  1. 1.  POND Robert Walton, Jr. was born on 28 Jan 1918 in Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, Virginia; died on 1 Jul 2001 in Lewis, Delaware (Beebe Hospital).

    Notes:

    Robert Pond was a General Laborer prior to WWII. He served in Europe as a Squad Leader in Company G, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division during the War and was badly wounded at Kriegsheim, France on 2 December 1944. He was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Sergeant on January 3, 1946. He moved his family to Whitesville, Delaware where on August 21, 1946 he purchased a small farm of 29 1/2 acres from Signe C. Spratt, widow of RFD # 1 Pittsville, Maryland for $1.00 and other valuable and lawful considerations as stated in the Deed. He trained to be a Mechanic with General Motors under the GI Bill and gained employment at the Henlopen Motor Company in Lewis Delaware where he stayed for about 10 years. He made the 30 mile trip twice a day. He left Henlopen and worked for Townson farms for several years and moved the family to a place near Rehobath, Delaware. Later he drove a taxi and a Pyrofax Gas truck in the town of Lewis, Delaware until he had a stroke in the early 1970's. Afterward he lived with his youngest son Richard until medical attention was required at all times. His wounds during the war qualified him for treatment in the VA hospital and Nursing Home in Phil., Pa. where he resided for about five years. His daughter Jeanette reclaimed Robert from the VA nursing home after deciding that her father was not going to die in the place He lost most of his recent memory when he had the stroke around 1972. Robert stated on July 03, 1997 during a family visit that he was assigned to G-Company, 314th Infantry, 79th Division as an Infantry Squad Leader when he was wounded by a German Tiger T-88 Tank in France during WWII. He remembers landing at Marseilles, France and fighting in the Hedge-Rows. He also stated that he took basic training at camp Walters, Texas. His induction record on file at the Court House in Covington, Virginia states that he was inducted on April 25, 1944 at Fort Meade, Maryland, departed the states on October 12, 1944 and returned on December 29, 1945, then was given a Honorable Discharge on January 3, 1946. His area of operations was GO33WD45: Rhineland; Central Europe and he was wounded at Kriegsheim, France on December 2, 1944. His service number is 33-885-620 and VA case number is 08429741. He worked for Henlopen Motor Company in Lewis Delaware for 10-15 years. Robert purchased a small farm of 29 1/2 acres in Whitesville, Delaware and made the 60 mile round trip every day. He left Henlopen Motors after his wife Mary died in 1953 and worked for Townson farms for several years. He sold the farm in Whitesville and moved the family to a place on Airport Road near Rehobath, Delaware. He later bought a home in Lewis, Delaware where he first drove a taxi and then a Pyrofax Gas truck until he had a stroke in the early 1970's. Afterward he lived with his youngest son Richard until he needed medical attention at all times. He received several wounds to the face and had a knee cap blown off during the war which qualified him for treatment at the VA Nursing Home in Phil., Pa. He resided there from 1995-1999 when his daughter Jeanette decided that her father was not going to die in that place and brought him home to stay.
