Abt 1725 - 1795 (~ 70 years)
Generation: 1
1. | ELLIS Wright, I was born about 1725; died in 1795. Notes:
The children listed as William Ellis, I were obtained from The Ellis LineFrom Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L. McCrary and she states hersource as the Albemarle Parish Register records. This William Ellis became the guardian of Elizabeth Wright, daughter ofEdward Wright. Edward Wright was William I wife's Elizabeth's brother. From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L.McCrary, pages 160-61: Concerning Methodism: "It is obvious from the Albemarle Parish Register that William andElizabeth were active members of Albemarle Parish (Established Church) aslate as 1772. They became actively associated with the Methodistmovement, the beginning of which in Southside Virginia dates from thecoming of the first Methodist preachers into that area in the early1770's. As early as 9 Dec. 1775, as recorded in his Journal, BishopAsbury was at 'Mr. Ellis's' in Sussex Co.; this 'Mr. Ellis' no doubt wasWilliam Ellis I. The visit is an indication that William and Elizabethwere by that time well recognized as members of the Methodist Society. They may have continued as members of the Established Church for someyears, as practically all of those belonging to the Society did, manyuntil the formal establishment of the 'Methodist Episcopal Church inAmerica' in 1784. 'Ellis Preaching House' (probably the seventh meeting house of theMethodists in Virginia, as stated by John Lednum in his 'History of theRise of Methodism in America, ') was on the land of William Ellis I, andmay have been in existence at the time of the Bishop's first visit. Theyear it was built is not of record, but it is evident that it have beenin use for some time when in May, 1783 (Deed Bk. F, p. 182), WilliamEllis made formal deed for the land on which it stood (1 acre, 26 poles)to a group of Trustees representing the Methodist Society. The trusteeswere William Nicholson, Caleb Ellis, Emanuel James, Stephen Andrews,David Rogers, Stephen Pepper, Isaac Ellis, Benjamin Ellis and WilliamEllis, Jr. The Caleb Ellis listed as one of the trustees was Caleb II, son of CalebI of Surry; Isaac Ellis was the son of Richard, brother of Caleb II;Benjamin Ellis and William Ellis, Jr., were sons of the William who gavethe land. the Stephen Andrews probably was Stephen (b. 1743), son ofJohn and Sarah (Ellis) Andrews (Sarah, a sister of the William who gavethe land). The deed was emphatic in restricting the property to the use of the'Society called Methodists' and the preaching of the doctrines of johnWesley." Concerning slaves: "By deed of 19 Dec. 1787, (Deed Bk. G, p. 124), William Ellis emancipatedhis slaves: Thomas, aged 26 years.... names 11 with ages.... heincluded the provision that as several of the slaves were 'yet in theirnonage it is my request and desire to have the care and instruction ofthem till they arrive at full age..." Concerning his will: "His will, made 24 Mar. 1795, pr. 4 June 1795 (Will Bk. E, p. 345), leftthe home plantation to his wife, Elizabeth, for her widowhood, and to hisson, Wright, at her marriage or death; and to his son, Benjamin, land andplantation 'where he now lives... 150 acres.' Bequests were made to thefollowing children, also: sons, William and John, and daughters, SusannaKinnebrough, Mary Evans, Catherine Ellis and Sally Hargrove." From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L.McCrary, page page 133: "His will [Benjamin Ellis I] made 3 Dec. 1758,pr. 19 Jan. 1759 (Sussex Will Bk. A, p. 112), leaves to his "Dear andLoving Wife," (name not given), the plantation for her natural life, andnames his sons: William, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Benjamin and Joseph (seeSummary on each), and daughters, Mary Proctor, Priscilla Blow, SarahAndrews, Susanna Andrews and Elizabeth Moreing."

Notes:
William Ellis and Martha Ellis were second cousins, once removed.
From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L.McCrary, page 163: "The will of William Ellis, Jr., dated 3 Jan. 1808,pr. 4 Feb. 1808 (Will Bk. G, p. 116), left his plantation (446 acres) tohis wife, Patty, for her lifetime or widowhood, and for the support oftheir children (not listed by name). Instructions were given for use orhire of his nine negroes (listed by name). His Brother, Wright Ellis, named as Excr., and guardian of 'all my children.' Following the deathof Wright Ellis (c. 1821), John Velvin became the guardian of the children, Thomas and Patsey Ellis. An account of Patsey Ellis, orphan ofWilliam Ellis, dec'd, shown on p. 71, Guardian Accounts, 1821-1834,mentions her brothers, James and Archer. The names of the children ofWilliam and Martha Ellis are established from deed of 30 Mar. 1829(Sussex Deed Bk. P)." Also from above source: "The will implies that all of the children wereunder age in 1808, and it is supposed none was born before 1788. Censusrecords indicating approximate years of birth have been found for allexcept Caleb, probably the eldest and possibly born in 1788."

Thank you for all the information. I found the answer to my question about Bolling Ellis. I found Bolling Ellis's parents in the research my Aunt Dorthea Harrison Nottingham had done. I am pretty sure you and Gene copied this information when we got together a little over a year ago. Bolling Ellis was the son of William Ellis, Jr. Of Sussex. Bolling Ellis first married Elizabeth Ann Velvin of Surry on December 30, 1819. Bolling Ellis second marriage was to Henrietta W. Holleman on 9 December 1852. Bolling Ellis will was probated 9/24/1872. In it he left property to his wife then Henrietta for her lifetime, son James Bolling Ellis after Henrietta's death, Ann R. Harrison was bequeathed land formerly belonging to Benjamin Ellis and to son John T. Ellis. Mill and Mill seat also bequeathed to John T. Does it make sense that the property belonged to the Velvin's before the Ellis's?
Christening:

3. | ELLIS Wright, Sr. (1.Wright1) was born on 8 Sep 1772 in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, VA; died on 13 Dec 1819 in Sussex County, VA. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes:
From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie Lm, page 169: Wright Ellis, Sr. was named in the will of his father, William to receive the home place, 200 acres on the death or remarriage of his mother, Elizabeth Wright Ellis. "The property left to Wright, with a 'mansion house' which apparently was built by Wright, remained in the hands of descendants, a part of it until the 1880's" From above source also, page 170, Ms. McCrary states that Wright Ellis served as Deputy Clerk of Sussex County for two or more years and that Ellis served a justice of the County Court in 1802. Ms. McCrary quotes from the Asbury Journal (Bishop Francis Asbury)stating that on Saturday, February 3, 1810, the Bishop had come to William Birdsong's in Suffolk and his entry for February 4th was: "I preached at my host's and at Wright Ellis's. Here were great times thirty years ago; many are fallen asleep, and the children forget God." Ms. McCrary states that Wright died in circa 1819 leaving no will.

from Brenda Duckwall:
The Harrison Home is at 3840 Otterdam Road in Surry County.
The land where the home is located and about 1000 acres belonged to our Ellis ancestors from the early 1600's. The land and original home was given by Bolling Ellis to his daughter and our ancestor Ann Rebecca Ellis who married Joshua Simmons Harrison. It was passed down or purchased by sons and daughters: William Franklin Harrison, Joshua James Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Jr., and presently to Julian R. Harrison III and his sister, Robin Harrison Mitchell.
This is from the Surry County Historical Society:
The Harrison Farm
located at 3840 Otterdam Road
Surry County, Virginia
"The following information has been researched by Julian R. Harrison, Jr.
The Harrison Farm was once owned by Bolling Ellis. The Ellises were in Surry County as early as 1667. The original farm consisted of 760 +/- acres. Ann Rebecca Ellis married Joshua Simmons Harrison April 1, 1848 in Surry, Virginia. She inherited the farm from her father, Bolling Ellis.
Joshua James Harrison inherited his part of the farm from his father, William Franklin Harrison, in 1907, and bought the remaining shares from other family members….."
I don't know where Julian received the information whether it was Court records, Wills, or passed down information. He seemed to check things carefully.
I may have given you a copy of this information with a picture of the house and farm.
Court Records or a Will might firm up the proof….

ELLIS PREACHING HOUSE According to Carsley United Methodist Church Records:
The Ellis Preaching House was the seventh Methodist meeting house in Virginia.
Frances Asbury was one of eight official missionaries sent to America by John Wesley between 1769 and 1775. Asbury came to Virginia in 1775.
Asbury visited the William Ellis family for the first time on August 20, 1775.
The Methodist Conference met at the Ellis Preaching House on April 27, 1782.
The exact date the Ellis Preaching House was constructed is uncertain. It was built no later than 1781, since Asbury preached there January 15, 1782. A date earlier than 1781 is suggested by the 1794 Will of William Nicholson, which provided for repairs in the preaching house. The deed for the property was recorded at Sussex Court House on May 15, 1783. Trustees named in the deed (William Nicholson, Caleb Ellis, Emanuel James, Stephen Andrews, Daniel Rogers, Stephen Pepper, Issac Ellis, Benjamin Ellis, and William Ellis, Jr.). They were neighbors. They and their children were registered in the Parish Registrar of the established church (Albemarle Parish). The trustees were plantation owners, many of whom freed their slaves as requested by John Wesley.
At William Ellis' death in 1795, he left his property to his wife Elizabeth Wright Ellis and then to their son Wright Ellis after her death. Wright Ellis was Deputy Clerk of Sussex County. At Wright Ellis' death, he did not have a Will but settlement in court gave the partial of land where the Ellis Preaching House was located to his daughter, Mary W. Ellis. It is not known when the Ellis Preaching House ceased to exist.
Nearby churches attribute their beginnings to the Ellis Preaching House: Carsley , Rocky Hock, Owen's Grove, Ellis Chapel, Oak Grove, and Coker's Well Methodist Churches.

Received from Brenda Duckwall, 1/2011:
Joshua had a son, William Franklin Harrison, who had a daughter, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison, that had a
son, David Harrison Johnson, who is my father.
One of my New Year goals is to try to link Joshua with the President Harrison line. I think that he may have
been a cousin of some sort. I think that they were all well off financially since they are related to the Booths,
sent William Franklin Harrison's wife, Sarah E. Baird, to France to receive treatments for T.B. Sarah died
January 22, 1888 of T.B. leaving my grandmother who was only 16 months old. I have sympathy for William
loosing his wife, having young children to take care of, and loosing his father when he was a teenager. I guess he was too preoccupied to keep family records but I would like to go back and find out what his grandparents (Joshua's parents) names were and possibly link our family to the Presidents.

William Franklin Harrison was just 34 almost 35 when his wife died. He had 6 young children and his widowed mother in his house hold. He may have had a sister in the household. His sister and mother did help him with the children. They were all recovering from the Civil War. If his wife's grave is unmarked, it would be understandable that he did not purchase a stone.

From: Brenda Johnson Duckwall:
These are stones at Waverly Cemetery in Waverly, Virginia for Joshua James Harrison ("Nellie" Adelaide Cornelia Harrison's brother who had just
had a birthday and turned 8 when his mother died). His daughter, Helen, was just one years old when she died.
William Franklin Harrison and Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison had 6 children: Lottie, Myrtie, Joshua, Herbert, Clarah, and my grandmother, Nellie (long e sound).
When William Franklin Harrison's wife died he moved closer to his mother, Ann Rebecca Ellis Harrison. His mother and sisters helped to take care of the children.
William's oldest child was Lottie Baird Harrison (Wanda Goodrich Temple's grandmother). Lottie had just turned 12 years old when her mother
(Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison) died on her birthday, January 22.
JUST FOUND IN MY NOTES THAT SARAH ELLIS BAIRD HARRISON IS BURIED IN PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, NEAR NEWVILLE. So maybe we were on the
trail the other day when we were looking for the Kirkham Cemetery.
Kirkham Cemetery Location in the Report: 1.2 miles north of Disputanta, Virginia, on Route #618; thence .8 mile northwest on Route #629; thence .1 mile south
of Route #629. Prince George County, Virginia.
Kirkham Cemetery is located about fifty yards east of the residence, in the corner of an open field (1937). The plot is about sixty feet square, fenced in and neatly
kept (as of 1937). There is a lone cedar tree and one tombstone marking two graves.
Graves include: Martha Stainback Kirkham, William Kirkham, Joshua Simmons, 2 young daughters, Ann Simmons Harrison, and her husband, William Thomas Harrison,
James William Harrison, Martha Simmons Stainback and her husband, Peter Stainback, their young son, and possibly more.
I plan to volunteer to help inventory cemeteries in Prince George so maybe we will eventually come across Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison's grave. I'm also looking for William
Franklin Harrison's father's grave. His father was Joshua Simmons Harrison. If Joshua Simmons Harrisons mother was a Simmons, it would make sense for his son
William to bury his wife with his grandmother's family.
William married BAIRD Sarah Ellis on 9 Feb 1875. Sarah (daughter of BAIRD Alexander Peter, Jr. and BOOTH Rebecca Ann) was born on 27 Jan 1854 in Dendron, Surry, Virginia, United States; died on 22 Jan 1888 in Mayenne Pays de Loire, France; was buried in Surry County, VA (Lois Goodrich Cemetary on Rt 612). My husband and I are going to France in May (upper Loire and Pays De La Mayenne will be visited.)It was in this area where she was treated. I am trying to locate the hospital where she died if the building still exists. Do you know anyone who might have information on name of place or exact location? From your Booth Family inf., I understand she was brought back from France and buried in Va.,correct? I would also like to compliment you on your excellent Booth Family website.
