"During the Revolutonary War George was arrested. He had had a broken leg, and used it as an excuse to keep him out of the Yankee army because he thought the cause was hopless and wanted nothing to do with it. One day while George was working outdoors, a man came to him and said he was a British spy and he needed a place to spend the night. George took him to his house. Not long after, Yankee soldiers came and pronounced George a Tory and arrested him. He was later bailed out and sent home when it was proven that his leg was unfit for military duty.

About 1808 George set off to Ohio after selling most of his property to his son Isaac. He was about 85 years old at the time. It took him two weeks to reach his destination (near Toledo, Ohio).

    Obituary
The following article concerning George LaBar is republished by request:
George LaBar, the aged Monroe connty citizen, was born February 4, 1763, died November 28, 1875 aged 112 years, nine months and twenty-four days, having outlive his father's age by two months and nineteen days, the greatest age attained by a LaBar. He shook hands with George Washington
and was converted at the age of eighty.
About 160 years ago three brothers, Peter, Charles, and Abraham LaBarre, were banished from France for their religious belief, landed in Philadelphia and settled in this region each marrying a German girl. They had many escapades with the Indians, fought in the revolutionary war, etc., and we have many interesting incidents concerning them, but lack the space for present insertion.
In 1808 George (senior) son of Peter and father of the above, moved to Chilicothe, Ohio, where his wife died, and he at the age of ninety-four, married a woman of thirty-two and outlived her; he was 111 years 7 months, and 5 days old when he died. Andrew LaBar died Apr il 9, 1871, aged ninety two years. Catharine Miller died September, 187 0, aged eighty-six years. Isaac LaBar died July 8, 1864 , aged seventy-seven years, nine months and twenty-three days. Susie Weiss died Mary 14, 1 873 aged about eighty years, George LaBar, Born February 4, 1763 died November 28, 1875 aged 112 years, nine months and twenty-four days. John LaBar died aged about seventy five years. Margaret LaBar died aged about seventy-eight years.
The life of George LaBar spanned the forever memorable record in the World's political and scientific history, of the last century. He shook hands with, and looked into the eyes of George Washington.
At the age of about eighty years he was converted during a revival and remained firm in the faith. He was a Baptist, and was immerced in Marshall's Creek. His faith was patriarchal, and his death bed peaceful. He was buried near Spragueville, the Rev. Wm. James (Baptist) preaching his final sermon from Job 5, 26: "Thou shalt come to the grave in a full age like a shock of corn in his season."
He always presided at his own table and his blessing was as follows: Our Father who art in Heaven, we thank Thee for this nourishment provided for our weak and decaying bodies. Keep us from all evil. When done with us in this life, take us to dwell with Thee, for our Lord Jesus Christ 's sake, Amen.. After this, in a lower tone, he said: Lord, bewi th me this day.
His faculties were preserved to a remarkable degree. He never used glasses. He could walk without a cane. He could hear quite distinctly. He was not childish, generally speaking. He would not ride on the cars. He always voted the Democratic ticket. He used tobacco from his youth to the day of his death. He occasionally drank a little stimulant, but not in a single instance to excess.
He was very decisive in his character. He was quite a hunter. He loved solitude, and so he lived contented in his latter days amid frontier surroundings, though within sound of the locomotive. He was not dependent. He was full of "life" to the last and was quick at repartee. Was jovial and a good companion.

    Notes:

The hou se of Peter La Bar was within Fort Hamilton, and his was the only clearing near the fort for a long time. Wherever there was a clearing at this time, soldiers were detailed to keep guard while the men got in their harvest. From 1752 to 1759 the war front was from Bethlehem to Depui's and Fort Hyndshaw, and the settlers along this front had a rough time of it. Many gave up in despair , and left their improvements; their log houses were burnt, and their harvests left unreaped. During this time, petition after petition, numerously signed, was sent in to the Colonial Government for help . Those below the mountain asked, again and again, that the Blue Ridge should be the line of defense, and that all beyond should be left to the Indians. Such petition was never granted. In 1758, James Burd made an examination of the outposts in Northampton County, going up as far as Fort Hyndshaw. He said that south of the mountain was a fine country, but that north of the mountain it was ...

Being called away from him (brother, George E.) a few moments, when I returned I found he was among the missing . Inquiring, for I had pledged myself for his well-being and safe return, I learned he was seen " making tracks" toward the Gap; so I hurried on and soon overtook him , plodding hurriedly along about half a mile down the Gap road. He seemed
much surprised to be overhauled so soon by me. I asked him why he had left me so hastily, and told him I expected him to remain all night with me. He said he thought he had plenty of time to walk down to his sister's, and as he had hea rd she was sick, he would go there, and stop with me when he returned. I told him he had better go back with me, and I
would take him down in a carriage the next day. But he refused, and, as I was
determined to be faithful to my trust, I walked with him. The sister he spoke of is the
youngest of the family, a girl of eighty-six, who lives five miles from the "Water Gap, near the place where he was born. So, on we walked and talked, and I thought no more of
    rock-fish for the present.
We walked on, reaching the sister's about sunset, and there was joy again. She was not sick-she was working jn til e garden! I left the old brother and young sister, promising to come again at an early day, walked a short distance to the station, took the cars, and returned.

This appeared in the Stroudsburg Times newspaper on January 23, 1896 under the heading "Death of a Former Resident" - I know it was in column 3 but I'm not sure if it was the front page or an inside page (I spotted it while browsing microfilm but the printer didn't work)...
"Reuben Weiss died recently at Portland...leaving 28 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren...resided 60 years in Poplar Valley this county (Monroe, Pa.). In 1830 he married Miss Susan Moyer who died in August 1881.

It isn't verbatim as I had to scribble it, but you can probably get a copy from the microfilm at the Monroe County Historical Society, Stroudsburg, Pa.

History of Northampton County (Pennsylvania) and the grand valley of the L ehigh Vol 3 page 347:
Biographical sketch: GEORGE H. WISE: From an early period in the develop ment of the Lehigh Valley, ancestors of George H. Wise, of Bangor, PA ha ve been identified with the development of that section, particularly acti ve in the lumber business. The first representative of the family in Nort hampton county was John Weiss, who moved from Philadelphia, PA, at an ear ly date, the German ancestor, Weiss, now anglicised as Wise, there settli ng upon his first coming. John Weiss owned a small farm between Portla nd and the Delaware Water Gap, the exact location being known as Slatefor d. In addition to cultivating his farm, he engaged in boaring, and rafti ng lumber on the Delaware River. He there lived a quiet, peaceful life, a nd had been greatly respected in his community. He married a Miss LeBa r, of French parentage, and they were the parents of a large family, inclu ding sons: Charles, Reuben, Jesse, David, Micajah, and George H., w ho is the grandfather of George H. Wise.
George H. Weiss, son of John Weiss, was born near Portland, Pennsylva nia, and there educated in the public schools, He early became a lumberma n, and finally engaged in business for himself, conducting for many yea rs a lumber business of large proportions. He made Portland his headquart ers, and there built a large saw mill and converted into lumber the logs c ut in the northern part of the State and in New York, which were raft ed to his mill on the waters of the Delaware. After the plentiful supp ly of timber began to diminish, Mr. Wise engaged in the lime business, est ablishing kilns at Portland, and becoming a large dealer. He prosper ed in both enterprises, and was one ofthe influential and substantial m en of his town. He took active part in public affairs, and for a term w as burgess of Portland. He married Susan Yetter, and they were the paren ts of a large family, including sons: Joseph H., of Portland, PA; Lewis R euben, also of Portland, PA; Hiram, a real estate dealer in Easton; Fra nk S., ; Clark C., of Bangor; also daughters: Rosanna, Alice, and Hanna h; these children all marrying.
Frank S. Wise, son of George H. and Susan (Yetter) Wise, was bo rn in Portland. February 3, 1862, and there attended the public school s. When school years were over he at once became associated with his fath er in the lumber business, beginning in the saw mill at Portland. He rema ined in Portland with his father until 1884, then moved to Bangor, whe re he soon afterward in connection with his brother Clark and Joseph form ed a parthership and invested in a 3,000 acre tract of timberland locat ed in Clearfield Co PA; a devestating forest fire swept their tract causi ng a severe loss to the brothers which they estimated at $40,000. Previou sly in 1884 three of these brothers Reuben, Joseph and Hiram had open ed a lumber yard in Bangor PA under the firm name Wise Brothers. That bus iness in 1886 had been acquired by Clark C Wise who conducted it alone un til 1890 adding to the lumber yard a planing mill After the fire which p ut him temporarily out of business, Frank S. Wise joined his brother Cla rk C in Bangor and 1891 was admitted to a partnership in the business bo th lumber yard and planing mill. They jointly conducted the business in B angor until 1901 when Frank S. purchased his brothers interest and beca me sole owner. The planing mill had been destroyed by fire the previous y ear causing a severe loss and in 1902 Mr. Wise replaced this loss with a m odern planing mill equipped with the newest and best working machiner y. He still continues a successful lumber and planing business and in add ition to the Bangor Plant has lumber interests in Tioga Co PA. and in We st Virginia. His entire life from boyhood has been given to the lumber bu siness and while he has perhaps met with more than his due share of misfor tune from the fire (friend) not only calm cool judgement was necessary b ut courage and fortitude of the highest order were required in such tim es of financial stress and storm. His trials of his metal but developed t hat strong reliant businessman and he won substantial success. Frank S. W ise married in 1881 Clara A. Levi Drake
He is one of the leading business men of Stroudsburg Monroe County, a nd no work which aims to present an account of the chief actors in the var ious activities of that thriving little city would be complete without men tion of his name.
The Drake family originated in England, but as no definite records are kno wn to exist the information concerning early generations depends upon trad ition only. Levi Drake, the grandfather of our subject was born probab ly in the United States, and for many years he was a farmer in Smithfie ld Township, Northampton (now Monroe) County. He married Elenor Van Cam p, and left a family of eleven children. Of the seven sons, Daniel di ed at the age of eighty- seven; Joseph W., at age eighty-three; Wayn e, at sixty-five; John, at sixty-six; Silas, at the age of seventy-six; Jo hn, at sixty-six; Alfred, at eighty-three; and James is now 1899 age seven ty-eight years. There were four daughters: Mary, Mrs. John Lazerds; Sara h, Mrs. Melchoir Dreher; Jane, Mrs. Ephraim Lockard; and Hannah, who marri ed and died in early womanhood.
Joseph W. Drake, the father of our subject, was born August 24 1794 in wh at is now Smithfield township Monroe County, and grew to manhood amid t he surroundings of pioneer life, His meager education was acquired main ly by private study, bur his innate ability was seen in his successful bus iness career, in which he accumulated a handsome competence. In his you th he learned the millwright’s trade, which he followed for fifteen year s, and later he became interested in farming in Stroud Township, Monroe Co unty, where his death occurred in March 1877. He was an excellent citize n, and was active in religious work as a member of the Baptist Church, Phy sically he was hardy and robust, weighing about 160 pounds, and he and h is wife, who was medium size, were both blondes. He was married in 182 4, to Mary Labar, generally known as Polly, who was born August 6, 180 6, in Northampton County, and died January 24, 1886. They had three childr en: Amos, born July 17 1828, who died at the age of fifty-seven; Levi, o ur subject; Louis, who resides in Stroud Township, on the old homestead.
Levi Drake was born October 14, 1833, in Stroud Township, Monroe County, a nd was educated in the country schools of the day. His opportunities we re limited, but he made most of them, and by his own ingenuity and indust ry developed a keen and accurate insight into business methods. For a numb er of years he was engaged in farming and general business operations, b ut in 1885, he retired and took up his residence in Stroudsburg, owning, b esides his home there, a fine farm. His time in now occupied chiefly wi th the management of his investments and loaning of money, and while his m anner is quiet and unostentatious, any good judge of character will recogn ize in him the qualities of the typical financier; he has been a direct or in the Stroudsburg National Bank for ten years. In politics he is a Rep ublican, and he and his family are identified with the Presbyterian Churc h, of which he is a leading member. During the Civil war Mr. Drake was dra fted, but being unable to leave his business he sent a substitute.
On September 10, 1859, Mr. Drake married Catherine Weiss, a native of Smit hfield, Monroe County, whose valuable counsel and assistance were potent f actors in his success, as he proudly acknowledges she assisted him Nob ly in accumulating the competence which he now enjoys. Mrs. Drake passed a way December 2, 1898, deeply mourned by her many friends. She too was a me mber of and active worker in the Presbyterian Church. Their only son, Stew art, born August 6, 1860, is a farmer in Stroud Township, Monroe Count y. He married Alice Swartwood, daughter of Philip Swartwood, of the same t ownship, and they have two children; Jennie C. and Garfield.
The former, who now resides with her grandfather, has received an excelle nt education in the public schools and the State Normal School at Stroudsb urg.
The Weiss family is of French origin, and Mrs. Drake’s paternal grandfathe r, John Weiss, came from France to settle in Northampton County. Her fath er the late Reuben Weiss was born in 1807, at Bethel, and died in 189 6. He married Susan Myers, daughter of John Myers, a mason by trade who di ed in Monroe County, and ten children born to the union: Mary, who marri ed (1st) Robert Demont, and (2nd) Frank Bush, of Newark NJ.; Catherine, Mr s. Drake; John, resident of Northampton County; William, who resides in Po rtland, Northampton County; Louisa, who died at the age of eleven; Enos, w ho died in childhood; Elizabeth, wife of S. Purdy; Jacob, a resident of Ph iladelphia; Louis, who resides in Scranton; and Ida, wife of H. Edinger.
