From: Joann Presson [mailto:jopresson@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 12:07 AM To: Gene Harris Subject: from Joann Presson Hello Gene, I am writing this email from another Internet provider that I have because we seem to have too much trouble with the other one. First I want the 'thank you' for sending me the information you had on Mary Presson and husband. I also want to 'thank you' for that wonderful saying and picture that was also in that email. May I have your permission to use that saying? I want to give you a bit of information that I have on Mary Presson. She married William on August 20, 1808 in Surry Co., VA. Now Mary's parents are: Tomer Presson b: July 23, 1750 in Charles Parish, York Co., VA and his wife was Elizabeth. They had nine children, one being Mary. Now Tomer's parents are: Robert Presson and Frances Tomer and Robert's parents are: Nicholas Presson and his second wife, Elizabeth. I also wanted to ask you about Talmadge Booth. I saw that he (not sure if that is male or female) wrote a letter to you, his he related to the Pressons? How? And how are you related? We are planning a trip to Richmond, Virginia on August 27 and will be staying with a cousin who lives on Mapleton Road in Richmond, is that near where you live? We will be meeting, for the first time, Billy Austin and Dianna Presson who also live in Richmond. We will be going to Yorktown to do research and in Surry County to the Courthouse there. Do you have a copy of the Booth Family Bible? Could you scan me a copy? I'd like to find out who Mary's children were. Do you think Yorktown would have any information on Mary and her family? Duplicate certificate issued 9/24/1859 Added 8/10/04: From: Joann Presson Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 12:07 AM To: Gene Harris Subject, from Joann Presson. Hello Gene, I am writing this email from another Internet provider that I have because we seem to have too much trouble with the other one. I wonder if she left a Will? I didn't understand the surity of $500? What does that mean? I'm still learning.....I've only been working on this since Nov of 1999. Thank you for helping me and may God Bless You! Joann

    Nicholas Presson

Notes - Apparently spelled name Pressey until abt 1707 when it appears that the family changed to "Presson". This is borne out by early records - Register of Charles Parish 16909 where Nicholas was listed as the father of a daughter, perhaps Elizabeth whose birth is recorded in Charles County Records, 1648 - 1789 as Elizabeth Pressey, daugheter of Nicholas and Jane Pressey, 1/11/1690.

Jane was his 1st wife, Elizabeth the 2nd The best guess is that Nick was born at least by 1670 and died on 4/4/1732, Charles Parish.

He married Jane by abt 1689 who died11/3/1699 as recorded in the Register although the Register lists the birth of Mary in 1700 and Thomas in 1703 as children of Nicholas and Jane.

He married Elizabeth that same year who lived at least until 1719 when her last child Daniel was born.

Robert Presson Son of Nicholas and Elizabeth, born abt 1714 In Charles Parish (births and deaths for 1714-1715 were lost by the Vestry Clerk) and died in 1757 ; in July of that year, the court speaks of him as deceased although the Register lists his death on 11/1/1757.

He married probably Frances Tomer, daughter of Jon and Mary Tomer. There is no verification of this marriage (records do not exist in this early period. The naming of a son "Tomer" and the continued use of this unusual name in later generations strongly indicate she was a Tomer and the daughter of John Tomer, Jr. and his wife, Mary born 11/1/1713, died 5/13/1757 all in Charles Parish and recorded in the Register.

Tomer Presson Son of Pobert and Frances, born in Charles Parish on 7/23/1750 and died in Surry Co in 1750. He married Elizabeth who was living in 1807 and died by 1809 in Surry.

His son James' will was unwitnessed and when brought for probate, William Cornwell (perhaps his brother-in -law) and Thomas Presson swore to the court that the handwriting was that of Tomer and that he (James) had written and signed the will.

Daughter Mary was living when Tomer made his will in 1801 and is possibly rthe Mary Presson who married William Cornwell in Surry Co. in 1808.

    ...................................................
    NINTH GENERATION
SIDNEY THOMAS JOHNSON, son of David Peyton Johnson (a veteran of the Civil War) and Mahala Elizabeth Rogers, was born on January 20, 1868. As most of Surry County was left bankrupt after the Civil War, his boyhood was a simple one characterized by hard work. Schools were of the one-room variety and pupils ranged in age from seven years to adults. Sidney was a bright boy and quickly mastered his three R'B. At age eighteen he went to work in Waverly at a small general store. He worked for his board and a few dollars a month. Being only six miles from home, he walked the distance when time permitted. On one occasion, he was taken ill and his father had to drive a horse and dump cart the six miles through a snowstorm to get him. The cart was bedded down with hay and a quilt on top to make a bed. More quilts were placed over him and a table oilcloth covered all. He was snug and warm but doubtlessly had a rough ride, all the same.
It was at the small store in Waverly that he gained experience and acquired some knowledge of business management. After four years he had saved enough out of his meager earnings to make a down payment on a farm of his own.
In 1890, at age 22, he bought Marl Spring Farm. The manor house had burned down some time before, leaving but a small cabin; it was here that he lived for two years while he farmed and kept a small neighborhood store. On an adjacent farm lived the Cotton family, with three young girls. Boy met girl and he courted Mary Etta Cotton, marrying her at Union Church on January 27, 1892. He was described in a contemporary account as being a "popular young bachelor" and she was a lovely bride, as evidenced in photographs. A "grand reception" was held at her home after the ceremony.
After the wedding, Sidney and Mary set up housekeeping in the cabin which had been his home for two years. Now, as a team, they worked to make their lives better. He started building a proper house as time and money permitted. The house was built in two sections, the first of which was completed before 1895- The west end of their cabin housed a forge and tools while the house was being built. Their child, Ruth Olga, was born in the tiny cabin, while those which followed were born in the new house. The years went by while they worked and strived to make a good home for themselves and their growing family. Sidney was a very intelligent man and throughout his life showed greater ability than his simple schooling would indicate.
Fortunately, there were no wars during Sidney's young manhood, but he was a volunteer member of the Surry Cavalry. He occasionally rode to Surry on his black horse for drills, sporting a blue uniform with brass trappings and a gleaming saber at his side. He was a man of great energy and knowhow, inventing and making things to simplify the work that had to be done. Mary, dear wife and the mother of his six children, died on May 9i 1909t after an illness of about two years. She was but 37 years of age. Mary is remembered by her children as a loving woman and she was greatly beloved by all who knew her. The family suffered a tragic loss at her death.
Some difficult years followed with Sidney left alone with six children ranging in age from 3 to 16 years. Almost two years later he was married to Ruth ELla Rogers, but 18 years old. Her father was William Thomas Rogers and was related to Sidney's mother, who called him "Cousin Tommy." Sidney and Ruth had three children between 1912 and 1919, and by the time these were growing up the others had married and moved away. The first family car came in 1916 and it made visiting much easier. Sidney Johnson is remembered by Surry County farmers even today as having been able to plow an incredibly straight line with a mule. He, at one point, had a cantankerous steel-wheeled tractor and may have cussed it and ordered it around as did some of the older farmers, who plowed with mules all their lives.

The Johnson farmhouse was the junction of the first telephone line across Surry County and the children remember its switchboard. Sidney had educated himself in legal matters and became a justice of the peace around 1920. For many years he tried cases, both misdemeanors and felonies, in his office in a cabin just west of the house. With some felony cases, the proceedings were briefly suspended in order that he could chase the children away from under the window and prevent them from hearing the gruesome details. He was especially busy with his duties during the prohibition years.
During the 1930 's, the rest of the children finished school at Dendron and moved away. Ruth died in a Richmond hospital on March 31, 1941, only 48 years of age, leaving Sidney alone again at 73. She was greatly loved by all the children and was sadly missed. She was a robust woman and was so kind that it is said that she "would give the butter right off the table to someone in need." Sidney remained at home for a while then, enfeebled, went to Kibler Nursing Home in Claremont where he died on September 4, 1942. His funeral was held at his home and was attended by a large number of his friends and relatives. He was. a longtime member of Carsley Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery at Surry between Mary and Ruth under a grove of young oak trees.

Asa, as a young boy, worked in the Rogers' family stores. One the old store in Spring Grove is no longer standing. The Rogers family owned several stores. One at Carsley and one at Spring Grove were two of them. Ramey, who was related to the Rogers family also owned a store.

Asa Bernard Johnson worked in the Rogers Store on Carsley road (corner of Carsley and Otterdam Roads) across the road from Carsley United Methodist Church when he was young. This store was owned by Asa's mother (Mahala Elizabeth Rogers') family. While working at the store, Asa wrote arithmetic equations and signed his name in several places on the plaster wall of the building behind the store. Rogers Store at the corner of Carsley and Otterdam Roads has been restored and is open as a museum. The signatures of Asa Bernard Johnson can be seen on the wall. At the present, there are numerous store ledgers still existing with many family names and what they purchased. Call the Surry County Historical Society to view the store and its many interesting contents.

A portrait painted by Asa's grand daughter, Brenda Johnson Duckwall, of Asa's father, David Peyton Johnson (husband of Mahala Elizabeth Rogers), hangs in the store.

He later owned a grocery store on Grove Avenue in Petersburg, Virginia.

note: per Doris Jean Goodrich Johnson this store was owned by Nora Rogers when Doris Jean was a child) and was on Rt.10 Rt.40 NW side at Spring Grove in the triangle. 2 story with an attached wharehouse type building.

Asa Bernard Johnson and his wife Nelie were very generous and kind people especially evident during the Depression Years. Asa was not much concerned with making a profit from his store. He frequently let people have food "on credit" whether or not they could pay him back. They also took people into their modest home at 303 Lafayette Avenue in Colonial Heights.

    Notes:

    PAULINE ISABEL JOHNSON
Pauline was born on February 6, 1912, the first child of Sidney and Ruth Rogers Johnson. She was an impish and comical girl whose sweet nature enabled her to get away with her pranks. Two particular incidents which are still remembered involved some stones in the gas tank of the saw engine and little sisters terrified by being chased with a snake on the end of a hoe. She was an industrious girl nonetheless, and always did her chores willingly. As a teenager, she relieved her mother of all of her sewing work and made dresses for her little sisters and for the ladies of Dendron. She graduated from Dendron High School and continued to help around the house until her marriage on August 9, 1941, to Thomas Linwood Gofer, an industrious local farmer. They moved to his farm nearby and had two children, Malcom Thomas (1943) and Alice Ruth (1946). They were successful farmers until Linwood's death in 1977 Pauline underwent major surgery for a brain tumor in 1975 from which she recovered admirably. She still lives on her farm near Dendron and enjoys visits from her daughter, son and his wife, and grandson.

    From the Johnson Book:

    KATHERINE GLADYS JOHNSON
Katherine was born on December 12, 1919, the last child of Sidney and Ruth Johnson. She and her sister, Edna, seemed like twins and sometimes got into trouble pulling up plants and wading in the hog wallow. Katherine was something of a tomboy, always climbing trees and barns, and she was so tough that her father called her a "lightwood knot." She graduated from Dendron High School in 1938 and moved to Newport News to live with her mother's sister, Grace. She worked at Woolworth's and attended business college at night, then took a secretarial job at the shipyard. She met Erwin Adler Fox, Jr., and they were married on August 30,

Their first son, William Adler (1943) was born while Erwin was at sea with the United States Merchant Marine and they had two more sons, Stephen Allen (1946) and Sidney Jay (1950). After the boys were grown, Katherine went back to work as a photo researcher at the Mariner's Museum. Katherine and Erwin now enjoy life at their waterfront home in Seaford which is frequently visited by children and grandchildren.

    Notes:

    ALBERT SIDNEY JOHNSON
Doubtless named for the Civil War hero, Albert was born on December 23, 1899- He stayed on the farm and worked with his father for a while, then came to Newport News and ran a parcel delivery service with his own truck. In 1921, Albert married Carrie Lawson and they had a son named Douglas Lawson (1922), but this marriage did not last. Work with Basic Construction Company in West Virginia led him to court Marjorie Ruth Kincaid who he married on August 11, 1927. They had a son, William Sidney (1934). who lived but three months, and a daughter, Patricia Carrol (1936). For many years, they have lived on Route 10 just east of Surry Court House, and Albert operated a store in front of the house there. Later he closed the store and went back to the construction business. He worked at the Surry Nuclear Plant during its construction and retired in 1975. Albert and Margie still live in their house on Route 10 and enjoy frequent visits from their daughter and her family.

    Notes:

    MYRTLE LEE JOHNSON
Myrtie was born on August 9, 1902. She was always an immaculate, if tiny, little girl and worked hard around the house after her mother died. She had plenty of energy and spirit and eloped at age 17 to marry John Harris Lane, Jr., on June 5, 1920. He was from a good farming family but was young and not yet established. They worked hard and soon had a farm and store at Moorings, between Surry Court House and KLberon. Their children were Irene (1923) and John Harris III (1926). John Harris, Jr., died in 1941 and Myrtie stayed on at Moorings, later moving to Surry Court House where she bought a house and store. She ran this store for many years and became a familiar friend to many in the town of Surry. We remember an especially happy family reunion at Myrtie's house at Easter in 1956. As sweet as she was, Myrtie's life was a hard one and she was sickly in her later years. She died in Suffolk in March of 1971.

Myrtle married LANE John Harris on 5 Jun 1920 (Eloped). John died in 1941. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Hugh was the last child of Sidney and Mary Johnson, born on October 16, 1905. He grew up on the farm helping his father and graduated from Dendron High School. He worked on the farm for a while then moved to Newport News and, at age 21, went to work in the shipyard joiner shop. He was always known for being handy and inventive but an unfortunate accident with a lathe took away some of his fingers and prompted him to change careers. He attended Bliss Electrical School in Washington, D. C. with his savings and later went to work with I.B.M. He traveled around then settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where he wed Edith Lorraine Duncan on October 2, 1936. Hugh and Edith had three children; Duncan Thomas (19320, Mary Etta (1939), and Melanie (1945) who was named for the girl in "Gone With The Wind."
