The following biographical note shared by Dick Barnes:
EVA ISABEL HAFF BARNES
Eva Isabel Haff was born in Townsend Township, Sandusky County, Clyd e, Ohio on April 19, 1894 to Ortive Haff and Imogene Maude Stevenson Haff. Eva had a brother, Reuben B. Haff, born August 12, 1896.
When Eva was old enough to go to school, she walked 1 1/2 miles to the Township school. When she graduated from the seventh grade, she went to Freemont, Ohio to take the Boxwell examination. If she passed this examination, she could attend high school free of charge. This she did. However, she never had the chance to take advantage of the free high school eucation. Because of her father's health, they had to move to another climate. So, in December 1908, the family moved to Spring Grove, Virginia in Surry County.
They attended the Spring Grove Methodist Church. She took part in a play that the young people put on to raise money for repairs on the Church. Captain Edmund Barnes of Cabin Point, Virginia, was asked to be in the play too. That is how Eva and Capton met and from then on she was his girl.
Capton was ten years older than Eva so, in a short while he wanted to get married. She said, "I can't live in that old house on the farm ." So, he built what was later to be a chicken house.
They were married on June 5, 1910 in Waverly, Virginia. Eva's father had to get the license as she was not old enough. She, Capton, and Capton's sister, Ethel Mae Barnes (Shiffer), and a friend all rode in buggies to Waverly where they were married. The preacher's wife would not let Eva sit down after the ceremony. She said that if she didn't sit right away after the ceremony that she would live a long life. "She didn't sit."
Eva's mother had a wedding dinner for both families when they returned from Waverly.
They moved into the one room house that Capton had built for her. (The present home was built by Christmas of that same year.)
They had many good times at square dances, picnics, taking part in plays, big dinners, etc. both before and after their children were born. They had four children:
HAZEL MARIE BARNES (FISHER) September 19, 1912
LEONARD CLAIBORN BARNES November 30, 1913
ORTIVE ERVIN BARNES February 14, 1915
REUBEN ARTHUR BARNES November 8, 1917
Eva had eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
