      The main reference for this paper is Peggy A. Grubbs' "The
      Carpers of Roane County." Peggy's book is a treasure trove of
      data on the Carpers and collateral families.
      1.NICHOLAS CARPER
      Nicholas Carper was born in Germany in 1710 and arrived in
      Philadelphia, PA August 11, 1732. Like many other immigrants,
      Nicholas Carpers correct name is in doubt. In three documents
      dealing with his arrival in Philadelphia, his name is variously
      spelled Nicholas Corber, Niklas Korper and Niklas Kerper. His
      signature appears on two documents, but is in German and can be
      interpreted to fit many spellings.
      There is no mention of a wife or family in any of the
      documents. Jacob Carper, a son of Nicholas, is believed to have
      been born in Germany. He may have been omitted from the various
      lists because of his age or he may have come to America at a
      later date.
      Nicholas is believed to have lived in PA until about 1750,
      when he moved to MD. Three land deeds in Berks County PA detail
      the purchase and later resale of land in that county by a
      Nicholas Carper between the years 1740 and 1748. This indicates
      that Nicholas lived there from 1140 to 1748 before moving
      somewhere. But here was more than one Nicholas Carper in PA in
      that period.

      Jacob Carper a son of Nicholas Carper was probably born in
      Germany about 1730 and came to America with his father in 1732.
      He lived in Maryland.

      Nicholas Carper, a son of Jacob Carper, was born about 1749
      and died in Botetourt County VA in 1813. He married Elizabeth
      Harvey. The family moved from western MD to Botetourt County VA
      about 1778 and Nicholas is first mentioned in Court records in
      that county on May 14, 1779. On October 31, 1782, Nicholas was
      recruited to serve as a member of the Botetourt County VA
      militia "for three years or until the end of the war."
      Nichols is listed on a monument to Revolutionary War veterans
      at the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church at Fincastle, VA.

      Margaret Carper, a daughter of Jacob Carper, was born in MD
      December 27, 1751 and died in Giles County VA after 1824. She
      married Benjamin Peck in MD in 1769. Benjamin, a son of Jacob
      and Lydia (Borden) Peck, was born in MD in 1744 and died in Giles
      County VA June 1, 1824.
      They moved from Sharpsburg MD to Berkeley County VA and then
      to Botetourt County Va in 1778. By 1824, they were living in
      Giles County VA.

      Calahan C. Carper, a son of Nicholas and Sarah (Nida) Carper,
      was born in Giles County VA December 28, 1844 and died in Roane
      County WV December 16, 1896. Calahan enlisted in Co B 9th W.Va.
      Volunteer Infantry December 2, 1861. He was wounded and
      captured at the Battle of Cloyds mountain May 9, 1864. He was
      sent to the Confederate prison at Andersonville, GA. He was
      paroled from Andersonville in December 6, 1864 and reported to
      Camp parole, MD December 15, 1864.
      Robert Carper, a nephew of Calahan described his condition
      thusly: "Grandmaw and grandpaw went to Maryland by horse and
      buggy to pick up Uncle Cal at the Army hospital. He was so
      poorly that Grandmaw had to carry him to the buggy in her arms."
      John Ransom describe the conditions at Andersonville during
      the latter months of 1864. "In September, one in every three
      died. In October one in every two died. In November one in
      every three died."
      Calahan married Rachel Sargent in Roane County March 29,
      1869. Rachel, a daughter of Wenden and Ginatra Sargent, was born
      in Roane County September 16, 1850 and died there December 21,
      1906.
