after his 10th year. He went to Surry High School for his 11th (Senior) year and graduated
High School in 1946. During his school years, he worked as a janitor at the Dendron School
and at the Surry School during his Senior year. After graduation, he worked as a mechanic
for Surry Implement Co.
Shirley was inducted into the U. S. Army on January 25, 1951. His basic training with
the 45th (Thunderbird Division) was at Camp Polk, Lousiana. In June, 1951 he had 10 days
delayed route to report to Fort Hood, Texas. He became engaged to Doris Jean Goodrich while
at home part of that 10 days. At Fort Hood, he was assigned to the 57th Medium Tank Battalion,
2nd Armored Division and was transferred to Camp Y79 near Mannheim, Germany. Most of the troops
he trained with at Camp Polk and Fort Hood were transferred to Korea during the fighting there.
He was discharged from the Army on January 16, 1953 and married Jean on January 28, 1953.
