Sam Pete used to cut across the field carrying a lantern going to Hettie Rogers house which was was at Laurel Rd and Rt. 40. She was quite well off and had a large plantation house. Quote: in 1935 when the town of Waverly put in a sewer sytem, she refused to connect as she had no inside bath. Pat O'gery the town supervisor (he stuttered) told her it was the law and he could force her to. She told him "You can make me put one in, but you can't make me use it". She had electric lights and used lanterns.

Sam Pete was quite a drinker...per Kenneth Coker.
