1717 In 1717, John bought land in Prince George County, Virginia on Chippokes Creek, which
is the dividing line between Surry and Prince George Counties, and moved his family
there.

1720 John Baird was made a Vestryman for the Parish of Martin's Brandon on January 10, 1720.

1725 On August 17, 1725, a patent for 521 acres lying in the counties of Prince George and Surry
was granted to John Baird, which land formerly belonged to Anne Salisbury. This land
adjoined the Chippokes property owned by John.

1726 In 1726, John Baird was made Justice of the Peace for Prince George County, Virginia.

1729 In 1729, John Baird was again made Justice of the Peace for Prince George County, VA.

1738 John Baird died at his Chippokes Creek plantation sometime before September 15, 1738,
evidenced by a law suit filed by sons Rook and Rueben, as executors of his estate, against
a Thomas Cheves, to settle a debt owed the estate.

Relationship=6th great-grandfather of Wendell Harding Wilcox.
The original settlement at Jamestown was established on 13 May 1607 by the Virginia Company under charter from King James I of England. It was 60 miles from the mouth of Chesapeake Bay on the James River. History tells us that of the 7289 people who migrated to Virginia between 1609 and 1624, 6030 of those died of disease, starvation or infections acquired onboard ships in passage. Until the 1660's, only 20% of the arrivals in a given year survived. The majority of the immigrants were indentured servants. They were free persons, but poor, who voluntarily contracted their services for a period of time in return for passage, food, and clothing, with the promise of tools and seed at the end of the indenture. The first representative assembly in the New World convened in a Jamestown church on 30 July 1619. Another crucial event was the arrival of Africans to Jamestown. A Dutch slave trader exchanged his cargo of Africans for food in 1619. The Africans became indentured servants, similar in legal position to the whites. The racial-based slave system did not develop until the 1680's.
On the opposite side of Chippokes Creek in Surry County, VA was "Flying Point," the Rookings Plantation. At least three or four generations of William Rookings lived at Flying Point from 1636. William Rookings I, who patented the land died around 1646, leaving the place to his son, William Rookings II, who played a significant role in Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. He was the leader of the rebels who fortified the house of Arthur Allen, which became known as "Bacon's Castle". Like Bacon, William Rookings II died before he could be executed by the triumphant followers of Governor William Berkley. William's brother-in-law, Nicholas Wyatt, petitioned the Surry County Court to restore "Flying Point" to his children. William Rookings III succeeded in inheriting the property and died about 1715. His son, William Rookings IV lived until about 1750. William III was probably the father of Margaret.
At least one researcher thinks John was the son of John Baird of Glasgow, Scotland. The publication "Name and Family of Baird" says the first of this name to arrive in Virginia were Thomas, Robert and Elizabeth in 1635. It is thought that Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas. If John's arrival in Virginia is documented, it has not been found. He appears as a witness to an indenture from John Tullet of Henrico County, Virginia to Phillip Ludwell of James City County, Virginia dated 7 July 1707. On 6 May 1710, he bought a lot in Jamestown and 20 acres on James City Island. Both deeds were witnessed by the above Phillip Ludwell. A Phillip Ludwell was Secretary of the Colony under Governor William Berkeley. In 1717, John bought land in Prince George County, Virginia on Chippokes Creek, which is the dividing line between Surry and Prince George Counties, and moved his family there.
John was a miller and a millwright, so its probable that he did not arrive as an indentured servant. It's also probable that his father and grandfather were also millers and millwrights and that this talent was passed along to John. Later generations of John Baird's descendants built and operated mills in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas.
John Baird was made a vestryman for the Parish of Martin's Brandon on 10 January 1720, an indication that he was held in high esteem by members of the Parish.
On 17 August 1725, a patent for 521 acres lying in the counties of Prince George and Surry was granted to John Baird, which land formerly belonged to Anne Salisbury who died seized, or without heirs. By law, ownership of land reverted to the Crown. This land adjoined the Chippokes property owned by John.
In 1726 and again in 1729, John Baird was made Justice of the peace for Prince George County.
John Baird died at his Chippokes Creek plantation sometime before 15 September 1738, evidence by a law suit filed by sons Rook and Rueben, as executors of his estate, against a Thomas Cheves, to settle a debt owed the estate (Virginia Colonial Abstracts, by Dr. Benjamin Wiesiger II; Library of Virginia Archives; Deed and Estate Accounts by William Lindsay Hopkins 1705-1755).¹John Baird was born about 1675.¹ He married Margaret Rookings about 1699..¹ John Baird moved to a residence in James City County, Virginia, about 1700. He lived in Jamestown, James City County, Virginia, until 1717 or 1718.¹ He moved to a residence in Chippokes Creek, Prince George County, Virginia, about 1718.¹ On 20 December 1723 John Baird bought 120 acres of land on Otterdam Creek near Cabin Point Mill in Southwark Parish, Surry County, Virginia.¹ He died before 15 September 1738.¹

Aug 7, 1812 Discharge.....Feb 7, 1813 Served in 62nd Va Regiment, Virginia Militia under Capt Allen Temple, Regiment commanded by Col. Lucas and was Honorably discharged at Ft. Norfolk, Va. He served as a private. He received 2 bounty- land warranties for service and subsequently received pension for service at age 76. It is also stated that he disposed of the bounty land (80 acres). He also applied and was granted another (the 2nd ) bounty land warrant (7-4-1841). This shows that at this time (age 56) he was titled a Col. in the Virginia Militia. Joshua Simmons Harrison born about 1823 (post office:
Brandon, Prince George, VA) married Ann Rebecca Ellis. He had one brother, James William
Thomas Harrison and one sister, Susanna who married Mr. Figg.

Joshua was a scout in the Civil War. He was having his horse shod at a blacksmith shop in
Petersburg when he was shot and killed by Northern soldiers. I think he was in the mounted
guard, 4th Congressional District, Virginia.

I don't know his parent's names or if they are linked to the Harrisons of Brandon and Upper Brandon.

Joshua had a son, William Franklin Harrison, who had a daughter, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison, that had a
son, David Harrison Johnson, who is my father.

Your William Thomas Harrison married Ann Simmons.....daughter of Joshua Simmons and Sarah Baird. Ann was the sister of Martha Simmons who married Peter Stainback. Peter Stainback (War of 1812 Vet) was the son of Rev War Veteran Littleberry Stainback Jr and his wife Amelia....possibly Wilkins.

Joshua Simmons was the son of Randolph and Frances Simmons of Prince George Co., Va. Joshua also had a brother named Coleman Simmons. Sarah Baird was the daughter of Thomas Baird.

open field. The plot is about sisty feet square, fenced in and neatly kept. There is
a lone cedar tree and one tombstone marking two graves."

This property was owned by Coleman Simmons in 1826, by inheritance it became the
property of his son, Williamson Simmons. By the will of Williamson Simmons in
1886 it was inherited by his sons, Percy and Bruce Simmons. By the division of
the land between Percy and Bruce Simmons in 1887 this estate was then owned by
Bruce Simmons, who sold it on December 28, 1918 to John Kolar and Wesley P.
Arwood. On January 2, 1919 they sold it to John and Elizabeth Sluka, who on
December 19, 1923 sold it to Rudolph Vejnar, the present owner. [1937]

DESCRIPTION:

This graveyard is a small spot located in an open field, heavily grown up with
cedar trees and honeysuckle. There are no markers to designate the grave spots.

Brandon, Prince George, VA) married Ann Rebecca Ellis. He had one brother, James William
Thomas Harrison and one sister, Susanna who married Mr. Figg.

Joshua was a scout in the Civil War. He was having his horse shod at a blacksmith shop in
Petersburg when he was shot and killed by Northern soldiers. I think he was in the mounted
guard, 4th Congressional District, Virginia.

I don't know his parent's names or if they are linked to the Harrisons of Brandon and Upper Brandon.

Joshua had a son, William Franklin Harrison, who had a daughter, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison, that had a
son, David Harrison Johnson, who is my father.

It would make perfect sense for Sarah E. Baird Harrison to be buried there at the Kirkham Cemetery.

Mollie L. Hasty was from Portsmouth.

Marion Baird had a scar on his head that was a result of a gunshot wound inflicted by Kelly Bishop over moonshine. Bernice Baird story as told to a neighbor. Marion Baird drove a school bus. Didn't work anywhere else except the school bus and moonshine. Kelly Bishop was a revenueer and shot him at a still. He was the father of Marion Simms Baird. James Walter Baird, MD, was the father of Marion Baird.

The Baird cemetary on Rt. 612 is called Grape Hill.

Marion Baird was also a church going man.

Hi Gene,

Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison died in 1888. Her daughter married a Goodrich much later but did the Harrison's have a connection with the Goodriches or the Goodrich farm in 1888. There is no marker for Sarah in the Goodrich Cemetery and Sarah is not recorded on either of the cemetery inventory papers that Wanda showed us (written by her family).

The note I found was written by Sarah Johnson (Collier Johnson's wife) when they paid someone years ago to research family history. They think that she is buried in Prince George near Newville.

She died in France (receiving treatments for TB) so I guess there is even a chance that they did not send her body back home.

It's a mystery I guess....

Sarah was my grandmother, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison's mother. Sarah died of TB in France at Place Mayenne, Pays de la Loiire when my grandmother was just two years old. Sarah had been sent to France by her family to do everything they could to save her. The place that she went was suppose to be one of the best places for recovery but she did not make it.
Looking at the pictures does bring a great deal of sorrow that she must have felt at leaving her husband and young family and meeting her death in a strange and difficult place.

According to Sarah Smith Rowell Johnson (wife of Turner Collier Johnson who was the son of Joseph Franklin Johnson and Edmonia Salome Collier).....

Sarah E. Baird Harrison (wife of William Franklin Harrison) who died of TB on January 22, 1888 (the date of her oldest daughter's birthday, Lottie, who had turned 12 years old that day and also leaving my grandmother Nellie who was 16 months old, her other children Joshua, Herbert, Myrtie, and Clarah)

This could possibly place her at the Kirkham or Simmons Cemetery.

The Coleman Simmons Cemetery is 1.7 miles northwest of Disputanta on 460 then about 100 yards north of 460 in Prince George County.

The Kirkham Cemetery is described to be 1.2 miles north of Disputanta, Virginia, on route 618; thence .8 mile northwest on Route 629; thence .1 mile south of route 629, Prince George County, Virginia.

The Kirkham Cemetery contains the remains of Joshua Simmons and his daughter, Ann Simmons Harrison and her husband, William Thomas Harrison who are the great grandparents and grandparents of William Franklin Harrison, Sarah E. Baird Harrison's husband.

The Kirkham Cemetery also contains the remains of Joshua Simmons' daughter, Martha Simmons Stainback and her husband, Peter Stainback, and their son, Adolphus "Doll" and daughter Martha Stainback Kirkham.

Susanna Harrison Figg is the sister of Joshua Simmons Harrison who is William Franklin Harrison's father and Sarah E. Baird Harrison's (b. January 27, 1854 - d. January 22, 1888) father-in-law. Susanna is Sarah's aunt in law.

It would make perfect sense for Sarah E. Baird Harrison to be buried there at the Kirkham Cemetery.

Note from Doris Jean: When I was at the Snow Hill Cemetery in June, 1973 I recorded information from the only 3 tombstones there at that time. One was for Annie L. Booth, B. 1-1-1872 D. 7-20-1885 and engraved "Our darling hath gone before, To greet us on the blissful shore". The other two stones were for her parents, Binns Beverly Booth and Eliza Bingham Baird Booth.

(Medical):Diphtheria per the resolution by Carsley Church.
In the 1920s there were an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 cases of diphtheria per year in the United States, causing 13,000 to 15,000 deaths per year.[3] Children represented a large majority of these cases and fatalities. One of the first effective treatments for diphtheria was discovered in the 1880s by U.S. physician Joseph O'Dwyer (1841-1898). O'Dwyer developed tubes that were inserted into the throat, and prevented victims from suffocating due to the membrane sheath that grows over and obstructs airways. In the 1890s, the German physician Emil von Behring developed an antitoxin that did not kill the bacterium, but neutralized the toxic poisons that the bacterium releases into the body.
Unfortunately the treatment to save a life never made it to Surry County doctors in time to save 13 yoa Annie Laurie. 5 years after her death an antitoxin was developed, and later refined and later given to all school children throughout the United States ... Gene Harris

Sam Pete was a cripple and slept in feather bed in Snow Hill Plantation in the corner bedroom on the 1st floor. Last Booth to live in Snow Hill Plantation. His bedroom was in the rear 'T' addition on the back that is now gone. Hettie is buried in the old section of Waverly Cemetary. He lived at Snow Hill all his life.

He had the first rubber tired buggy ever seen in Surry County.

Courted Hettie Lee Rogers * (1874-1964) for 25+ years but never married. She bought 3 trousseaus. She was a graduate of the Southern Female College in Petersburg along with Ora Sue Baird. Sam Pete used to cut across the field carrying a lantern going to Hettie Rogers house which was was at Laurel Rd and Rt. 40. She was quite well off and had a large plantation house. Quote: in 1935 when the town of Waverly put in a sewer sytem, she refused to connect as she had no inside bath. Pat O'gery the town supervisor (he stuttered) told her it was the law and he could force her to. She told him "You can make me put one in, but you can't make me use it". She had electric lights and used lanterns.

Sam Pete was quite a drinker...per Kenneth Coker.

From Doris Jean Goodrich Johnson: I do recall Tilly (Edith (Tilly) Louise Goodrich Westbrook) saying that Mama used to prepare food for Sam Pete and Tillie would deliver it to him while Mama watched her as she crossed the field going to and coming from the delivery.

Joshua had a son, William Franklin Harrison, who had a daughter, Adelaide Cornelia Harrison, that had a
son, David Harrison Johnson, who is my father.

One of my New Year goals is to try to link Joshua with the President Harrison line. I think that he may have
been a cousin of some sort. I think that they were all well off financially since they are related to the Booths,
sent William Franklin Harrison's wife, Sarah E. Baird, to France to receive treatments for T.B. Sarah died
January 22, 1888 of T.B. leaving my grandmother who was only 16 months old. I have sympathy for William
loosing his wife, having young children to take care of, and loosing his father when he was a teenager. I guess he was too preoccupied to keep family records but I would like to go back and find out what his grandparents (Joshua's parents) names were and possibly link our family to the Presidents.

The land where the home is located and about 1000 acres belonged to our Ellis ancestors from the early 1600's. The land and original home was given by Bolling Ellis to his daughter and our ancestor Ann Rebecca Ellis who married Joshua Simmons Harrison. It was passed down or purchased by sons and daughters: William Franklin Harrison, Joshua James Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Julian R. Harrison, Jr., and presently to Julian R. William Franklin Harrison was just 34 almost 35 when his wife died. He had 6 young children and his widowed mother in his house hold. He may have had a sister in the household. His sister and mother did help him with the children. They were all recovering from the Civil War. If his wife's grave is unmarked, it would be understandable that he did not purchase a stone.

These are stones at Waverly Cemetery in Waverly, Virginia for Joshua James Harrison ("Nellie" Adelaide Cornelia Harrison's brother who had just
had a birthday and turned 8 when his mother died). His daughter, Helen, was just one years old when she died.

William Franklin Harrison and Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison had 6 children: Lottie, Myrtie, Joshua, Herbert, Clarah, and my grandmother, Nellie (long e sound).

When William Franklin Harrison's wife died he moved closer to his mother, Ann Rebecca Ellis Harrison. His mother and sisters helped to take care of the children.
William's oldest child was Lottie Baird Harrison (Wanda Goodrich Temple's grandmother). Lottie had just turned 12 years old when her mother
(Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison) died on her birthday, January 22.

JUST FOUND IN MY NOTES THAT SARAH ELLIS BAIRD HARRISON IS BURIED IN PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, NEAR NEWVILLE. So maybe we were on the
trail the other day when we were looking for the Kirkham Cemetery.

Kirkham Cemetery Location in the Report: 1.2 miles north of Disputanta, Virginia, on Route #618; thence .8 mile northwest on Route #629; thence .1 mile south
of Route #629. Prince George County, Virginia.

Kirkham Cemetery is located about fifty yards east of the residence, in the corner of an open field (1937). The plot is about sixty feet square, fenced in and neatly
kept (as of 1937). There is a lone cedar tree and one tombstone marking two graves.

Graves include: Martha Stainback Kirkham, William Kirkham, Joshua Simmons, 2 young daughters, Ann Simmons Harrison, and her husband, William Thomas Harrison,
James William Harrison, Martha Simmons Stainback and her husband, Peter Stainback, their young son, and possibly more.

I plan to volunteer to help inventory cemeteries in Prince George so maybe we will eventually come across Sarah Ellis Baird Harrison's grave. I'm also looking for William
Franklin Harrison's father's grave. His father was Joshua Simmons Harrison. If Joshua Simmons Harrisons mother was a Simmons, it would make sense for his son
William to bury his wife with his grandmother's family.

Rumor: Marion Baird had a scar on his head that was a result of a gunshot wound inflicted by Kelly Bishop over moonshine. Bernice Baird story as told to a neighbor. Marion Baird drove a school bus. Didn't work anywhere else except the school bus and moonshine. Kelly Bishop was a revenueer and shot him at a still. He was the father of Marion Simms Baird. James Walter Baird, MD, was the father of Marion Baird.

The Baird cemetary on Rt. 612 is called Grape Hill.

Marion Baird was also a church going man.
