Comment: Began north of the gate to Alexandria National Cemetery.
Did two rows at a time. I apologize for the large number of
questionables but many are badly weathered. Some covered in ivey.
After contracting poison ivy on the second trip, I lost my
agressiveness toward clearing the ivy to see the headstones.
Also, when the stone said "died in the Xth year of their life",
I sometimes said "X years old", which may be off by 1.
In summing the entries, I count those whose last names are unsure,
and do not count those with no last name.

The following story is about William Tottington Rudd's sister:
13 year old, Ann Tottington Rudd, daughter of an Alexandria, DC, shopkeeper, recalled George Washington's career on her 1817 sampler. Her sampler is noted in several books and magazines regarding early needlework, however, her name was listed as Ann "Torrington" Rudd even though you can clearly see that she had stitched "Tottington". Her sampler is shown at The Lyceum - Alexandria's History Museum with the following wording:

William Tottington Rudd was the fourth child born to William Rudd (1775-1821) and his wife, Mary Anderson. Both of his parents were born in England, his father having specified that he was born in Nottinghamshire. The entire Rudd family endured the War of 1812 and many of them also endured the Civil War in Alexandria as well. William Tottington's father, William, died in Alexandria in 1821 and there are no clues as to what happened to his mother.
When William Tottington was a young man, he moved to Amsterdam, Botetourt County, VA where he met and married his wife, Lydia Amanda Hutchins on July 28, 1832. William Tottington Rudd established himself as a cabinet maker in Botetourt County. He and Lydia were the parents of five children: Mary Ann, John Wesley, George Washington, James William and Matilda Jane.
The Civil War was not kind to Botetourt County and the end of that war saw many families leaving the war's destruction and moving to Iowa. William Rudd and his family were among those who headed for Iowa.
William and Lydia were in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa by December of 1873. Lydia died on December 14 of that year in Logan. After Lydia's death, William remained in Iowa until about 1896 when left many of his family members and moved to Downey, California, where he died in 1898.
William Tottington Rudd was the only one of William and Mary's children to leave the Washington DC/Alexandria VA area. So he is responsible for many of the Rudds we find today in Botetourt County, Virginia as well as Harrison County, Iowa and Los Angeles County, California.
Inscription:
No marker has been found, but cemetery records called William "William Toddington Rudd". He was the grandson of John Rudd and Elizabeth Tottington, thereby indicating that his middle name, like that of many of his sibings, is Tottington, not Toddington. Cemetery records also indicate that he was born in 1810, but Alexandria records give the date stated on this memorial. It should be noted that at that time, Alexandria was a part of the District of Columbia.

Notes:
Mary Ann Rudd was the first-born child of William Tottington Rudd and his wife, Lydia Amanda Hutchins. William and Lydia had recently married and settled in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia. She spent her entire childhood in Amsterdam and married Reece Gatliff Pugh on February 11, 1850 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
At the close of the Civil War, Reece decided to move his family to Harrison County, Iowa. Many residents of Botetourt County made the same decision. Our imaginations envision a wagon train of native Virginians making its way from Botetourt County, Virginia to Harrison County, Iowa.
Reece and Mary Ann took at least six of their nine children to Iowa with them. Reece did not live to see Harrison County, so Mary Ann, with her six children, braved the journey and reached their destination. Her fourth daughter, Florence, met and married Daniel Cameron in Iowa and then moved to Edmonds, Snohomish County, Washington.
Mary Ann traveled to Edmonds to visit Florence and died there on February 6, 1901 at the age of 67. She had truly lived an adventurous life!

Ok, I had to pull out my Rudd research. Our g-grandfather William Edward Rudd was born 1855, his father, our gg grandfather, Augustus Samuel Rudd was born about 1812. He would be a contemporary of William Tottington Rudd who was born I 1809. I don't know where Wm Tot fits into the picture yet.
