(Medical):Diphtheria per the resolution by Carsley Church.
In the 1920s there were an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 cases of diphtheria per year in the United States, causing 13,000 to 15,000 deaths per year.[3] Children represented a large majority of these cases and fatalities. One of the first effective treatments for diphtheria was discovered in the 1880s by U.S. physician Joseph O'Dwyer (1841-1898). O'Dwyer developed tubes that were inserted into the throat, and prevented victims from suffocating due to the membrane sheath that grows over and obstructs airways. In the 1890s, the German physician Emil von Behring developed an antitoxin that did not kill the bacterium, but neutralized the toxic poisons that the bacterium releases into the body.
Unfortunately the treatment to save a life never made it to Surry County doctors in time to save 13 yoa Annie Laurie. 5 years after her death an antitoxin was developed, and later refined and later given to all school children throughout the United States ... Gene Harris

Quote: in 1935 when the town of Waverly put in a sewer sytem, she refused to connect as she had no inside bath. Pat O'gery the town supervisor (he stuttered) told her it was the law and he could force her to. She told him "You can make me put one in, but you can't make me use it". She had electric lights and used lanterns.

Sam Pete was quite a drinker...per Kenneth Coker.

From Doris Jean Goodrich Johnson: I do recall Tilly (Edith (Tilly) Louise Goodrich Westbrook) saying that Mama used to prepare food for Sam Pete and Tillie would deliver it to him while Mama watched her as she crossed the field going to and coming from the delivery.

    Notes:

FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: Well, I didn't know what he called himself, because he also had a girl, he also had a girlfriend, I presume she was his girlfriend, right across the road from him, where he lived.

He married a girl named Ruth, who as a Rogers, whose last name was Rogers before she married, and I understand she, her family owned a lot of land. TIM: Right. We've got a big cemetery back there with the Boothes. You've got pictures of that on the CD also. Gene Harris: I've got no idea where that is. I'd love to see it. FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: This is in Savage, around Savage. Ruth Rogers on the low plane, and she was a cute brunette with blue eyes, and she had -- Gene Harris: Now, Ruth Rogers: Who was she? She was the one that married Thaddeus Clyde Boothe? FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: Right. And so he sort of became friends with the postmaster that lived across the, right in front of their home, and, and he got mixed up with, when the time of the Depression, and they did do some moonshining or whatever you call it, I guess, because he seemed to have more money than anybody else around. FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: And, and the interesting thing that happened was that he did not, Thaddeus was, I know, from being an alcoholic, the Greyhound Bus ran off of the bridge up there between Petersburg Pike and Hopewell -- TIM DOWNEY: You see, this, Mother, this needs to be recorded here. FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: -- and, and -- TIM: -- he jumped in the water to save him. FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: And Mary, the youngest -- Gene Harris: Mary, Mary Louise Boothe? FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: -- right. Lived close by and Uncle Clyde, so I was told, Aunt Lin told me, went out to help. It's probably about as far as from here across the street, and jumped in the cold water. And -- TIM: The Greyhound bus left the road and went over into the -- FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: Yeah. And he -- TIM: -- the river. FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: -- got, he died of pneumonia. TIM: He caught pneumonia saving the passengers -- FRANCIS A. BOOTHE: From cold water. So he didn't die, evidently, as an alcoholic, he died from that.

RANCIS A. BOOTHE: Aunt Lillian, when we get down to her, she's the most interesting to me. I asked her when I went to stay with her, she was in her, lived to be 94, I said, Which one of these was the nicest of the seven boys? And she said, Clyde, but just think about it. He, he wasn't on the job all the time. So he could, when my grandmother wanted some help, all she had to do was call Clyde and Clyde came running and -- TIM: Right. He wasn't in the field for 12 hours a day --

    Notes:

Gene Harris: -- Percy Jackson, would be your father. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Oh. Daddy, Daddy was a merchant -- Gene Harris: That's Percy Jackson? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- right. And my mother was a postmaster. They had postmaster and the store together. Gene Harris: Now, what was the store? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Savage. Gene Harris: Was there a name on it? Did the store have a name. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Well, my grandmother's brother, Barrett, had a big old country store like, big old country store, and there was a Savage across, there's an intersection there. So it was a big Savage store there, but Waverly(phonetic). Not Waverly, Barrett, my grandmother's brother, had the post office there. I don't remember in the store, but he retired. So when he retired, my mother took the service and passed it and became postmaster there. So my father started out with a little old garage and then he moved his warehouse up to the big store that had a big floor to it. TIM: Is there a sign on it that says, Boothe General Store, or -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Not then. After that my father bought that piece of land, and, and built his own store. And that's when he had his sign, P.J. Booth, what do you call it -- TIM: General store? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- pay as you go, you know. There were a lot of blacks that weren't paying. They ________________ in good with him. TIM: Credit wasn't -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: So the post office was moved there, too. And, and besides that, Dad was quite a, a good businessman, because he drove a school bus for 25 years. I said, when he came to live with us, Why did you, why did you drive a school bus from Save to Berrysville(phonetic) which is about 10 miles on a horse during the wintertime when the snow sometimes was 2 feet deep, deep? And he said, To save money. Keep from paying gas. And then rode back. That's how he started out. So he drove a school bus then. And then when they switched schools, he drove one of the first school buses that was a chassis, had a chassis -- TIM: Chassis with a body built on it -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- with a body built on the side, where you just roll up the curtains and so forth. And then when the first school buses that looks like the buses today, was when my mother died, that was 1929. I rode in that school bus, a new school bus. I know that. TIM: And he also drove a dump truck or something, too -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: And anyway, he, he was paid about $100 a month for driving the school bus. And then in the summertime he had two dump trucks. I don't know whether he rented them or how, how it was, but that was when they were fixing the roads. And so he had two, two dump trucks with people working, driving, while he was in the store. So he had three things going at one time.

Okay. Let's go to Percy Jackson BOOTH, who was born June 6, 1893. He was born in Surry County, Virginia, and he died on March 3rd 1983, and he's buried in Claremont, Virginia, at St. Anne's Church. He was married November 10th, 1930. And, let's see. His first wife was Myrtle -- TIM: Martha Myrtle Clemons. Gene Harris: -- Martha Myrtle Clemons, who was born 1900. TIM: Prince George County. Gene Harris: And they were married, it looks like, April 23rd, 1918. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Prince George County, and they were married in, in my grandfather's home. Gene Harris: Okay. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I sat in the living room after they restored it. Gene Harris: So they were married -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- it was a pretty place they were married. Gene Harris: They were married at the Thaddeus Floyd farmhouse? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Married at my mother's, the J.W. Clements. Gene Harris: Oh, the Clements farmhouse? Okay. She apparently died the 23rd of January, 1929? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Right. SPEAKER 4: I thought that Daddy died in 1984? TIM: It was '83. MR. DOWNEY: '83. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: '83? That's what he said. Gene Harris: Okay. Now, let's see. The second wife was Martha V. McCoy, M-C-C-O-Y. She was born September 11th, 1909, in Surry County, Virginia. Her father was Isaac -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Oh, wait a minute. Gene Harris: -- Alva McCoy. I-S-A-A-C, Alva, A-L-V-A, McCoy, was her father. And her mother's name was Elva, E-L-V-A, Jane McCoppin, M-C-C-O-P-P-I-N. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I don't know whether that's correct or not, but I think that Martha was the one that wrote that. Gene Harris: Okay. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Because I didn't do that. TIM: It looks like your handwriting, Mother. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Well, that, that is not my handwriting. TIM: It's not? It could be hers, then. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: It's hers. I put something extra in there and squeezed it in, that's probably mine. But somebody else wrote that. Gene Harris: They had, let's see. Percy Jackson had three children: Francis A. BOOTH, Percy Jackson BOOTH, Jr., and Bonnie Beryl BOOTH. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Beryl is another ______________ BOOTH family. Gene Harris: Okay. Now, were all three, which, which wife were these children by? TIM: This one by the Clemons, that's mother. Gene Harris: Okay. So Francis, you're mother, you're Francis A. BOOTH? And your mother was Myrtle Clements? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Right. Gene Harris: C-L-E-M-E-N-T-S? The other two children, Percy Jackson BOOTH, Jr., and Bonnie Beryl BOOTH, were by Martha V. McCoy? Francis A. BOOTH was born when? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: December 6, 1919. Gene Harris: December 6, 1919? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yes.

Gene Harris: Addendum: This is information on Francis's father, who, now this was. TIM: Percy Jackson BOOTH. Gene Harris: Okay. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: My father, when my father and mother got married, my mother had relatives in Hampton, Virginia, and they came to, my father and mother came to Hampton, Virginia, and they rode the streetcar from Hampton to Newport News for a year, and they had a little boy born, but died the same day it was born. My grandmother said it was probably the cord or something like that, but after that my father moved back to the country. I don't know why, but he always loved the country. And so he moved to Surry County and that's where I was born.

Gene Harris: Okay. How about Oscar Hudson BOOTH? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Oscar Hudson was a, a big achiever. He, he did not like planting potatoes. Aunt Lin told the story where they would all get out and my grandfather would say, Plant the potatoes with the eyes up, and he was looking up at the sky, whether that's a joke or not. So he was a typical city boy. And he went to, I think he went to Newport News, came to Newport News first, and then got a job, and then every time he'd, and then he would go to school at night. And then he'd get another job, and then he'd go to school at night until he became a lawyer for the city of Richmond. Gene Harris: Oscar Hudson BOOTH was a lawyer for the city of Richmond? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yes. TIM: Uh-huh. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: By his, going to school.

FRANCIS A. BOOTH: John Beverly BOOTH was in world war -- TIM: He was a World War I soldier. Yeah. This is a very interacting story. Tell it. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I don't know if I can tell that story or not, because it's sort of a sad story.

Gene Harris: This is all John Beverly BOOTH? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yeah. TIM: That's right. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: He was, he was, I think it's somewhat of a dirty blonde, like, and we, we, he had a girlfriend when he left. And when he came back, his girlfriend, like a lot of stories, his girlfriend was married. And he, he, the one thing that the war left him with was bad feet because of -- TIM: Trench foot. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- being in the trenches over in England, I believe it was, in deep water.

And once in a, so Uncle Clyde, the brother, had a little house there. And Johnny lived in it for a while. And then he started to drinking a little. I remember he came over to my house when my grandmother came to live with us after my mother died, and he was drinking a little bit. And my grandmother said, You go right back to your house and don't come back to see me until you get okay. Gene Harris: That was his mother, Mary Louise Barrett?

FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yeah. So, so he wasn't a bad guy. And then later someone, I don't know, it was Gary maybe, who said he saw a picture of a base- -- he was good at ba- -- softball or baseball, I guess it was, and it had John's name, John -- Gene Harris: He played for -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- BOOTH in Surry County. TIM: -- a local baseball team in Smithfield that he played some baseball for. Gene Harris: We're still discussing John BOOTH? TIM: Right. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Uh-huh.

TIM: He was a, he was a bachelor. He never married the girl that he -- He went to the service and went to World War I, went to France. When he came back, however long he was there, she had met someone else and married. And he never married, he never dated or married again, did he? He never dated anybody -- FRANCIS A. BOOTH: I don't know, but my grandmother said that the reason that he did the, the drinking was because of, of the, what they gave him, drug, I guess, what do you call it -- TIM: For his feet? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- for his feet. Yeah. TIM: Uh-huh. FRANCIS A. BOOTH: It started like that.

BOOTH: One-room school down at -- Gene Harris: Was that Otterdam School? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: -- located at Otter Dam Wall (phonetic). Gene Harris: Okay. So that was the old Otterdam school, then? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yeah. Gene Harris: Old white, white clapboard building? FRANCIS A. BOOTH: Yes. And she drove old Billy, the horse, and her buggy to the school and back again. And she taught a small amount of children between one, first grade and seventh. And each summer she would go to summer school with the money she made teaching school in the winter until she got two years of college, and then later she went, you were required to have four years, so she went to school and got her degree in that.

And that's, I knew she was an achiever. There are so many stories about her. Because she, she got into a law course where most of them were guys. And she told me that two of them walked in, and they all started at these two girls in the law course. And, and then when the, they took the exams and so forth, they all were wondering what they were going to get, but only a few of them passed, and she was one of them. And, and she was, she was....

(Laughter.) Anyway, she's the only one in the family that had a chance to go to college that the parents paid for, see? And so Mary went at Longwood one year, and then she met Lloyd. And Aunt Lin told me this story. She met Lloyd, fell in love with him. And, and married, eloped to North Carolina and got married. And, and she, I think she regretted it later. And so there was a lot of jealousy sort of between Aunt Lillian and, and Mary. And she, she was a flirt. She looked the part. Gene Harris: Okay. Let's go -- FRANCIS A. See Herbert for full notes.

When they moved to Richmond, She made Herbert build a high wooden privacy fence around the backyard and she kept chickens. I remember her in her apron chasing a chicken around the yard, so we would have fresh chicken for lunch one Sunday. She made the biscuits and dessert (banana pudding) and Calvin would always fry the chicken in an old high side cast iron skillet. There were family dinners one Sunday a month.

Grandmother slept in an old feather bed that she loved and wouldn't sleep in a regular bed at all. She kept her snuff can under the bed.

    Grandmother by Faye Howard:
You asked me about things I remember about Grandmother too. Here it is. Grandmother would always crouch down to use the phone. She could touch her toes at 80ty. Her nick name was "Pinky". She loved to dip snuff, but she hid in her bedroom so we wouldn't see her spit. She loved to play Canasta, which she taught many of us to play, and taught us how to eat King Syrup mixed with butter on bread that was delicious. She was a homebody and kept the home very clean. She made a beautiful quilt with Granddad, Granddad's Dog and mule or horse, Thelma, Calvin, others on it chickens, flowers and so much more. She made it out of the old clothes and scratch material she found laying around. She was a very good sewer. Grandmother loved her flowers and bushes, she was on the quiet side but carried a big bat. When the children at Fox School would kick a kickball, bat a baseball or throw a basketball in her back yard she would run them out of the yard and later return them to the Principal after we played with them for a while. She would be so upset because the children would climb the fence, breaking it sometimes and killing her plants and flowers stepping or jumping on them. The children use to call her the Wicked Witch. Grandmother nor I ever forgot what I am about to tell you and she even talked to Mom about it when she was dying that she never forgot the day I stood up to her with my hands on my hips and told her, "I could be just a stubborn as she was", then I walked out of the house across the street by myself and bought me some candy and ate it before I walked back into the house to get my punishment for not obeying her. You see Grandmother, even when I thought I was too old for naps, made me take one. She would let Joanie go across the street and buy some candy when they thought I was asleep. I finally got tired of just pretending I would sleep and got up when Joanie came back into the house with her candy in hand. I told Grandmother I was going to get me some. Well, she said I was not unless Joanie took me across the street. Joanie decided she would not take me across the street until she was ready too. Then Grandmother said I could not go. That's when I said what I did and did what I did. Would I do it again. "Yes", even though my Daddy gave me the biggest and worse spanking of my life for not respecting my Grandmother and for not doing what she said to do, and I really couldn't go to school and sit down for a week. Grandmother felt so bad that the next time I came over she said, I am really sorry Faye that I told Linwood about everything. I really didn't know he would beat you like that." Of course, I am a Scorpio and we hold grudges for a long time but she knew that day that I was really hurt by the way she and Joanie acted but I forgave her for telling Dad. She wrote articles to the newspapers and I will always remember the one about the verse from the King James Version on, "Spare Not the Rod". I will look up that verse and let you know it as soon as I can. She was very political too and would speak her mind in articles she wrote to the paper. Lynn and Mary were also very political and wrote things. They learned this from Grandmother. She have premonitions. She called Mom early one morning and asked Mom if she had talked to me recently or heard from me. Mom said no and asked why. Grandmother said something is really wrong you should call her. Mom did and I told her I had a miscarriage and was going to tell her about it when I felt better. She told me Grandmother knew something was wrong and that was why she called her and told her to call me. Grandmother told me other times when she knew something was going to happen and they did. Grandmother was Grandmother, I loved her, accepted her and am proud she was my "Grandmother" when I got old enough to understand life a little better instead of through a child's eye that's when I could understand her better.

Died of brain tumor which developed after head injury caused by flywheel flying off a piece of farm equipment. Called "Boss" by family and friends. One of the pictures at BK924 shows him, wife Pearl, and daughter Edith, on the front porch of their home located on Rt. #40 (MLK Hwy.) The house was dismantled in 1977 after his daughter Doris Jean and husband Shirley Johnson built a brick ranch house behind it.
He owned farm called Gilliams (other side of Averys Mill Pond - now called Cockes Lake) when first married. All children except Doris Jean were born there. Family sold it to Continental Can in 1965, who later sold it to Carrolls Foods (hog farm) behind Marvin and Pat Padgetts.

Aunt Stella was always very fond of Calvin Horne and he was her little doll baby. This was before she married and had kids. She always had a nice disposition and was friendly towards everyone. Her children were like sisters and brothers to the Horne family. Aunt Stella always blushed very easily. Mary Virginia Horne remembers that Aunt Stella had a crush on a friend of Herbert Raines Horne's, Myron Benton, that moved to Conneticut and everytime he came down to visit Herbert Raines Horne, Aunt Stella had to rush over to visit and she would stand there and her face would turn red when he would walk in and she would look at Mary Virginia and say 'you little devil you'd better keep your mouth shut and don't say a word', but her face was so red that no one had to say anything.

    Notes:

Herbert Calvin Horne, Sr., was born on Jan 8, 1909 at Milton Farms in Disputanta, Virginia. Very little is known about him until his teenage years. *** Check with Landon for younger years In his senior year of high school at Waverly High Schools, he came home one day and told his father that he might as well give him a whipping now because he wasn't going back to school for another day if he had to continue taking chemistry under Mr. Level, because he embarassed the kids that he didn't like and showed favoritism to certain of his cronies children in the class. At this point Calvin Horne quit school and went to work on his daddy's farm for several years. Frank Pulley, a lawyer and businessman came to Calvin and asked him if Calvin would run his store (Lindsey's Store). Calvin took over the running of the store and after a few years, Frank Pulley asked Calvin if he would like to buy the store. Calvin bought this, his first store and ran it for many years. Calvin borrowed the money from his mother and she loaned him the money from what he had been paying her for room and board. She had never spent it but kept in in her trunk in the upstairs bedroom at the farmhouse. The trunk was between the two beds and under the front window. This made a nice down payment on the store and it took Calvin about five (5) years to pay off the rest of the loan to Mr. Pulley. He sold this store and build Horne Sales & service across the road. This new store sold Chrylser/Plymouth cars and tires for the lumber yard people. He had a small grocery, but only sold limited items, mainly for workers to make lunches with. Calvin never mailed a bill. He kept a little notebook that he listed the people he gave credit to. And he never had a customer leave town owing him a bill, even though he never mailed out one. He had one family, with several small children, that he gave credit to, repay him with several musical ukelins to settle their account before they moved to Suffolk. This was Mr. Lupton. One would have paid the bill, but Mr. Lupton insisted he take both. Joan Howard (niece) still has one of these ukelins and Martha Jane (his daughter) has the other one. It should be noted at this point that one of the very few faults Calvin had all his life was a penchant for fast cars. At one point Preston Harrell, the mayor's son, bet Calvin that he could be in Wakefield before Calvin. Calvin then left someone in charge of the store and he and Preston left for Rt. 460 to start the race. Someone squealed to the town cop and he was sitting on the road waiting when Calvin was in front of Preston and saw the town cop. Calvin was able to slow down in time, but Preston hadn't seen the cop and passed Calvin in a blaze of speed, went passed the cop and was going so fast the cop couldn't even clock him, however Preston realized his fat was in the fire and had better stop before things got worse. In another incident, Calvin driving a red car actiually outran the police coming back from Petersburg. He had passed the policeman and the police started chasing him. Calvin managed to take a cutoff on a dirt street behind the old train depot and the cop never saw him and lost Calvin. When he hit the railroad tracks by the depot, Calvin's car went airborne. Calvin never was one to take his time going from one point to another. One one occurrance Calvin Horne was carried upon the wings of angles while driving his car. Preacher Harrell was having a revival in Waverly Baptist Church. Now, Preacher Harrell lived in Claremont and Calvin had arrived at the church ready for the revival meeting, when he was asked where the preacher was. You see, the preacher didn't have a car and certain members were to bring him on given nights. Well, this was Calvin's night and he had forgottten. Calvin made it to Claremont and back and the revival was only 20 minutes late. To this day, people swear that Calvin and the good Lord straightened out all those curves on Rt.40 to get the preacher to the church on time. To this day the 18 to 20 minute run from Waverly to Claremont and back hasn't been beaten. The preacher told Calvin not to worry that the lord was on their side. Calvin didn't remember the ride to Claremont and was 12 miles one way on a crooked curbved road with two small bridges over the Blackwater swamp. In his early teen years Calvin was dating a girl that lived across the road from his families farmhouse, named Evelyn Chesson. She was in love with a boy that had gone in the Navy and Mary Virginia (sister) knew this. She didn't want Calvin dating this girl. One day Calvin came home, put his car keys on the kitchen table and went upstairs to change to take her to a movie in Petersburg. Mary Virginia took his car keys and went out in the yard, yelled up to Calvin to look out the window. She told him she had his car keys and wasn't going to give them back to him since Evelyn Chesson was using him. Calvin yelled for her to hush as he didn't want Evelyn to here Mary. Mary then ran to the outhouse and locked herself and Calvin's car keys inside. Calvin was begging Mary Virginia for the keys and even offered a $5 bill to put the keys on the porch. Mary decided that $5 was worth more than Clavin making a fool of himself over the girl and gave him back the keys. Within a month's time Clavin took Evelyn Chesson to a dance and her boyfriend (Gwaltney Raines) came home on leave, came to the dance, claimed his girl, and Calvin was left standing at the dance, sans girl. Calvin was so mad he tried top run people off the road and when he got home Mary was able to say 'I told you so'. While living in Waverly, Calvin was a member of the Ruritan Club and Rotary Club. Mary Jane Sheffield was born and raised in the house behind the store and Calvin had known her ever since he bought the store. After Calvin bought this store they used to talk over the fence between the store and her house and very soon one thing led to another and they became husband and wife, on June 15, 1940. This was one week before his sister's birthday and her graduation and she was furious with him for not waiting. Of course, Calvin was one of those who used to spoil Mary Virginia. They were married in Waverly Baptist Church, by Rev. Albert Harrell in a small intimate ceremony. Mary Jane didn't have any attendenants and Calvin didn't have a best man. They left and went to New York for the World's Fair for their honeymoon. They stayed with Cyrus & Effie Leap. They also went to Niagra Falls during the honeymoon. When they returned they stayed at Herbert & Mary Horne's farm house until they got an apartment in a house next to the Baptist Church. HC, Jr., was born while they lived in the apt. They then bought a house on West Main Street. It was small brick bungalow with 2 bedrooms downstairs. Martha Jane was born at this house. Mary Jane worked from her teenage years through this time as a waitress and hostess at the restaurant at the corner of Main Street and Rt. 460. She was also choir director at the Waverly Baptist Church. She is remember by everyone as being very beautiful, quiet and loving. During this time Calvin sold H.C. Horne Sales and Service and he and Bob Clark bought Waverly Feed and Seed on Main Street.Note: Mary Jane's father, Cleveland Sheffield was murdered when she was younger. He was the paymaster for Gray Lumber Company and disappeared on a Friday afyternoon, when he was on his way with the payroll to pay the employees. His body was found three weeks later in Blackwater Swamp. The murderer was never apprehended or identified. The family continued to live here until after Mary Jane passed away, shortly after Martha's 3rd birthday. Mary Jane died in January 1951. Mary Jane died from Cirrhosis of the liver, even though she never drank alcohol. This was possibly cancer instead as cancer wasn't widely known at that time and the symptoms were the same as Herbert Horne's stomach cancer. His sister Mary Virginia spend the first six months after Mary Jane's death with Calvin to look after the children and take care of the house. He was able to obtain a Baptist minister's widow from Richmond as a nanny for the children. She was very rough on both H.C. Jr. and Martha, and Calvin ended up having to take HC, Jr. to the store with him. Calvin fired her later. Calvin also sold Massey Ferguson tractors for Surry Implement Co and later sold John Deere tractors for Dudley Robertson Tractor Co. Shirley James Johnson remembers that Calvin could sell anything. He was a born salesman. He met Glayds Bradshaw and married her in 1952. From this marriage was born his third child, Catherine Denise Horne, on September 12,. Calvin then bought the big 2 story white house on Main Street. This had a garage and a side stable that held the pony he got for H.C. and Martha. Of course, all the rest of the nephews and nieces had to ride also. This probably contributed to the pony having a sway back. Every Christmas Calvin and H.C. used to set up a model train that ran all around the living room at this house. This was a tradition for as long as I can remember. We used to put christmas presents on the train and ride them around the room. The parlor of this house was off limits to us kids and was used for company only. The marriage bwtween Calvin and Gladys was not destined to work and they divorced in ?????. Calvin, in partnership with Richard Spain, next purchased a grocery in Petersburg, Va. He stayed there until one of the assistant managers started taking the profits home in groceries. Calvin never prosecuted him and sold the store. He then came to Richmond and lived with Linwood and Mary Virginia Howard. While living here in Richmond he sold Chrylsers and Plymouths at the dealership at Belvidere and Broad St. During this time his son H.C., Jr. went into Demolay and went through the Order and became A Master Councilor of his chapter. It is said that bad things come in three's. This has centainly been the case in Calvin's life; Mary Jane's father died as a young man, Mary Jane died as a young woman and his son H.C. Jr., died as a young man, on Calvin's 68th birthday. For one so honest and caring as Calvin was, he was followed by bad luck with those he loved so much. About a year after coming to Richmond, Calvin bought a grocery store in Thornsburg and the family moved into a house trailer next to the store. I remember that at one point when I was visiting that Calvin decided that H.C. Jr., needed to loose some weight, so he made him dig a drainage ditch all the way around the trailer without stopping. Well, Calvin looked at the ditch HC was digging and decided that it wasn't deep enough, so this drainage ditch turned into being a 3' deep ditch and HC literally sweated buckets digging this ditch. He was so tired that he didn't even think about food that whole day. He did however drink several BIG coke bottles full of water. After this, H.C. started dieting in ernest and lost a most of the extra weight he was carrying around. I guess that he was afraid Calvin was going to make him dig another ditch and he never put the weight back on again. Calvin sold this grocery and moved to Hanover Courthouse where he opened another grocery that was called the Hanover Market. The house was next to the market and had a fenced in yard. His mother lived there with him in 1964 and stayed there for quite a few years. They had a pond out back and an old Packard in the garage that he had received in payment for a customers bill. While there in Hanover Courthouse the great family race took place one year, between Calvin, Linwood Howard, Tommy West and Bob Cowdin. Calvin was driving HC's GTO, Linwood had the old blue Oldsmobile, Tommy had a State Police cruiser and Bob was driving a small sportscar. The race started on U.S. 301 in front of the store and went to the bridge just North of the Courthouse. Tommy, in the State Police cruiser was the winner although Calvin wasn't too far behind.
A finer, more Christian man would be hard to find.

They had a trailer beside the store. The store is still there. One day Calvin decided that HC needed to lose weight, so he made him dig a 2' ditch around the trailer and then fill it back in. All this was because HC loved his moon pies and cartons of milk (and a lot of other sweets) and put on a lot of weight. HC never went back to a lot sweets again and retained his much lower weight.

Evelyn Mae Horne Harris 1913 - 1994. Evelyn and Aunt Mary lived at Mrs. Agee's rooming house on Brook Road in Richmond after they moved up here from Waverly. She graduated from Waverly High School and Massey-Ferguson Business College (poss also known as Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, VA.) She worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Christian Children's Fund and was an executive secretary in the men's division of Miller & Rhoades (where she retired from). She was a member of the Eastern Star and was Matron of Blanche Spencer Chapter of the Eastern Star. In later life and until she died, she lived at the Eastern Star Home in Richmond. She was an avid gardner and everyone remembers how she used to overload us with all types of squash. She attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond for 30+ years. Bought her house at 312 N. Meadow St and lived there for 20+ years. Prior to that she owned a house in the 1800b of Hanover Ave. She loved to cook and was always bringing her dishes to family events. She would adopt a family every Christmas and make sure they had a Christmas meal and that everyone in the family had presents, especially the children. She instilled in her son that sense of giving to those less fortunate. She was a truly dedicated Christian Woman.

    Notes:

George Landon Horne was born September 20th, 1918 on the farm in Sussex County He was delivered by Dr. Stoneham. Dr. Stoneham failed to send in a birth certificate to the state, so there is none on file. He attended and graduated from Waverly High School, in Waverly, Virginia in 1935. He walked to school until his senior year, until transportation was available (this was 1.5 miles each way). His first job was at the D. Pender grocery store in Waverly, Virginia. He attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Va. His hobbies were baseball, horseshoes and fishing. He was a Phi Beta Kappa president. He served in the US Army in WW-II in the 10th Armored Division. He then went to OCS and was commissioned an officer and went with the Army General Hospital Corp and served in the South Pacific in New Guini and the Phillipines. He later retired as a LTC in the Army Reserve Hospital Corp. He can still, in 1992, fit in his WW-II uniforms. Landon is 5'6 and his avg weight all his life has been between 120-125 pounds and he is 5'6, with brown hair and blue eyes. He joined the insurance firm of Gibson, Moore and Sutton and retired as a partner and Corporate Secretary. Landon and his family are members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and Landon served as Deacon, church clerk, and was on the administrative board. He should be remembered that he practiced his religion in everyday life as well as attending church regularly. Landon met his wife, Mayme Virginia Newman (Ginny), at a church forum at Tabernacle. She was living with her aunt Mamie, here in Richmond. Ginny was working at Richmond Machinery at the time. They fell in love and married within a year. Their first house was at 3314 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, Va., and paid about $11,000 back then. It should also be remembered that gas was only .25 a gallon. Landon would like to be remembered for raising two (2) exceptional, honest and Christian children in this age of temptation and moral decay. Betsy's and Justin's Father died just before 1:00am, Saturday, July 21, 2001.

Her history from a leter from Doris Jean on 4-4-2006:

Doris Jean Goodrich was born to Benjamin Taylor Goodrich, Jr. and his wife, Mabel Pearl Westbrook Goodrich during the Depression in 1931. Jean was the youngest of five children and the only one born in the house they built on the farm he purchased November 1921. Located across the road from Snow Hill, the farm was once part of Snow Hill Plantation before it was partitioned (divided) among heirs. Before, they lived in a small house near Avery's Mill Pond on a farm Daddy owned called "Gilliam" which was once a part of the B. B. Goodrich farm that was also divided among heirs. In order to care for Mama the heirs sold the farm at public auction in 1964. My husband and I purchased it and in 1965, we moved into the house in which I was born.

Benjamin, known as "Boss" to family and friends died on May 28,1931 of a brain tumor reportedly caused by a head injury incurred by a wooden flywheel spinning off a piece of farm equipment. One of the saddest, most heartbreaking pictures I have ever seen was the one of Mother and her four children, Marvin, Norman, (Bernard Taylor died of flu in 1922 at one year of age) Edith, and me taken shortly after Daddy's funeral. She was wearing her mourning clothes and was holding me, a six month old, on her lap. All wore sad expressions. I am indeed grateful to my older cousins who so generously gave me that picture and many other old family pictures when they cleaned out their parents personal belongings after their death.

In those days, farmers used horses and mules to produce and harvest their crops. The equipment mentioned above was a stationery steam engine with flywheels and belts to power equipment for thrashing peanuts and grain. I remember it stored in under a shed attached to a barn located directly in front of the Snow Hill house. There was also a small corncrib located near the barn but closer to the road. Older family members, probably Daddy's sister, Aunt Stella, and my Mother, told me that both buildings had been part of Snow Hill property and I have always wondered why those farm buildings were in front of the main house. Ella Gertrude Booth, the mother of Stella and Benjamin, Jr., grew up at Snow Hill so Stella should know about such matters as the location of the outbuildings.

In 1974, when I began to gather a little family history, Aunt Stella told me her mother Ella Gertrude Booth left the house one morning to milk cows at the barn across the road. Instead of milking cows, she jumped in the buggy with the waiting Benjamin Taylor Goodrich, Sr. to be married. That was August 26, 1876. Does anyone have a record where the wedding took place? I wish I had taken more time to learn more history our older relatives would have enjoyed sharing with me.

Stored in the same shed with the steam engine were two old cars. One was a Buick and the other a Ford. When I was about seven years old, the family tackled the dusty, dirty job of clearing the barn of old, worn out plow points, cultivator hoes, various parts of unused, worn out equipment and whatever other junk which had accumulated. Little did Mama know Japan would throw the junk she sold or gave away as scrap metal back at this country during World War II.

Mama must have been a special person and manager to hold the family together and to retain possession of the farm without losing everything during the Depression. Fortunately for all of us her two oldest were boys. She taught them that she became BOSS when he died and the boys never stopped calling her that. Marvin was 14 and Norman was 12 when Daddy died, so they were of great assistance in getting the farm work done. One of my elderly neighbors told me a few years ago he often saw my brothers working the fields or in the woods cutting firewood and he wondered how she got them, at such young ages, to do those jobs. The wood was necessary for heating in cold weather and for the cook stove in all kinds of weather regardless of how hot the kitchen got in summer.

All of us learned to carry our share of the load as soon as we became old enough. Edith (Tillie) was about 6 ½ years older than I was, so when Mama's mother, Otelia Florence Westbrook came to live with us prior to her death, Tillie recalls the stacks of laundry necessary to keep Grandma's bedclothes clean. An eleven or twelve year old using a scrub board for the chore would never forget it. We can really appreciate the conveniences electricity brought to rural Virginia when electric lines were constructed when I was a teenager. Grandma died when I was in first grade. My memory of her as being sick in bed and I had to be quiet so as not to disturb her. I also remember her casket in our living room and the unusual activity in the family the day of her funeral.

Marvin managed to get an eighth-grade education, Norman and Tillie graduated from Dendron High School. I rode the school bus to Dendron for eight years, and commuted to Waverly for High School. Mother had learned early, probably before Daddy's death to drive an automobile, so she was not at all reluctant to allow me to drive to school as soon as I was old enough for the license. I do not recall she was ever without an automobile. Transportation was a necessity as we lived five miles from the nearest town. On Sundays, she allowed the boys to drive us into Waverly for Sunday school at Waverly Methodist Church although she stayed home, probably to get some much needed rest and peace.

Prior to graduation, I thought I wanted to become a nurse. Louise Obici Hospital was under construction at the time and their representatives made presentations at the schools recruiting candidates for their nursing school. My interest in a nursing career faded when they took us on a tour of their existing Lakeview hospital, including the conditions in the wards and as far into the surgery area as they could. Nursing is a noble and rewarding career for others but Jean did not have what it required. Another reason for not pursuing nursing, in September 1948, I started dating Shirley Johnson who had been out with several nurses there and had heard from them how difficult working conditions were. I think their demanding schedule interfered with his dating schedule! Anyway, I valued his opinion.

After graduation in 1949, I worked about eight months in the office of East Coast Electric Company, a small company located in Waverly that sold out to Virginia Electric and Power Company in March 1950. VEPCO transferred me to their Richmond Office. The city was too much for this country girl! There was nothing but concrete, masses of people, vehicles and their pollution. I quit after three days and came home. Preparing for vegetable planting, Mama and I were clearing the debris from the garden spot a few days later when the President of the Farm Credit Office in Waverly (known then as Southside Virginia Production Credit Association and the National Farm Loan Association) came to ask if I was interested in applying for a bookkeeping job with them. Their executive committee interviewed me that afternoon and I went to work a few days later.

The work ethic, honesty, and integrity instilled in me at an early age paid off. I continued to learn more and more about as much of the business as I could, took all the courses and training Farm Credit offered. Most related to accounting, loan processing, training and management. Just keeping up with changes taking place in a financial institution was a challenge then as it is today and will continue. Actually, the organization and I grew together. The bookkeeping position in 1950 turned into the position of Vice-President, Financial and Administrative Services. In1988, when the local organization, which served counties in Southside Virginia and the cities of Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, merged with four other Farm Credit Associations to become Colonial Farm Credit, I retired and became a full-time homemaker and wife, and a part-time Grammy to two grandsons.

The U. S. Army drafted Shirley in January 1951. He served two years and we were married twelve days after his discharge. We went back to our jobs five days later. Our son Jimmy was born twelve months later, the most precious Christmas gift I ever had. He was a joy to raise, and his father was always there and had a positive influence in his life. We had no other children.

Jimmy and his first wife, Gloria, have two boys. Taylor is now a student at James Madison University and Emory is in high school at New Kent.

    Notes:

Jessie Merle Chappell. ( Wednesday, February 10th, 1999 I'm 78 years old. We have been married for 58 years as of Saturday the 30th. He is 84 years old and we got married on his birthday. Four children. Two girls and two boys. And I wanted six, because the lady over here across the road, Mrs. Pageant, had 10. And, I thought it was wonderful, and I said one out, of the 10 would look after... you know when you get old. I really had five and lost one, and the last one I had cried so much I said this is it. No more babies for me. I lived up the road two miles and 1 he lived here, and uh, he used to , come up there with the other kids and we played together and I had no idea about him, but he had an idea about me. I remember one time we were out there pumping water and he come and said... he wanted to know... how old I was or something, and he let me know he was interested. And, I could care less. I think I was 13 years old. Well, really we grew up to- gether. I didn't never really know 1 was in love, it just automatically came in there, (with a chuckle). We just started dating and uh, we dated with a coupIe across the road, Vernice and Robert Moore. We dated until we were 16 and 21. At first it was just now and then, but around graduation we got closer and closer. I had no idea that he was gmng ff to ask me to marry him, and we 1 were going to Petersburg and were up in Prince George. I don't know what the name of the road is, some- thing Gumeyville, and he stopped underneath the oak tree and gave me a diamond. They al1 get a big kick out of that... thekids go by there and say, 'which tree?' Wel!, there is no tree there now. I couldn't imagine why he was stopping, (with a hearty laugh). He stopped, and then he wanted a kiss, and then he had the box, and then he gave me the diamond. We really didn't have any romantic, whatever, you know. It was just built on up. He's never brought me flowers or anything. We don't even get each other Christmas presents. We never have. We just buy what we want during the year and when Christmas omes, we spend it on the kids. We built a little house up here: it's that house on the hill, we built thati Well, first we moved over across the road and that house 1 burned out and then we had built this one before that one burned out, so we were livin' on this one on the , hill. And, we came down here when, uh, Sherry was one year 01d. She's 47 now. So we've been right i here in this house ever since then. He's just so good. He's good and I easy and easy to get along with. You can't pick a fuss with him. And, I've tried. Not really. But, you've got to let him know that you're right sometimes. But, he's mostly always right. He's always been real good. I'll tell you... I don't reckon there's anybody been, anywhere i around here, had, as good a time as we had. We used to go drivin' with Vernice nearly every Sunday and then when I kissed him, a long time ago... we used to go on a trip every summer. And when Wayne got married, we did go on a trip with them every August until the last two. I think the happiest moment that we shared would be... I guess when I had each one of my babies. 1 re- ally wanted children. He didn't. He wasn' t raised with children. We had two girls and two boys, but 1 lost a girl. I lost a girl at birth and then I had a miscarriage. One of my kids would cry and cry, and hold her breath. She held her breath till she turned blue. I was doing something and Sherry was seven,' she practically raised her you know, she looked after her. 1 said, 'Sherry, go in there and get some - water and throw it in her face,' I always heard that would do it. So, she went in there and she got some water and she threw it in her face and when she did she was at , the stage that she was gasping air in, and when she did it went down her wind pipe and strangled her. And she was a little bitty thing, but . she knew she was gone and she re- ally stopped in her tracks, but she didn't hold her breath anymore. When Phillip lost his sister was probably one of the saddest mo- ments that we shared. He really thought alot about her. We have so many moments that are funny, I call tell you one thing that happened, but it was really within the family. Our children... he was always after them, you know. And our oldest son had to go to the bathroom every night after supper. Well, we didn't have a bathroom, so, he had to go out there, (point- ing outside). Phillip said, 'I'll fix him.' So, I said, 'What are you going to do?' and he said, 'I'm going to get a white sheet, and I' m going around behind the smoke- house and when they come out, I' m going to scare them,' Well, the little one had to go with the older one, because he couldn't go by himself. So I had to come out to see what was going to happen. So, I came on out here to the side, and they came on from the Johnny house and he got after 'ern, and they took outta runnin' in the house. And this porch won't here then. And they ran in there and locked the 100rs and locked us out- side ~ and we couldn't get in. e had a time in this world gettin' in. Finally one of them came to the door, it musta' been the one that was be- hind the chair in the livin' room- Came and unlocked the door. And, there was a day bed right here. In fact, junior had a brand new shirt on, and he was so scared... (laugh- ing) we couldn't get him from under the bed we had to pull him out - tore his new shirt. We laughed and we laughed and we laughed. It broke him too, he didn't go to the bath- room after supper anymore. No, everything we did, we did. together. We always have. He fanoed and I fanoed with him: Many a day I worked with him ~1.. day long and the next morning he had to pull my feet out of bed to get out. He didn't go his way, and I didn't go mine. We always did things, together, and then when he's farming if I wanted to go off with the girls, I went. But, he never... he was, too busy to go off with any men. Lord... I've had six or seven girl friends at a time. Mercell Blue ano Janet Kyer, we were three muske teers. I used to say, 'I can't see,' I had glasses in my pocket book, and we would go to the doctors together and they would read to me like-I - really couldn't see. It was really comical. I would say to young couples. who are just starting out - they've got to give over. They can't be a one-sided affair. Give over to each other. One can't take it all. It's give and take. Nowadays, everybody's for themself. We don't have any plans for Valentine's Day. He's never even given me a box of candy... nope... I.. really don't know why, he just didn't. I guess it's the type of person he is, I don't know, he never has We've never had much money. '. We used to go to Richmond alid - I we'd carry sandwiches along to eat. Because we didn't have the money, , to go out to eat. We were raised in the poor days. Nowadays, they all want to start out with everything. We couldn't do that. We didn't have any money to do it with. We were I lucky if we had a table and chair to , eat off of; but we did. Still have the table in yonder right now. That'll be the saddest thing that will ever happen... he goes away I and leaves me... I'll tell you right now. I've always said, well if I have to go, I hope that I would go before, he did. It looks like it might be tit for tat, (with a chuckle). It looks like both of us are going down the hill together. We're really lucky that we have four really good children. We've never had a problem with them and they really look after us and the one up on the hill', he's really', well he's here. They really have been wonderful. You know my middle name was Jessie Merle, and I didn't like Jessie. When they write their appointments down, they say (at a high screech) 'Jessie Merle.' Well, I didn't know any Jessie Merle Chappell. The kids would say, 'Momma, they're callin' you.' No, we weren' t really what you'd call a romantic couple. We just grew up together and automatically went into it. He's a better husband than I am a wife. I like to go and mingle with people and play cards and have a good time and he is more or less a home person. He . Iikes to sit. Of course, now, he really doesn't feel like going. But we really have had some good times, ain't no doubt about that. Some of them told us at the party Saturday, 'I'll tell you rig'ht now, ain't nobody around here, had any more good times then ya'll have,' and ain' t that the truth. Phillip Chappell: l've been married for 58 years as of the day efore yesterday. We got married Jan, 30th in 1941. I'm 84 years old, aDd we have four children. Well, I've been knowing her ever since she was a little bitty duck. She was born and raised up he road about two miIes. This was I long time ago now. Must've been hen I was 18, or maybe 17.We're oing back a little bit, you know. I've got a picture in yonder of er taken on a Model-T Ford. She as about this tall then, (holding Us hand out in the air). The picture as taken by her daddy down there In her yard. I thillk, I knew I was in love ound 1937-38. I don't know, I eckon it was sometime in the sum- lIer. That was a long time ago, girl. Lord, I couldn't tell you. Her momma wouldn' t let her go ut so young, so we went to... she had a brother and we went some- 1 where, we came back, and when we got out of the car her and I went to 1 a bat! game over across the swamp over here. Drivin' a Model-T Ford In them days- A 1926 Model-T- We went to the ball game and she got 1 out of the car and left me sittin' in the car, put it that way, (with a hearty laugh). Local people were playing though, you know in those days it was a country ball game not professional. I reckon we dated for about 10 years. I asked her daddy for her. I hink he answered my question. Anyway, she was about 19 or 18 or so. I didn' t get on my knees. Well. I p guess we just set a date to get mar- ried or somethjng like that, we said my birthday. I guess because it was just something to remember. She made me a good wife, hard worker, got along fine together, just a few little spats once in a while. I reckon going on trips was the happiest times, well... the happiest moment was when I got married, but then going on trips after that. We were going to Washington for snowing so we turned around and arne on back to Richmond. I don' t know that we've really lad any sad times. Why what did she say? You can't tell me? Well, 1 on'l know, I've been pretty happy myself. Well, we understood each other, we worked together and we enjoyed it. We knew when we got married it was depression times and e knew we would have to pull together and make a go of it - financially. Well, if you're starting out as a young couple I would tell them, pull together, and love each other and you'll enjoy life. We don't do Valentine's Day or I Chrismas except for our gmndchil- dren, you know. I don't know why we just never have, even since we've been married. I just can't an- swer that. I would have to say that the fun- niest moments that we've shared is our life together. We used to go to lances and stuff like that. We've beenalotofplaces. We enjoy so much being to- gether. Of course, Saturday was our big day too. We had about 130 fam- !ly members and friends at our 58th wedding anniversary. But I reckon that's about all of it. I don't know you're asking mme questlons that... well, it was about 58 years ago, now. I think I've said enough. Merle and Phillip Chappell don't celebrate just one day of love, Valentine's Day, because they have shared something far greater - 58 years together.
