Notes:

When Thomas Booth was born in 1705 in Surry, Virginia, his father, George, was 26 and his mother, Mary, was 25. He had one son with Elizabeth Cobb in 1735. He died in 1766 in Amelia, Virginia, at the age of 61.

The book, "Booth Family History: One Lineage from Thomas, Sr. (1705-1767) of Amelia County, Virginia to Present" includes some very helpful research on Thomas and his descendants. The book was written by Timothy Douglas Booth (1948-2002) of Centreville, VA who was a descendant of Thomas Booth.

"On his last visit in April 1993, he was accompanied by two other Booths also descended
from Thomas, but from a different son. They video-taped their visit and the author has a
copy of the tape. According to Carlson, Thomas obtained first part of his land in 1724. He
built a brick house in 1725 using bricks which came over from England as ballast in the boats.
Also, the house was constructed from locally made bricks from reddish clay. Both kinds of
brick are found on the property and are shown in the videotape. On the original site, there now
stands a wooden house constructed about 1840. Mr. and Mrs. Ben

According to the book, Thomas was a "planter" who, at the height of his success, owned 2,000 acres with a plantation on which he farmed and raised livestock. At the time, only one planter in ten had an estate of more than a thousand acres so he was considered quite wealthy. His plantation was located in Southside Virginia in present-day Amelia County about 23 miles west-northwest of Petersburg and 27 miles southwest of Richmond. He lived most of his adult life in this area.

Thomas and Elizabeth had seven children; five were sons and two were daughters.

That the Southsidc Booths and the Gloucester Booths are entirely different families seems to be clearly proven by the following records: First, their coata-of-arms are entirely dissimilar; also their family names, though it is a peculiar coincidence that a family of Southside Booths bought and settled in Amelia County on land on Swe;ithouse Creek, that had formerly belonged to Thomas Booth, the elder, by patent bearing date September 29, 1735'971,554 acres which the aaid Thomas Booth, Sr., had willed to hia respective sons, which he mentions in his will, recorded in Amelia County, September 15, 1758.
From family tradition we have it that George Booth of Gloucester was the father of Thomas of Prince George County, and following this Thomas Booth up we find that he was the Thomas Booth of Amelia County who received the patent of 1,554 acres on Sweathouse Creek, Prince George County [Amelia was formed from Prince George in 1734].
We will begin with George Booth of Gloucester.

Thomas Booth, died in Amelia County; married Elizabeth ---------. Will dated September 15, 1758. John Booth
(son of Thomas, son of George) "leaves to his wife, Elizabeth (Cobb) Booth, for life." See will in this article, as recorded at Amelia Courthouse Will Book (5), page 39, dated July 15, 1793; leaving his son, John C. Booth, one of his executors.

by Stella Pickett Hardy. Mary's father was James Shields, of Williamsburg, VA who was "one of the early ordinary keepers of the Colony." His descendants would include an early surveyor for York County, a Governor of Virginia and a President of the United States. He was my 9th great grandfather. More about James Shield:

John was just 23 and possibly living at home with his widowed father and together they were farming the land John would later inherit. John had married Mary Smith the previous year.

In the name of God, I, Thomas Booth Sr of the County of Amelia, being of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, vis:
First and principally I recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it hoping through the merits of my blessed Savior Jesus Christ to obtain full remission of my sins and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named.
First: I will that my debts and funeral charges shall be paid.
Item: I will and bequeath to my son THOMAS one shilling sterling to him and his heirs forever.
Item: I will and bequeath to my son GEORGE one shilling sterling to him and his heirs forever.

In the name of God, Amen. I, William Booth of Amelia County be sick and weak of body, but perfect mind and memory, and Calling to mind that it is appointed for all men once to die. Thereby make and appoint this my last Will and Testament and first I Recommend my Soul to almighty God Who Gave it me and my body to the Earth to be buried in a decent and Christian Like Manner and as for what temperial [sic] Estate it hath Please God to Bless me with, I Dispose of in manner and form following.

Item: I Lend to my beloved wife, Phoebe Booth, the plantation where I now Live and one hundred and Twenty acres of Land, and Six Negroes. Namely, Sam, In, Dick, Jane, Doll, and Luck, and Ten Head of Choice Cattle during her Natural Life or Widowhood.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son Mathew Booth one hundred and Fifty acres of Land to be taken off the upper part of the Land where I now live adjoining John Tucker and William GILLIAM to him and the Heirs of his body For Ever.

It is my Will and desire that When my son, Thomas Booth, arrives to the age of Twenty one that there may be an equal Division of all my Estate of what kind soever among all my Children them Living also if my Wife be Living Single at the time of Such Devision [sic], that She be allowed one choice Negro and a Child's Part during her Life or Widowhood.

Item: I Lastly appoint my Friends Archer Johnson and William Wilson and my Wife Phoebe Booth Executors of this my Last Will and Testament.

Will of George Booth

IN the Name of God, Amen, this tenth day of December in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty four, I George Booth of Amelia
County being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory,
thanks be to God for the same, and knowing that it is appointed for all
men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that
is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul to
the hands of God that save it; for my body, I recommend to the earth to
be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my
executors never doubting, but at the General Resurrection I hall receive
the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly
estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give
and bequeath unto my loving wife Judith Booth the use of my plantation
whereon I now live during her natural life or widowhood, she making no
waste thereof and at her death or marriage, I give and bequeath the said
plantation with eighty acres of land belonging thereto to my son John
Booth to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son William Booth one hundred acres of
land joining the aforesaid Plantation, the road and Deep Creek to him
and his Heirs and the remainder of this tract of land I give and
bequeath to my son David Booth joining Deep Creek at the bridge to him
and his Heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my two sons Nathaniel and George my land
on Sweathouse Creek to be equally divided. Nathaniel Booth to have the
lower part whereon the plantation is and George Booth to have the upper
part to them and their Heirs.

Item: I give to my wife Judith the use of one Negro man Jemmy and one
bed and furniture, two cows and calves, three dishes, half a dozen
plates, one iron pot, during her life or widowhood and then after her
death or marriage to be divided amongst my children as I shall mention.

Item: I give to my son William one Negro boy Will and no more of my
Negroes. Also I give to my son William one new bed and furniture, one
sorrel mare with blaze in her face and one sorrel colt with a star in
her forehead and this shall be allowed so much of his part of my stock
and household goods.

Item: My will is that my three old Negroes, viz: Peter, Anaid and Cloe
shall be kept on my plantation to support my children till my youngest
come to age or ever marry and then to be equally divided amongst my
children as follows: Ann Booth, Nathaniel Booth, George Booth, John
Booth, David Booth and Elizabeth Booth and my will is that my Six
Children have a Young Negro each when they come of age or Marriage In
Hope there be one for each. If there Should not, they that has received
it shall To much of their part of the Negroes. I mean --------------
Children last mentioned. And when the Youngest Child comes to age or
marries my desire is that all my Negroes may be Equally Divided Among
them as to say Ann Booth, Nathaniel Booth, George Booth, John Booth,

When John Booth was born on September 29, 1735, in Amelia, Virginia, his father, Thomas, was 30 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 20. He married Mary Smith and they had one daughter together. He then married Elizabeth Cobb in 1763 in Virginia. He died on December 7, 1807, at the age of 72.

John Booth was born 29 Sept 1735 in Amelia County, Virginia. He was the youngest of five sons of Thomas Sr. and was born on his father's plantation on Sweathouse Creek. Amelia County was created from Prince George and Brunswick Counties and was actually begun the same year John Booth was born. In 1757, in his early 20s, John married Mary Smith. Mary's sister Temperance married John's older brother Nathaniel.
It appears Mary Smith was born around 1730 in Lunenburg, Virginia to Richard Smith (b. 1695, m. 1711, d. 1759) and Agnes Cocke (b. 1691, m. 1711, d. 1773). Mary's parents had three sons and nine daughters and her mother, Agnes, was a daughter of Stephen Cocke and Martha (Batte) Bannister, granddaughter of Thomas Cocke, and great-granddaughter of Richard Cocke and his probable first wife, Temperance Baley. Temperance's mother, Cecily (my 11th great grandmother) had arrived in Jamestown on what was likely the 17th ship bringing in settlers. She and her family were give the title of "ancient planters."
Mary's father, Richard, owned a plantation on Spring Branch in the parish of Cumberland. In his will, which was proved in 1760, he left his daughter, Mary Booth "one silver spoon." Since Mary Smith had married John Booth just a few years earlier, it's likely she received any major gifts of land or belongings at that time.
John and Mary's children's names
Richard Cocke, my 10th great grandfather, was an original settler to the Colonies. He was born in Pickthorn, Shropshire, England around December 13, 1597 when he was baptized. He arrived in Virginia in 1627, obtained large grants of land, and settled at "Bremo," on James river, in Henrico county. He was lieutenantcolonel of his county, and was a member of the house of burgesses in 1632 from Weyanke, and in 1644 and 1654 from Henrico county. He owned three plantations named Curles, Bremo, and Malvern Hills. These totaled over 7,000 acres of land. The plantations that Richard Cocke had built would remain in the family for generations.
He died in 1665. When Richard Cocke wrote his last will and testament in 1665, he asked to be buried in his orchard near his first wife (Temperance). For more, were Richard, Thomas, Peter, John Jr., Stephen (my fifth great grandfather), Mary, Benjamin, and Agnes Clardy. Two sons, Richard and Peter, served in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. During the Revolutionary War, John furnished the army's commissary twice with 1,025 pounds of beef, 16 diets(?), 12 pecks of corn and pasturage on the first occasion, and 325 pounds of beef on the second. After the Yorktown victory in 1781, those who furnished supplies registered (for compensation?) with their county court. John Booth is recorded in Bedford County Court Order Book Number 6 on page 341 for March 23, 1782 and page 347 on March 25, same year. I hav not confirmed it but a post by Richard Booth on 1 May 2000, states that John Booth meets the
requirements and has become a registered patriot ancestor by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A. R.) and the Sons of the American Revolution (S.A.R.) effective October 1993. Any adult descendent of John Booth can become a member of either the D.A.R. or S.A.R. by showing their lineage to him.
John died in his late 70's on 7 Dec 1807 in Franklin County, VA.
Mary likely died before John since she is not mentioned in his Will.

Errors made in one document may be repeated in other documents. An example of oral history that may be in error is the story that Nathaniel Booth, a Revolutionary War soldier, came from Halifax County, Virginia to Elbert County, Georgia. He did indeed come to Elberton County, Georgia, but no evidence has been found that places him in Halifax County, Virginia

Article 7, Booths and Moores Settle in Elbert County

Nathaniel Booth was a Revolutionary War soldier who lived in Halifax County, Virginia. After the war he was given a land grant located in Elbert County, Georgia along Broad River. In about 1800, Nathaniel Booth set out for the new land with his wife and fourteen children. Along with the Booths came a young man, Thomas Moore, with a special attraction for one of Nathaniel's daughters, Judy Booth. The trip took several months, during which Judy and Thomas were at each other's side the whole journey.

Needless to say, Thomas and Judy were soon married. They built their house near the old Moore Cemetery, which is located in a small grove of trees along highway 72, as it crosses broad River.

Thomas and Judy had seven children. The youngest of those children, Joel Washington Moore, married Sarah Anne Hewell. Joel served in the War Between the States. He served as a cook in Company E, 1st Georgia Regiment. Food was scarce at the time. As the story goes, Joel was out with another soldier looking for food, when they came upon a turnip patch. They started filling a sack with turnips and greens, when a man came running up. The soldier with Joel ran away, but Joel stood his ground and explained to the old man, "my men are hungry and I am too. I am not a thief by nature, but I think you too would do what I am doing." The old man told him to help himself.

Soon after the war Joel inherited the Hewell family home. Joel didn't move into the home right away though. The community needed a doctor, so Joel agreed to pay the expenses of Dr. Jasper Bryan from Douglas, and allow him to live in the home while he established his practice, just so he would set up his practice here.

Joel Moore not only saw to the community's physical health, he also saw to it's spiritual health by becoming a charter member of Antioch Baptist Church. Before Antioch was built they attended Dove's Creek Church, and before Dove's creek Church was built, Joel's family had to ford Broad River in order to attend Millstone Church in Oglethorpe County.

Joel Moore owned many slaves. Two slaves in particular, Uncle Sim and Aunt Harriet, lived in a two room cabin near the old home. Every fall they were allowed to pick the remnants of cotton that had been left in the field for their own use.

One of Joel Moore's children, James Washington Moore, married Victoria Burden. One of those children, Ela Moore, married James William Ray. They had four children. One of those children, Willena Ray, married Bodie James Jones. They had three children. The youngest of those children, Kim Ray Jones, married Donna Gail Scoggins, and they had five children, Kevin, Jeremy, Misti, Brad, and Kerri. [Submitted by: Kim Ray Jones.]

Georgia: Elbert County: This Indenture made this thirteenth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five between Gabriel Booth and Robert Booth of the State and County aforesaid and John Hanna of the State of Alabama and Lauderdale County of the one part, and John D. Johns of the State and county aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that I Gabriel Booth for the sum of Sixty dollars to me in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents, the same being for claims of Nancy Booth and Joel Faulkner as their rights is vested m? together with my own claim as Legatee of Nathaniel Booth dec'd. And we the said Robert Booth and John Hannah do hereby acknowledge the receipt of twenty dollars to each of us paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents of the same as Legatees of said deceased. Mary married GUTHRIE David on 13 Sep 1786 in FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA. David (son of GUTHRIE Henry and JOHNSON Penelope) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

We know from her obit below that, in 1816, Agnes and Benjamin migrated to Franklin Co., TN.

Another story about the family and migration come from from J.B. Guthrie of Pelzor, SC who is a descendent of David and Mary Guthrie.

According to verbal family history, David Guthrie went to South Carolina to visit his brother-in-law, Stephen Booth (who married his sister Penelope). While he was down there he purchased 1,000 acres of land for $1,000.00, then returned home to Virginia for his wife, Mary Booth Guthrie, and their children. They loaded everything they could take on an ox cart and headed for SC. When they left, her wife's parents, John and Mary Smith Booth cried because the knew they would never see her again.

Not long after David and Mary Booth Guthrie moved to SC, Stephen and Penelope Guthrie Booth decided to move their family to Bedford Co., TN. According to family history, he tried to talk David into moving also but David told him he wished he had never left Virginia.

John and Mary Smith Booth did get to see their daughter again. David and Mary Booth Guthrie made a trip back to Virginia on horseback. They had to leave their children with a relative and since the trip took six months, when they finally returned, one of their smaller children did not know who they were.

Agness Clardy departed this life January 17th, 1847, at the house of William Farris, where she was kindly treated until death. She was the daughter of John and Mary Booth. She was raised in Virginia, Amelia County; born November 17th, 1755; married Benjamin Clardy, June 25, 1771.
In the Summer of 1776 she joined the Methodist Church, at what was then called "the Five Forks." She gave a home to one of the first Methodist Preachers who traveled and preached in that section; his name was Shadford.
After which time she, with her husband, moved to Bedford county, VA; then to Lawrence district, SC; then to Pendleton District, now called Anderson, and in the year 1816, moved to Franklin county, TN, where her husband died in faith, 1822-1832.
Those who read this may see that she was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church better than 70 years; and I can say, truly a very acceptable one. I could write much in her praise but I forbear. The day after her death, at the interment bro. Joseph Smith, whom she chose before her death to preach her funeral, attended and delivered a very feeling and appropriate address.
Her remains were surrounded by some of her children, grandchildren and great grand children and other friends, and though the weather was very inclement they stood patiently and deeply affected during the address. - The feelings of my own soul were deep and my tears were moved when I looked upon her cold remains and remember her address in the last love-feast which she ever attended where she arose and, leaning upon her staff, observed, "Nearly seventy years I have been a dear lover and close attendant of class meetings and love-feasts, and expecting this to be the last I shall ever attend, I want to say that I am still bound to serve God till death; I want you all to pray God to assist me and meet me yourselves in heaven."
This short address had a good influence on our love-feast, many felt it good to them. May God Almighty sanctify this short account of her life and death to the good of the living.

Stephen S. Booth (possible middle name was Shaybe), my fifth great grandfather, was born in Amelia County, Virginia in 1765 to John and Mary Smith Booth. He was very much the middle child as four children were born to the family before him and three after.

Four years after they were married, around 1790, Stephen and Penelope traveled along with a large group including his sister and bother-in-law, Benjamin and Agnes Booth Clardy, from Virginia to South Carolina to make a new home. The group settled in an area called Pendleton District, SC. According to "The Clardy Family History," the group also included Benjamin's three daughters and son-in-laws; John and Mary Clardy, David and Nancy Clardy Spearman and Jimmy and Sally Clardy Fleming. Other's who were have said to join them included Joab Clardy, Ellsworth Clardy, Henry Spencer, Polly Gambrell and others.

We know from her obit below that, in 1816, Agnes and Benjamin migrated to Franklin Co., TN.

Another story about the family and migration come from from J.B. Guthrie of Pelzor, SC who is a descendent of David and Mary Guthrie.

According to verbal family history, David Guthrie went to South Carolina to visit his brother-in-law, Stephen Booth (who married his sister Penelope). While he was down there he purchased 1,000 acres of land for $1,000.00, then returned home to Virginia for his wife, Mary Booth Guthrie, and their children. They loaded everything they could take on an ox cart and headed for SC. When they left, her wife's parents, John and Mary Smith Booth cried because the knew they would never see her again.

Not long after David and Mary Booth Guthrie moved to SC, Stephen and Penelope Guthrie Booth decided to move their family to Bedford Co., TN. According to family history, he tried to talk David into moving also but David told him he wished he had never left Virginia.

the third digit of which has been eaten, but it appears to be 1835 and
....(something eaten)...marian Pery County Alabama (Present day Marian,
Alabama is located in Perry County...the note may have been reference to
some member of Robert's family who had moved to Marian. The Booths were
well represented in central Alabama. My great grandfather, William King
Booth, spent the Civil War years in Montgomery....with a relative?.

Gabriel Booth was the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth J. Johns Booth. (We believe his father, Nathaniel was a Revolutionary War Soldier in Virginia and the reason he came to Elbert County, Georgia was that he received Bounty Land. Elbert County has many Revolutionary Soldiers and many that came from Virginia. I am still looking for proof on this.)
Gabriel Booth was born about 1779 and died before November 1844.
On July 26, 1806, Gabriel Booth married Elizabeth "Betsy" Stinchcomb in Elbert County, GA. They were married by A. Stinchcomb, J.I.C (Elbert County Marriage Book L-F, p. 28).
Gabriel was a veteran of the War of 1812 and he participated in the Gold Lottery of 1832.
EXECUTOR'S SALE.-Will be sold, on the first Tuesday in December next, before the Court House door in Elbert County, agreeable to the will of Gabriel Booth, deceased, the following tracts of land; one tract containing two hundred and twenty-five acres, more or less, on the waters of Broad River, adjoining Calvin J. By 1830, James and his family had moved to Haywood County where he appears to have been very involved in the legal and community affairs. He shows up in numerous records and had many dealing with other ancestors of mine including Castellaws, Cobbs, Brantleys, Steeles and others.

31 August 1836, James Booth sold 50 acres of land to John Hancock for the sum of one horse which was valued at one hundred dollars. Thomas J. In Sept 1839 John H. Cobb purchased five and one quarter acres of land from James Booth for $12.50. Source

Political Office:
In 1846, James Booth, Ichabod Herring and J. (John) H. Cobb were school commissioners for the fifth district of Haywood County. Source

Land:
In 1847, John Cobb deeded land to Richard Ward which is listed as being "bound by beginning at a Stake in the line at James Boothe north, thence west the said Boothes line, thus North the said Whitney line to Butterton's line then his line East to the to John D Castellow's line. Source

Land:
In November 1847 James Booth deeded one acre of land to the school commissioners with the purpose of building a schoolhouse. Booth made the transfer of real estate "for the good will that I entertain for the public school system."

Census:
By the census of 1850, James Booth was age 60 and his wife Nancy was 56. The children in house were James age (25 born abt 1825), Penelope (age 21 born 1829), Louisa (age 17 born 1833), and Susan Bacon (age 27 born abt 1823). Also in the house was William Evans (age 21 born abt 1829).

The family farmed land valued at $1,500. Next door was the farm of Augustus Brantley and his family.

Died:
What I think possibly happened was, after James wife, Nancy Ann Milligan died in 1850, he married Mary Lofton and moved with her to El Paso, AR where his son, Moses Love Booth, was living. James then died at the home of his son in 1861. Whomever wrote the bio incorrectly thought Mary was the mother of Moses Love Booth.....Patricia
