Generation: 1
1. | JOHNSON Adney was born on 7 Nov 1852; died on 1 Mar 1907; was buried in Burrowsville, VA. Other Events and Attributes:
- Name: Adnie
- Reference Number: 1302
Notes:
Notes for ADNIE JOHNSON: Adnie Johnson was the second wife of John Leonardis Home. They had eight children. They were married sometime after 1871.
Susie Horne Laine had tuberculosis and died in Catawba Sanatorium on Valentine Day, February 14, 1934 at 8pm. See the scrapbook for telegram notifying M. A. R. Laine of her death.
Evelyn Ruth Laine saved two letters that were written by Adnie Johnson Horne to Susie Horne. One letter was written on July 13, 1906 and the other was written on August 2, 1906. Adnie Johnson Horne lived in Talpa, Virginia. According to a Virginia map circa 1900, this was in south Prince George County very close to the Dinwiddie and Sussex County lines. At the time she wrote the letters she was a widow. Her husband John L. Horne died the previous year, May 15, 1905. Also at this time Pearl, Susie's sister, was married to Andrew G. Dunn. Pearl was three to four months pregnant with her first child who would be born on January 26, 1907. Susie Horne went to live with Pearl probably because her mother was ailing (Adnie Johnson Horne died on March 1, 1907), her father died the year before, her brother John and sisters Lula and Mattie were at home and could take care of their mother, and Pearl needed help at home. At this writing, the location where Pearl and Andrew lived is unknown but was apparently far enough away from Talpa that frequent visits were difficult. Adnie Johnson Horne's letters spoke of friends Rob and Nellie Temple being ill with Typhoid fever, and spoke of trips to Salum for 'meatings', and a planned trip to Shilo for Lula and Mattie. There are currently two churches in what is now the Templeton District of Prince George County, one is Salem Methodist Church on Templeton Road, and about three and one half miles away, at 18310 Halifax Road, is the Shiloh Baptist Church. It is assumed that Adnie was referring to these Churches as the places for the meetings.
See the scrapbook for the letters and pictures of the churches.
Letters:
It is interesting to note the various cursive style for individual letters, date notation, and lack of punctuation. Spelling apparently was based on phonics. The letters were dated July 13 19 6, and August 2 19 6. There was no comma after the day, and the year was written nineteen six, no zero before the six. Note words: awlways (always), fiew (few), receaved (received), yore (your), thare (there), weak (week), etc.
Two of Susie Horne's cousins were judges. Judge West in Petersburg, and Judge Temple in Prince George County.

The census taken in April of 1930 indicates that the Mathew Laine family lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Mathew Laine's occupation was listed as a sawman in the logging business. Ashton Laine who was 22 years old at that time was living at home and was a bookkeeper for a general store (W. J. Joyner's).
After the Surry Lumber Company failed Mattew Laine (his father) was out of work. Ashton Laine had a job working at Nachman's Department Store on Washington Avenue in Newport News, Virginia. Since Ashton was the only one working the family, including Matthew, Susie, Ashton, Catherine, and Evelyn moved to Newport News, Virginia to a house at 1144 Hampton Avenue. Evelyn enrolled in Walter Reed School into the forth grade. Macgruder school was first to third grades only. Shortly after moving to 1144 Hampton Avenue, they moved to the twelve hundred block to a house with a lower rent. This house was also of a lesser quality, poorly insulated making it rather cold in the winter.
Later Ashton, Matthew and Evelyn moved to rent an upstairs apartment with the Gray's on 22nd Street. Mr. Gray had died and Mrs. Gray rented the apartment. Shortly after this, Evelyn went to live with Pearl Dunn and her family in Emporia, Virginia. Evelyn was supposed to go into the seventh grade high (the grades used to be designated as low and high, i.e., seventh low or seventh high, indicating whether one was in the first or second half). Evelyn was instead place in high school - the eight grade. After about a year she returned to Newport News. Catherine and Charles were married and moved to a house at 222 Cherry Avenue.
Ashton married Louise and moved into the Shipyard apartments. Evelyn move in with them. Matthew moved into the apartment above the Waterfront Lumber Company Office in the twelve hundred block of Jefferson Avenue. Ashton and Louise moved to Durham, North Carolina.
Ashton was born in Homeville, Virginia. Homeville still exists and is located at the intersection of Virginia State Routes 35 and 40. Ashton retired from the U. S. Air Force at Langley Air Force Base in 1956. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Ashton and Louise re-married in the fifties and remained married until her death sometime during the night, Monday, February 26, 1968. Ashton and Louise were residing at 116 North Sixth Street in Hampton, next door to Catherine (Ashton's sister) and Charles Clemens. Ashton was in the Hampton Veteran's Hospital. Catherine received a call from the hospital on Tuesday morning notifying her of Ashton's death and requesting her to notify Ashton's wife of same. Catherine went over to the house, knocked on the doors, called, but got no response. Catherine looked in the bedroom window and saw Louise lying on the floor. She called the police and informed them of the situation. The police came and entered the house and determined that Louise had died. The exact time of death was not determined. She died sometime during the night. It could have been Monday or Tuesday ( the morning Ashton died).
They were buried in the same grave (#6750) at 11am Friday, March 1, 1968 in the Hampton Section (D) of the Hampton National Cemetery.
