In 1850 Census, listed as a stonecutter. In 1860 and 1870 censuses, listed as a farmer.
Confederate Captain in The Civil War
J.M.R. Sprinkle was a Captain for the Confederacy -- Company: Sprinkle's Company, Regiment: Burk's Virginia Local Defense. One Muster Roll card states Catawba County, Burk's Reg't, Botetourt Home Guards.
Redford or Redfern? Other sources show his name as John Morgan Randoplh Sprinkle and John Morgan Redfern Sprinkle. Margaret L. Sprinkle Sopp believes Redfern is the most likely because his mother's maiden name is Redfern. Records from Virginia Crawford Hawley show his name as John Morgan Redford Sprinkle.
Place of Birth According to records from Virgie Hawley (J.M.R. Sprinkle's great-granddaughter and my grandmother), John Sprinkle's place of birth was unknown. Virgie stated that he came to Rockingham County at the age of 17 from Ohio. However, Margaret L. Sprinkle Sopp, who has researched the Sprinkle family, states "I'm confused as to why John would have stated he was from Ohio. All census records show a Virginia birth. Additionally, he was born in 1811 and his father was living in Rockingham County at the time of the 1810, 1820 & 1830 censuses. That said, I've always found the following excerpt from a letter written by Charles T. Burton to Robert Wayne Helton dated 12/10/1966 interesting: 'Col. John Morgan Redford Sprinkle 1811-1889 married 9-8-1834 to Mary Jane Barley 1819-1898. When he was 17, he came to Rockingham County, Virginia. It was understood he was an orphan, but no one said who his parents had been. There were lots of other Sprinkles in the county who must have been relatives. He soon made lots of friends and in 1857 he was elected to the House of Delegates from his adopted county. In the same year, he bought his first land in Botetourt County and soon moved onto it.'" Margaret further states, "Odd, huh? We do know he was very young when his mother, Nancy, died and it's been suggested that Peter didn't have much to do with his children by Nancy once he married again. It's quite possible that's what the orphan reference means." I noticed on your website that you have J.M.R. Sprinkle's place of birth as Rockingham County, Virginia. Do you have a source for that information? Would love to find something that verifies his place of birth. If you find out anything else about him, please let me know! Peter remained in Shenandoah County with his second wife and three unmarried daughters. This was his final home. As reported to the census taker, Peter Sprinkel's age and birthplace match the birth records of York County, providing a vital link of evidence in a complicated migration chain. Peter had very few land dealings in Rockingham County and none in Shenandoah despite his 35 years there. In 1835, Peter had sold his parcel of land in Harrisonburg to his brother William shortly before William's death, despite the fact that three sons were married and raising families in Rockingham County. It is unknown how Claiborne and Evelyn met. Claiborne graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond (same as his son). He was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. They first lived in the apartments on Cleveland Street in Richmond when he got out of the service. They lived with his father and mother there. He was in the US Navy and stationed in San Diego, California and Evelyn went out there twice to see him. After the divorce, Claiborne lived at 901 Kent Rd, Richmond, VA., with his mother.

He was still living there when he died at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond (age 61).

The graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Henrico County, 4000 Pilot's Ln., Virginia at 3:30 PM and officiated by Rev. Hugh Kirby and Rev. George Sadler. Bennett Funeral Home (Bennett Funeral Home - 3215 Cutshaw Ave, Richmond ) handled the funeral.

Served in the US Air Force from 12/66 to 9/72 with the Combat Control Team with duty in Central & South America. Stationed at Sewart AFB, TN, Little Rock AFB, AK and last duty station at Dover AFB, DE. He made over 500+ parachute drops in the military, as Combat Control was part of Air Force Special Tactics. He was also a scuba diver and loved diving. He continued to dive after the military, mostly in the Chesapeake Bay. Married Leslie Clayton Ernst at Dover and was divorced a few years later. Active in search and rescue work in the 1970's, 80's and 90's with the CAP and other SAR organizations. He was involved with the successful recovery, working with the air scent dog team, of Joann Chynnis that was abducted and left for dead. Volunteer Rescue Squad Member at Manchester Rescue Squad and Bensley Bermuda as an EMT, EMT-D and EMT-Wilderness. Member Fraternal Order of Demolay and served as Master Councilor with the John Moncure Chapter in Richmond while in high school (Thomas Jefferson H.S.). Jon Hill and as a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol (United States Air Force Auxiliary) as Communications Officer both at the Squadron Level and Group and Wing levels. He was also Squadron Commander of the Southside Squadron. He is curently serving as the family historian and genealogist. Employed first by the City of Richmond as a Police-Fire-EMS dispatcher for 18 years, then as a computer Systems Developer in the city IT department, specializing in Police and Fire mobile data systems. Retired from Richmond City in Apr 2004 and went to work for VCU Police as Special Projects Coordinator. Gene is an avid fisherman and loves the water and hunting. Gene has worked with computers since the 1970's.

Robert Thurston Barrett
DOVER - Robert "Bob" Thurston Barrett passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, in the home of his son, Tyler Barrett. He had been residing with Tyler for the past several months while he battled cancer. Bob was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Wilmington, to the late Sarah Moore and Leroy Barrett. He graduated from Metuchen High School, Metuchen, N.J., in 1956. Bob took the New Jersey Entrance Exam and scored the highest ever on the Algebra section. That accomplishment earned him a full scholarship to Princeton University . Bob graduated from Princeton in 1960 and from Columbia Law School in 1964. He secured the first full time position as a law clerk for the Superior Court of New Castle County, Delaware. He later worked as a lawyer in Dover, DE from his office on The Green. Throughout Bob's legal career he always looked for ways to help others and often did pro bono work. As a young man, Bob was president of the Young Democrats and served as an aide to Governor Charles Terry, Jr. Later when retired from law, Bob worked as comptroller of Salty Sam's in New Castle, DE. Bob taught Sunday School at Wesley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading, traveling, fine dining, writing and playing bridge. He loved spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Lucretia Smoot of Dover, DE. He is survived by his great-aunt, Dora Alexander of Whitehouse Station, NJ; two half- brothers, Bill Barrett of Winston-Salem, NC, Jim Barrett of Knoxville, TN; a half-sister, Barbara Barrett of NJ; his daughter Lisbeth Baker of Millsboro, DE and her husband, Randy, his son Tyler Barrett of Mayville, NY, his youngest son Andrew Barrett of Cambridge, MN and his wife, Wendy Waszut-Barrett; grandchildren, Sara Baker, Isabelle Rose and Aaron Barrett, Zachariah McCann, David and Aaron Schneider. A Celebration of his Life will be held Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. Bradford Street, Dover. A reception will follow after his service in the church fellowship hall. Friends and family are all welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society , 92 Read's Way STE 205, New Castle, Delaware 19720 or the Kent County Head Start Program 129 S.
