who owned Stuart's Ford dealership, bought the mound and constructed Tuckahoe on its top. The 14,000-square-foot mansion was designed with nine (now eight) fireplaces, 11-foot ceilings and an arched second-floor balcony with sweeping views of the wide, blue Indian River below.
Like the Racey house, the Leaches' mansion quickly became the area's social headquarters. Its fashionable Art Moderne interiors were the scene of any party her mother could arrange, their daughter, Anne Leach Henry, said.
"She had the garden club, the DAR, even the girls' and boy's basketball teams in there," recalled Henry, who said her mother's dramatic decorating included dividing rooms with elaborate draperies instead of doors.
A 1948 aerial photo shows the Leaches' 80-by-40-foot pool, fed by an artesian well, one of the first in Martin County. Now demolished, it was so large that the Red Cross used it for canoeing lessons, said Henry.
After the 1947 hurricane ravaged the house and the Leaches lost a tax battle with Martin County, they abruptly moved in 1950 to a Mizner mansion in Palm Beach called La Fontana. Anne and her brother, Billy, were at the University of Florida when they received an unexpected postcard. Sarah Grile/The Palm Beach Post
"My mother wrote, 'We don't live there anymore and by the way, here's our new address,' " Anne remembered.
Tuckahoe was sold to the Catholic Church, which schooled nuns then college students there, before the Florida Institute of Technology bought the property in 1972. The Leaches' mansion became FIT's administration building . While Anne Leach might not approve of the government-issue elevator, drinking fountains and commercial bathrooms installed in her house to meet county codes, she would likely be pleased about its social calendar: Dozens of parties are already scheduled for her great white party pavilion on the ancient, windy hill

Spencer also stated that Leslie had a serious drinking problem for years and died from liver failure and Hepatitis complications. Said she had been living in the Seattle are and then came to Pensylvania and bought property and didn't light it and moved to Sokane, Wa., where she died. He said something about a shrimp boat business and that Ryan Patrick (her son) was told that I had adopted him years ago. This is a confused mess. Spencer sounded like he had been drinking.
