Obituary
Iola Elizabeth Harris Goodrich, age 100, of Dendron passed away peacefully in the presence of her family Friday, March 18, 2016.
Born on the family farm on August 8, 1915 in the Spring Hill area of Sussex County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Alley and Lizzie Cofer Harris. Besides her parents, she was predeceased in death by her husband of 56 years, George Willard Goodrich and by her siblings, Robert Oliver Harris and Hazel Harris Davies.
In her youth, Elizabeth was a member of the Waverly Christian Church and was a graduate of Waverly High School. She ventured off to the big city after high school and worked in retail at Miller and Rhodes in downtown Richmond, VA. In 1939, after her marriage to "Willard", she settled into the role of wife and homemaker in Dendron, VA. She was an excellent cook, but cleaning was her passion. She stayed in her home there until she was 94 years old after which she moved in to Riverside Healthy Living Community of Smithfield.
She was a loving mother to her "three Goodrich girls" and continued in that same role with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was a faithful member of the Dendron United Methodist Church and the oldest living member there when it was closed in 2015. Church was not an option in the Goodrich household. Elizabeth was always there with her family by her side. She was deeply saddened when the church closed and later her name was placed on the role of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, the church attended by two of her daughters.
Survivors include: her children, Betty G. Thompson (Les), Norma G. Roach (Bill), and Joanie G. Berryman (Mac); grandchildren, Sandy Rawlings, Kathy Zevgolis (Rodney), Randee Masters (Bob), Billy Roach, Melissa Berryman (Bryan Chadwick), Steve Berryman (Jordan), and Lisa B. Trombley (David); step-grandchildren, Gail T. McLain and Tracy Thompson (Laurie); ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Riverside Healthy Living Community of Smithfield for the love and compassion shown to their mom over the past six years.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, March 21, 2016 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel. Burial will follow at Wakefield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Oak Grove U.M.C.
