    Notes
    • When Eva was old enough to go to school, she walked 1.5 miles to the Township School. When she graduated from the 7th grade, she went to Freemont, OH., to take the Boswell examination. If she passed this she could attend high school free of charge. This she did. However, she never had the chance to take advantage of the free high school education. Because of her fther's health, they had to move to another climate. So, in December 1908, the family moved to Spring Grove, Virginia, in Surry County.
      See marriage notes.

Capton was 10 years older than Eva, so, in a short while he wanted to get married. She said "I can't live in that old house on the farm". He built what was later to be a chicken coop. They moved into the one room house that Capton had built for her. ( the present home was built by Christmas that year)

They had many good times at square dances, picnics, taking part in plays, big dinners, etc., both before and after their children were born. [1, 2]

    • She took part in a play at the Spring Grove Methodist Church put on by the young people to raise money for repairs on the church. Capton Edmund Barnes of Cabin Point was asked to be in the play too. That is how Eva and Capton met and from then on she was his girl.

They were married June 5, 1910 in Waverly, Virginia. Eva's father had to get the marriage license as she was not old enough. She Capton, and Capton's sister Ethel Mae Barnes (Shiffer), and a friend all rode in buggies to Waverly, where they were married. The preacher's wife would not let Eva sit down after the ceremony. She said if she didn't sit right away after the ceremony that she would live a long life. "She didn't sit".

Eva's mother had a wedding dinner doe both familes when they returned from Waverly. [2]
