Gene.....this is the sampler Ann Tottington Rudd (William's sister) made and is quite famous.....it was the key to my finding William and his family.....in books, magazines...and even on this site from the library....it has always said Ann "Torrington" Rudd......

    George Washington was born
    february 22 A.D. 1732. appointed General of
    the American Armies A.D. 1775. Resigned A.D.
1783. Elected President of the United States
    A.D. 1789. Resigned A.D. 1796. appointed
    General of the American Armies
    A.D. 1798 and died universally
    lamented december 14th A.D. 1799
Ann Tottington Rudd in the 13th year of her age
Alexandria A.D. 1817 May I govern my passions with
absolute sway and grow wiser and better as life wears away

You can plainly see that she stitched Tottington......

I noticed your ancestry profile said you live in virginia.....is there any chance you could get them to make this correction...??

Like maybe take your shoe off and pound it on the table......didn't anybody ever notice it said Tottington...!!!

I'm going to try and put this on "Crane - Grady" genealogy.....I'll let you know when I get it finished....

The following story is about William Tottington Rudd's sister:

13 year old, Ann Tottington Rudd, daughter of an Alexandria, DC, shopkeeper, recalled George Washington's career on her 1817 sampler. Her sampler is noted in several books and magazines regarding early needlework, however, her name was listed as Ann "Torrington" Rudd even though you can clearly see that she had stitched "Tottington". Her sampler is shown at The Lyceum - Alexandria's History Museum with the following wording:

    George Washington was born

    february 22 A.D. 1732. appointed General of

    the American Armies A.D. 1775. Resigned A.D.

1783. Elected President of the United States

    A.D. 1789. Resigned A.D. 1796. appointed

    General of the American Armies

    A.D. 1798 and died universally

    lamented december 14th A.D. 1799

Ann Tottington Rudd in the 13th year of her age

Alexandria A.D. 1817 May I govern my passions with

absolute sway and grow wiser and better as life wears away
