    Notes:

    8. MACKIE2 NORVELL (James1), like her sister Christian,is thought to have been named for a grandmother or great -grandmother. Both the Christians and Mackies were families who lived in central Virginia in colonial times, and they may have married Norvells or Spencers earlier. Mackie (also written as Macariner or Macaranna) was married to William Thurmond in Goochland by the Rev. William Douglas. Since Goochland was the county of her residence when she married, and since James Norvell, Sr., was the only Norvell in Goochland old enough to be her father, she is presumed to be his daughter. Because Mackie apparently married without parental permission in 1766, she probably was at least eighteen at that time, hence born by 1748. She and her husband eventually moved to Albemarle
County, Virginia, where they settled on Green Creek in the southern end of the county, near her brothers and sisters. She died in Albemarle between 1823 and 1825. Her will , dated 1823, was witnessed by Anna Johnson, and George Norvell, her sister and brother and presented to the Albemarle
County Court in 1825 (WB 8:18).
