- SECOND GENERATION
k 2 JOHN JOHNSON, son of (1), was born at Jamestown in 1623. On February 25, 1638 John Johnson and Edward Travis were granted 900 acres in Surry County (then part of James City County) three miles from the mouth of Upper Chippokes Creek and upon its east bank." Since the Travis family is well documented as having been one of the largest landowners in the Virginia colony, we can conclude that the Johnsons who held joint patents with them were persons of.means and respect. John's sister Ann married Edward Travis and inherited part of her father's land. On July 5, 1653 John Johnson sold some of the land from his 1638 patent to Bob Roberts. It appears that the family lands on Jamestown Island were maintained, as several references are made in James City County deed books to property additions and transfers by John Johnson in 1654 and 1662. As a landowner, he was frequently called as a juror per early court records. We are unable to find a record of his will and therefore are uncertain of his date of death.
