- Mattie was one of five girls born to Marquis Layfayette Dakin and his wife, Nancy E. Kelley. Both of her parents were born in Ohio and as young adults, they moved to Iowa. Mattie was born in 1872, in Harrison County, Iowa. In the mid 1890s, the Dakins joined other families who had moved from Iowa to Los Angeles County, California.
In 1892, Mattie Lenora Dakin married John W. Rudd, son of James W. Rudd and Sarah Catherine Sprinkle in Harrison County, Iowa. There first two children, Ozella and Leon W. Rudd, were born in Iowa and their last three children, Albert, James Kenneth, and Charles William, were born in California.
Mattie Lenora Sprinkle Rudd died in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California and rests peacefully amid loving family members here in Downey District Cemetery.
