In obedience to a decree directed to us by your honorable body at December Term 1847, we proceeded to the fulfillment of its requirements; finding that neither the land nor slaves of ARCHIBALD POND deceased could be equally divided among his children. We advertised the same for sale (after allotting to the widow Mrs. MARY ANN POND one third part of each) giving twenty days notice. The sale took place at Birdsong's Mill on the 20th of last month January. We thought it best to require 5 per cent to defer expenses attending the sale and done so. The gross amount for which the land and Negroes sold was twenty four hundred and fourteen 50/100 dollars. Expenses amounted to sixteen 29/100 dollars. Commissions on $300.00 at 5 per cent and on $2114.50 at 2 per cent making $57.29, paid for writing two Deeds and crying the said property $3.00, making in all $60.29, leaving cash in hand $60.43 which we paid to WILLIAM B. HARVELL Guardian of the infants of said ARCHIBALD POND. The balance due on Bonds at 12 months credit we have paid over to said WILLIAM B. HARVELL Guardian say $2146.64 and to Mrs. MARY ANN POND widow of said ARCHIBALD POND $147.14 and taken the receipts for same. In this we have departed from the decree by the advice of the Counsel (R. R. COLLIER Esq.) employed in the case and paid over to the widow, one fourth part both of the land and Negroes to which ALBERT POND deceased would have been entitled if he had lived. The decree directed to pay said widow MARY ANN POND one fourth part of the value of the slaves only. If this should not meet the approbation of your worships, it can be easily altered so as to conform to your order strictly. All which is respectfully submitted

Notes:
Recv'd from Gayle Lanier:
Junious, the second child of twelve children, was born Nov 11, 1849 in Little Surry to Albert D. Goodrich and Mary Jane Pond Goodrich. His father was in the War Between the States and tradition has passed down that when Albert came home from the War, his own children did not recognize him as he walked up the lane to their home.
Junious never married. He lived in the little one room house in the yard at Uncle Benny's (Benjamin Joseph Goodrich) house. Benny was the father of Ernest Whitmore Goodrich which explains how Ernest had the picture of Junious on horseback. Ernest grew up with Junius living on the farm and being a part of his very early life. (The farm is now the home of Wayne and Kim Britt Steele.) Junious died March 7, 1920 on Uncle Benny's farm in Little Surry and is buried at Rocky Hock Methodist Church in Surry County, Va.
Junious Dudley Goodrich was a brother of Benjamin Hawkins Goodrich.
Benjamin Hawkins Goodrich was the father of my grandmother, Dolly Ann Goodrich.
Dolly Ann Goodrich Brittle was the mother of my mother, Helen Brittle Boykin so that makes Junious my great great uncle.

Notes:
Did you know?
Mr. George W. Goodrich (1882-1949), grandfather of Norma Goodrich Roach, delivered bottled milk to residents of Dendron. The barn in which he housed his cows is still standing. While Mr. Goodrich milked the cows, his wife Cornelia Neal Whitmore Goodrich (1883-1964), washed and sterilized the bottles. After the milk was strained through cheesecloth, it was bottled and capped with cardboard caps. Then Mr. Goodrich would drive his small one-seated vehicle and his daughter Frances would deliver the bottles of milk to the residents. A quart sold for ten cents and a pint for five cents. One customer wanted only a half pint but refused to pay three cents because it was more than half the cost of a pint!
Another service offered by Mr. Goodrich: He raked leaves in the yards of people in town free of charge. He used the leaves for bedding in the stalls for his cows.
Dorothy Joyner Hobbs
My grandfather, George Washington Goodrich (1882-1949), lived in Dendron. He kept 4 or 5 cows at a time and sold and delivered milk house-to--house in Dendron. He used a mule and buggy to deliver the milk. He let children in the community ride with him and they took the milk bottles to the doorsteps. The kids always liked to deliver to Mr. Ernest Rogers' home because he would come out and give them "silvertops" (chocolate kisses). The children also liked to deliver to Mrs. Bunk Hart [Ettie Belle Derring, 1873-1957] because she would give them hot rolls. No one wanted to deliver to Mr. Dickerson because he had turkeys and bad dogs that would chase you.

Good afternoon, Odie Albert Goodrich was actually Albert H. known as Odie Goodrich. His sister known her entire life as Mamie was legally named Mary Marina Goodrich. Their father was a severe alcoholic when ever he managed to get to the court house there was no telling what he told them.
Thank you for your reply. First if you look at his SS death record, WWI & WWII cards he has given 3 different birth dates. Uncle Odie wasn't quite all there and basically lived in the swamps.

Benny was the father of Ernest Whitmore Goodrich which explains how Ernest had the picture of Junious on horseback. Ernest grew up with Junius living on the farm and being a part of his very early life. (The farm is now the home of Wayne and Kim Britt Steele.)
The address of the farm now owned by Wayne and Kim Steele is 1888 Rocky Hock Road, Wakefield, VA 23888. As you leave Albert Goodrich's grave, it may be 1.5 miles on the right as you are heading toward Rocky Hock Church on Rocky Hock Road. They have done a nice job of remodeling the old farm house. If you look over on your right, you can see the 2 story white frame house.

Edwin Gurney Goodrich Plantation Peanut Company:
My father was Cephus Edwin (Peter) Goodrich (1924-1999). son of Cephus Gurney Goodrich (1893-1955). My wife Tammy and I own and operate Plantation Peanut Company in Wakefield. We operate out of the same building in Wakefield previously owned by my father and his father. The back part of this building was my grandfather's sheet metal shop. It was in conjunction with his sheet metal shop that my grandfather invented the Goodrich Puanut Digger. In addition, he made the weather vane that was atop the Suny Lumher Company. Presently the weather vane is the property of our family and is on loan to the Dendron Historical Society.
Another interesting connection between my family and the Suny Lumber company was our ancestral family home. My grandfather dismantle one of the "company houses" in Dendron, moved it to Wakefield. and reconstructed it on Church Street. It was a white weatherboard two-story home located adjacent to Tidewater Academy. This is where he and his wife. Leda Whitmore Goodrich (1893-1974), raised a family of two boys and two girls. During the past several years, the Academy purchased the home and had it torn down in the spring of 2005.

I have fond memories of my mother, Helen Brittle Boykin (1923-2000), playing the piano while my father Charles C. Boykin Sr. (1915-2004) and all 6 of their children gathered around the old upright to sing. We used to participate in "hymn sings" in Dendron. My mother made red corduroy jumpers with white blouses for the five girls and a red pair ofcorduroy bibbed shorts with a white shirt for my brother. I particularly remember the excitement if the Rollings Family was going to sing. They sang in such perfect harmony!

It was in conjunction with his sheet metal shop that my grandfather invented the Goodrich Peanut Digger. In addition, he made the weather vane that was atop the Suny Lumber Company.

345. | GOODRICH Norma Dean (217.George6, 114.George5, 58.John4, 25.Mary3, 5.Hawkins2, 1.Elinor1) Notes:
married a Roach
The following are from the book: "A taste of Dendron"
Norma Goodrich Roach:
I grew up in Dendron and always looked forward to Visiting my "Aunt Estelle." She was sister to Floyd C. Joyner (1903-1982), who lived next door to Guy and Mary Ingram. "Aunt Estelle. " (1900-1982) as she was affectionately called, made clothes for me as well as clothes for my dolls. The thing I remember most about my visits was to make sure I was there when it was time for her to start dinner because I knew she usual ( made homemade biscuits). I liked watching her do this and she always saved me some ofthe dough. (I loved this almost as much as the hot biscuits.) At dinner she would let me have a small amoun tof hot coffee so I could drop apiece of that good old sharp cheese in it to melt, and then I would spoon it onto my biscuit.
My Dendron memories include taffy pulls at Cloteal Slade's(/907-1971) home; scavenger hunts, good times at the Town Hall (too many to memion individually); the school band; the school operettas; and ice cream socials at the Methodist Church. I remember making mud pies and pokeberry juice with my friends Alice, Judy, and Linda, and going to Burt's Store to buy 25 cents worth of pickle and pimiento Loaf (myfilvorite). I especially remember the extra large playhouse built by my father, George Willard Goodrich (1914 - 1995). Regretfully there is not enough space for me to elaborate on all the wonderful memories I have of growing up in Dendron and the many special people I remember and think of often.

Glenice Boykin Coombs
I have fond memories of my mother, Helen Brittle Boykin (1923-2000), playing the piano while my father Charles C. Boykin Sr. (1915-2004) and all 6 of their children gathered around the old upright to sing. We used to participate in "hymn sings" in Dendron. My mother made red corduroy jumpers with white blouses for the five girls and a red pair ofcorduroy bibbed shorts with a white shirt for my brother. I particularly remember the excitement if the Rollings Family was going to sing. They sang in such perfect harmony!

Notes:
Edwin Gurney Goodrich Plantation Peanut Company:
My father was Cephus Edwin (Peter) Goodrich (1924-1999). son of Cephus Gurney Goodrich (1893-1955). My wife Tammy and I own and operate Plantation Peanut Company in Wakefield. We operate out of the same building in Wakefield previously owned by my father and his father. The back part of this building was my grandfather's sheet metal shop. It was in conjunction with his sheet metal shop that my grandfather invented the Goodrich Puanut Digger. In addition, he made the weather vane that was atop the Suny Lumber Company. Presently the weather vane is the property of our family and is on loan to the Dendron Historical Society.
Another interesting connection between my family and the Suny Lumber company was our ancestral family home. My grandfather dismantled one of the "company houses" in Dendron, moved it to Wakefield. and reconstructed it on Church Street.
Edwin married MONAHAN Tamara Anne on 10 Mar 1979. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
