- Extracts from the Works of Joseph Francis Inman titled
"Some Ponds of Southampton County, Virginia" Published 1970.
JOHN POND who died in York County, Virginia 18 July 1688 is the earliest
ancestor of the Pond family of Southampton who has been identified.
The wife of JOHN POND was JUDITH _______, who survived him and
married OWEN DAVIS. The only known children of JOHN POND and his wife
JUDITH are JOHN and THOMAS.
The above named JOHN POND may have been the same one whose
transportation was paid by ROBERT LAWRENCE, but is seems doubtful and
proof is lacking; the latter obtained a patent of land in Isle of Wight County
near the mouth of Lawne's Creek 28 September 1643.
On 24 March 1694 JOHN POND, son of JOHN POND, deceased, petitioned
the court to get control of property which was in the hands of OWEN DAVIS,
whom his mother, JUDITH, widow of JOHN POND, had married. JUDITH was
deceased when the petition was filed; and, she had been the Administratrix
of the estate of JOHN POND, her deceased husband. JOHN POND probably
died late in the year 1688, since an inventory and appraisement of his estate
was recorded 25 March 1689 in York County. In the petition of JOHN POND to
the York County Court the following language is found: "Now, ye said
petitioner's brother being left in New England, which if living is aged 24 -----
now supposed to be dead". The foregoing statement strongly suggest that
JOHN POND, his wife JUDITH and son JOHN migrated to Virginia from New
England. One alternative is that the family went to New England on a visit.
The brother was born about 1670. In addition to the foregoing evidence of
probable relationship with the Pond family of New England there is a repetition
of given names of JOHN, DANIEL and SAMUEL.
On 24 August 1698 THOMAS POND entered a plea for property of his
father, which property was "Now in OWEN DAVIS hands".
